Lamond Campbell hat einen Harmonograph mit einem modularen Synthesizer gekoppelt und dafür gesorgt, dass die Schwingbewegungen der Zeichenmaschine zu Musik werden. Dann hat er damit ein Album produziert – und das ist auf nerdige Weise ganz schön gut.
I built an 18th century harmonograph and connected it to a 21st century modular synthesiser.
A harmonograph is an old scientific device that uses pendulums to create illustrations of harmonic motion, called lissajous figures. On this harmonograph each pendulum is connected to a sensor which triggers different elements of the synthesiser so that every time it makes a drawing, it also plays an accompanying synth soundtrack. There’s also a contact mic on the drawing board to pick up the sound of the pen.It uses three pendulums – two connected in a linear way to the pen and one rotary pendulum connected to the drawing board. You set them all swinging, lower the biro pen to the drawing board and let the pendulums run down over a period of about 5 minutes, after which both the unique drawing and soundtrack are complete.

For the longest time it has been the dream of the Leonardo da Vinci Robot Society to bring one of the Renaissance master’s creations back to life for the world to enjoy. Da Vinci’s most famous robot, the mechanical knight built over 500 years ago, was able to perform several tasks and was even rumored to be able to draw. When we met mechanical paper engineer extraordinaire Robert Sabuda, also a huge da Vinci fan, it was a match made in heaven! Through careful research of da vinci’s original drawings and plans in the Codex Atlanticus, da Vinci’s notebook dealing with robotics, Sabuda and his team have finally unraveled the mechanics and brought the machine into the 21st century!

I finally did a test of the sand drawing robot, it worked beautifully. First time. At last ya’ll had an opportunity of seeing what this project was all about and I hope you like it.

Hübsche kleine optische Illusion, die uns glauben macht, dass dieser von James Nolan Gandy genutzte Zeichenroboter schneller zeichnet, als er sich tatsächlich zu bewegen scheint. Und überhaupt: dieser Zeichenroboter wirkt ganz wunderbar hypnotisch.

Ich bin gerade ein bisschen dolle geflasht von dieser Maschine, die auf dem Papier nichts nicht zu können scheint und schreibt und malt und zeichnet und alles. Und alles in sehr filigran, sehr schön.
