Im selben Flieger ging durch den Sog ein iPhone verloren und machte sich auf den Weg zur Erde, wo es später nahezu unbeschadet von diesem Gentleman in einem Gebüsch gefunden wurde. Und: es war wohl nicht das einzige.

Für manche vielleicht egal, für mich ein kleines Aufatmen, weil ich eben keine fünf bis 18 verschiedene Kabel oder mindestens drei Adapter mitschleppen muss, um auf alle frisch zu ladenden Eventualitäten vorbereitet zu sein: Das EU-Parlament hat heute entschieden, dass in Europa zukünftig per USB nur noch über einen Standard geladen werden soll: USB-C. Das hat ja auch was gedauert, aber lieber spät als nie.

Kaum sind 13 Jahre vorbei, schon beschließt das EU-Parlament die Regelung zum einheitlichen Ladestandard für Handys, Tablets und andere elektronische Geräte. Fast hätte sich das Problem in der Zwischenzeit erledigt – wäre da nicht Apple.

Michael Steeber hat mit The Apple Store Time Machine eine interaktive macOS-App entwickelt, mit der vier Apple Stores von einst samt jeglicher Details virtuell erkundet werden können. Er schreibt: „Every detail has been accounted for, down to the last iPod and box of software. Grab your Mac and download it for free.“

The app works a bit like a first-person shooter video game, only without the shooting part. But if you’re familiar with any first person video game, the controls for moving around the environment will be familiar. Mouse/trackpad to look around, WASD or arrow keys for moving, Shift to run, C to crouch, and E to interact with items. There’s no actual game component though. Instead this acts as a lovingly replicated historic recreation of these Apple Stores: Tysons Corner (the first ever Apple Store), Stanford Shopping Center (one of Apple’s old mini stores), Fifth Avenue (the iconic underground store with a glass cube atop it in New York City), and Infinite Loop (the Apple Store located at Apple’s former main campus at 1 Infinite Loop in California).

Hugh Jeffreys kaufte sich neulich ein ähnlich altes schon ziemlich schrottiges MacBook Pro für 100 US-Dollar. Ein Scharnier war gebrochen, das Gehäuse war verbogen, verbeult und zerkratzt, zwei der unteren Füße waren abgefallen, wodurch sich das Innere mit Schmutz füllte.

Dann besorgte er ein wenig Beizeug und machte die Kiste wieder lauffähig – und das optisch auch noch ein wenig individualisiert. Nicht wenig aber Arbeit, technisch nicht ganz anspruchslos, aber warum auch immer alles gleich entsorgen, wenn es denn noch läuft?

Ich lachte.

Den Bums solle man dann bei 170°C für sieben Minuten backen, was eigentlich dafür sorgen soll, dass sich eventuell gelöste Lötverbindungen wieder zusammenfinden. Rein theoretisch zumindest. Er hat seine damit gemachten Erfahrungen hier mal niedergeschrieben. Spoiler: in seinem Fall hat das nicht ganz so gut funktioniert. Kann am Herd gelegen haben. Danke jedenfalls dafür, dass das mal wer getestet hat.

The internet has happy tales of other owners reviving their dead MacBooks by gently baking them in the oven. I figured, if it’s good enough for those four people on the internet – it’s good enough for me. The idea is to heat the logic board just enough to reflow solder any broken connections.

Only the logic board should go in the oven, so the first stage is to remove all components and connections from the board. Despite the MacBook Air’s tiny form factor, this was surprisingly simple, although it does require use of a pentalobe and Torx driver bit. The I/O board was also removed from the chassis, as my suspicion was that the offending component would likely by located on that board – plus it would give the logic board a companion during the bake-off.

With confidence high and the bake nearly finished, for the final 60 seconds I thought I’d go off-piste and crank up the temperature to 180 °C – I wanted to make sure things were cooked through. Curiously peering through the oven window, all hell broke loose within 30 seconds: The room filled with sounds of popcorn being made as resistors and components desoldered themselves from the logic board and dropped onto the oven floor. The previously clear air was replaced with an acrid haze. Then the bake reached it’s finale as the logic board bowed up in the middle, accompanied by the screeching sound of the CPU being wrenched off its socket. I lunged for the power switch and yanked open the oven door, hoping to limit damage. Then, as quickly as the bowing started, everything calmed down and the board returned to its original shape. With the board still hot, a wooden spoon was employed to desperately poke the CPU back onto its mount – with little success.

Das Video in der Summe ist ziemlich nervend youtuberisch, ja. Die Aufmerksamkeit, aber, gilt einem 2000er iBook, das hier erstmalig ausgepackt und an den Strom angeschlossen wird. Mac OS 9 – und das Dingen läuft erstmal. Sah schon bisschen sexy aus für damalige Verhältnisse. Mit Griff!

Das ist Daisy. Daisy ist ein von Apple entwickelter Computer, der ausgemusterte iPhones zerlegt, um die verbauten wertvollen Materialien wieder verwerten zu können. Daisy schafft es, in einer Stunden 200 Telefone fein säuberlich zu zerlegen. Welcher Bot später dafür verantwortlich sein wird, Daisy aus den selben Gründen zu zerlegen, ist bisher nicht ganz klar.

Apple’s newest disassembly robot, Daisy, is the most efficient way to reclaim more of the valuable materials stored in iPhone. Created through years of R&D, Daisy incorporates revolutionary technology based on Apple’s learnings from Liam, its first disassembly robot launched in 2016. Daisy is made from some of Liam’s parts and is capable of disassembling nine versions of iPhone and sorting their high-quality components for recycling. Daisy can take apart up to 200 iPhone devices per hour, removing and sorting components, so that Apple can recover materials that traditional recyclers can’t — and at a higher quality.

Vielleicht hat man hier „Never change a running System“ verdammt ernst genommen. Ich verstehe das und gucke gerade mal, wie lange meine Mac-Updates schon wieder mal überfällig sind. Denn das sind sie immer so lange, bis ohne sie nichts mehr geht.
