Ich war damals schon voll in diesem Berliner Techno-Zirkus unterwegs und dann gab es dort in Prenzlberg, in einem komplett kaputten Altbau, eine Wohnungstür mit genau diesem Aufkleber. Never forget. Und das gehört für mich irgendwie alles zusammen.

Wie sah der Prenzlauer Berg unmittelbar nach der deutschen Wiedervereinigung aus? Diese Ausschnitte aus einer Reportage von 1991 zeigen einen Stadtteil im Umbruch: verfallene Altbauten, marode Hinterhöfe, leerstehende Wohnungen und eine Bevölkerung zwischen Hoffnung und Sorge.

Über 145.000 Menschen leben damals im dicht besiedelten Bezirk Prenzlauer Berg. Tausende Wohnungen gelten als dringend sanierungsbedürftig. Während Politik und Wirtschaft über die Zukunft des Viertels diskutieren, fürchten viele Bewohner*innen steigende Mieten und die Verdrängung aus ihrem Kiez.

This recording comes from a rare night in Moscow, at A-Club — January 1999. It survived almost by accident.

As Anton Kubikov once told me, when Herbert realized the set was being recorded, he wasn’t happy. He started pushing the low end, overloading the bass, trying to disrupt the tape. Anton, at the sound desk, carefully pulled it back. A quiet duel — artist vs tape recorder.

What remains is more than a DJ set — it’s a raw fragment of a moment when a new sound was emerging, long before the idea of digital permanence.

From its origins as a joke preset on the Roland Alpha Juno, all the way to 90s rave music domination and its lasting legacy on electronic music. Along the way we’ll talk about its creator Eric Persing, the various ways it can be recreated and we’ll look at a few different tracks it has been used on.

In diesem Fernsehbeitrag aus dem Jahr 1995 wird eine Zusammenfassung der Liveübertragung der 7. Love Parade auf dem Kurfürstendamm in Berlin gezeigt. Die Sendung, moderiert von Anne Will, gibt einen Einblick in die damalige Atmosphäre und vermittelt einen Eindruck vom großen Ausmaß der Veranstaltung.

Tearooms in post-revolution Czechoslovakia symbolised places through which new spiritualities were flowing, and the influx of largely uncharted ways of life closely intertwined with new age, ambient, folk and minimalism. With their minds altered thanks to smuggled records by Fripp & Eno or Steve Reich, this loose network of musicians had begun composing meditative music, using loops and handmade instruments, with a different sensibility.

Music journalist Pavel Klusák dubbed this 1990s scene a “tearoom alternative”. Experimental folk singer Oldřich Janota, Jaroslav Kořán’s various ensembles like Modrá or Orloj Snivců (The Horologe of Dreamers) or Irena and Vojtěch Havlovi were drawn by the light and composed music that didn’t match the fast pace of newly imported capitalism.

31. Oktober 1991, Paramount Theatre von Seattle: Rockband Nirvana spielt ein Konzert, das sie an die Spitze katapultiert. Wenige Wochen nach der Veröffentlichung ihres Albums Nevermind, welches eine neue Ära in der internationalen Rockmusikszene einläutete, lieferten Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic und Dave Grohl eine raue, intensive und unglaublich authentische Performance ab.

Die drei Musiker auf der Bühne scheint eine unkontrollierbare Energie anzutreiben. Kurt Cobain, der schon damals in anderen Sphären unterwegs war, schreit seine Texte mit entwaffnender Wut heraus. Dave Grohl hämmert auf sein Schlagzeug, als ginge es um sein Leben, und Krist Novoselic trägt das Ganze mit seiner tiefen, hypnotischen Bassline. Gleich zu Beginn gibt Nirvana mit dem Coversong „Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for a Sunbeam“ der schottischen Alternative-Band The Vaselines, den Ton an: Es wird wild! Die Spannung steigt weiter und gipfelt in die Generationshymne „Smells Like Teen Spirit“, die das Publikum frenetisch mitschreit.

Kate Bellingham reports that an exciting new interconnected world – a world where every word ever written, every picture ever painted and ever film ever shot will be at our fingertips – is tantalisingly close. The information superhighway will be a high-capacity digital communication network, which in time could revolutionise the way we shop, socialise and work.

The groundwork for this technological behemoth is already well underway, with computers already communicating with one another to allow users to send electronic mail (President Bill Clinton is already connected) and access news, weather and even some shopping services. For the information superhighway to really take off though, it needs more capacity than the UK’s ageing network of copper telephone wires can provide. Is Britain prepared to invest in the sort of high-capacity fibre-optic cable network that can make the technological utopia a reality?
