Die Library of Congress stellt ein Open-Source-Archiv mit Hip-Hop-Samples aus mehr als einem Jahrhundert online

Die us-amerikanischen Library of Congress hat mit Citizen DJ ein Online-Archiv ins Netz gebracht, das tausende Hip-Hop-Samples für jederman freizugänglich macht und zum Remixen anregen soll. Neben der Archiv-Form sind Downloads möglich und man hat sogar einen Sequenzer in die Browser implementiert. Ich lade dann mal und schmeiß Ableton an.

Cultivate the creation of new and transformative music using free-to-use audio and video materials from the Library.
Connect the general public with culturally significant, underutilized, and free-to-use audio and video collections available from the Library.
Engage communities, such as secondary school students and amateur musicians, that may have a strong relationship with hip hop music, but little to no existing relationship with the Library or the Library’s materials.
Provide the general public (in particular, those with little to no formal research training) with the tools and resources to navigate the United States copyright system in the context of sample-based music creation.
Contribute to human-computer interaction research and best practices for search and discovery of large audio and video collections.

The Sound of Berlin

Mein „Sound of Berlin“ klingt ganz anders, aber man darf die Sampling-Arbeit und die filmische Umsetzung hiervon natürlich dennoch anerkennen. Die Leute von Bonamaze haben in sechs Tagen 850 Samples in Berlin aufgenommen und damit dieses kurze Video vertont, dass ebenso Aufnahmen aus Berlin zeigt.

Akai bringt mit der MPC One eine Sampling-Groovebox für den Rucksack

Akai haut einen raus und packt sein altbewährtes MPC-Prinzip nebst aktueller Anpassungen in eine Box, die in jeden Rucksack und/oder Jutebeutel passt: die MPC One. Ich bleib da ja eher bei den mir älteren und vertrauten Methoden, finde aber dennoch äußerst spannend, was da heute so möglich ist. Würde also schon dran rumspielen wollen. Ab Februar für 749,- Euro erhältlich.

Sampling like damals

Ich hab‘ Sampling damals noch auf einem E-Mu Emax 1, einem Akai S1000 und einem E-Mu Esi 32 gelernt. Für heutige Verhältnisse war das alles unfassbar kompliziert und damals noch echte Handarbeit. Ich weine dem nicht hinterher und bin froh, dass ich ähnliche Loops heute einfach so mit der Mouse zusammenschieben kann. Mag es aber trotzdem immer noch, Leuten dabei zuzusehen, die es halt immer noch so machen wie früher. Mit nem 1210er, ’ner ollen MPC und halt der Geduld dafür.

So wie MAARTN, der sich für diesen Beat einfach mal einen Sonntag lang Zeit genommen hat. Wie damals. Sampling – so schön.

Jimmy Edgar und Machinedrum machen für Boiler Room Musik aus Samples, die ihnen zugeschickt wurden

Geiles Konzept, das trotz der Länge des Videos überraschend kurzweilig umgesetzt wird. Fans schicken für die illustre Runde Samples an den Boiler Room, die dort dann von Produzenten als Beats präsentiert werden. Hier von J-E-T-S aka Jimmy Edgar und Machinedrum, die damit wohl auch nochmal auf ihr gemeinsames Album aus dem Mai hinweisen wollen. Finde gut.
