Fans begannen Anfang dieser Woche, Fotos der Poster im Reddit-Thread „Boards of Canada“ zu teilen, bevor Warp Records, das langjährige Label der beiden, die Spekulationen bestätigte, indem es gestern ohne jeglichen Kontext ebenfalls Fotos der Poster teilte.

Auf jedem der Poster befindet sich in der unteren Ecke ein sechseckiges Logo. Das gleiche, das auf mysteriösen VHS-Kassetten zu sehen war, die letzte Woche über den Vertriebsdienst von Bleep an regelmäßige Käufer von Warp-Veröffentlichungen verschickt wurden.

Ein Fan bemerkte, dass die verzerrte Musik des Tapes eine Stimme „rückwärts“ gespielte Version von „Little Star“ von The Elegants sei, das das schwer fassbare schottische Duo in ihrem „Societas X Tape“ verwendete, einem zweistündigen Mixtape, das 2019 auf NTS Radio ausgestrahlt wurde.

Offiziell ist das alles noch nicht, aber es würde mich wundern, wenn dann jetzt bald ein neues Album kommen wird. Es würde auf „Tomorrow’s Harvest“ im Jahr 2013 folgen, das ebenfalls mit einer kryptischen Vorabkampagne angekündigt wurde. Wenn das mal kein Grund zur Vorfreude ist.

Es sieht so aus, als ob Boards Of Canada etwas im Schilde führen. Vor zwei Tagen posteten Fans auf Reddit, dass sie mysteriöse VHS-Kassetten mit dem sechseckigen Logo von Boards Of Canada per Post erhalten hätten. Die Kassette ist offiziell auf Discogs aufgetaucht – wohl von BOCs langjährigem Label Warp – und die Audioaufnahme wurde natürlich bereits gerippt und online hochgeladen.

Laut den selbst erstellten Audio-Rips enthält das VHS-Band keine Musik – nur etwa eine Minute verrauschtes, abgehacktes Monolog-Geräusch. Das dazugehörige Video ist ebenso vage und unverständlich.

Es ist zwar kein expliziter Teaser für ein neues Album, aber falls doch, wäre es das erste neue Album von Boards Of Canada seit über zehn Jahren und da wäre es ja wirklich mal wieder an der Zeit.

On April 20, 2013, a mysterious Boards of Canada vinyl was found in a NYC record store, containing the first of six cryptic transmissions that formed part of a 36-digit code.

This discovery turned out to be the launch of an alternate reality game (ARG) meticulously designed to promote Boards of Canada’s new album, Tomorrow’s Harvest.

The game included, among many other things, a global scavenger hunt for hidden albums, further transmissions across multimedia (BBC Radio 1, NPR, YouTube, Adult Swim), online codebreaking, and a listening party at an abandoned waterpark in the Mojave Desert.

The Guardian praised the album’s viral marketing campaign as „ingenious“ and a testament to the fanbase’s dedication.

Sonntag. Bester Zeitpunkt für eine Reise mit Boards of Canada. Unamusedpirate hat ihnen diesen 80-minütigen Film gewidmet und mit ihrem unvergleichbaren Sound unterlegt. Klasse Arbeit, finde ich.

I seem to have inadvertently made an almost feature length video on the Scottish Electronic band „Boards of Canada“. There are very few things I am passionate about to the level that I am about this musical duo. I’ve always wanted to make a long video outlining their discography and style, and now I’ve done it. The amount of time I’ve spent checking every word and cut in this thing is now beyond my comprehension, so if any mistakes remain I can only say I apologize. Factual inaccuracies are also something I’ve relentlessly checked and monitored, I can honestly say if any remain I had zero idea they weren’t accurate. I’m not in any way a professional in any field related to the making of this video, it was mainly an experiment for myself, to see if I could do it, and I feel proud of it at this point.

This video was started in 2017 and initially finished and rendered around November/December 2019, so anything new from Boards of Canada after that point, isn’t accounted for in this video. It took me a while to actually decide to upload it. That should explain why some „as of“ phrases are out of date or inconsistent.

This video features no audio that isn’t in some way related to Boards of Canada; no voice over, no adverts. It is not monetized in any way and I will not make any money at all from this video, nor do I intend to. Everything related to Boards of Canada is owned by Warp Records, Skam Music, or Music70.

Am Wochenende haben sich NTS Radio und Warp Records zusammengetan, um uns mit WXAXRXP eine dreitägige Feier anlässlich der drei Jahrzehnte des legendären Labels zu bringen. Mit dabei waren so ziemlich alle, die Warp zu dem gemacht haben, was Warp heute halt ist. Unter anderem, und darüber habe ich mich so ziemlich am meisten gefreut, Boards of Canada. Die haben schon seit Jahren keine neuen Mixe mehr veröffentlicht. Umso schöner, dass die gleich mal zwei Stunden da gelassen haben – und dabei offensichtlich auch bisher unveröffentlichtes BoC-Material gespielt haben.

Boards Of Canadas „—— / —— / —— / XXXXXX / —— / ——“ Release ging vor drei Jahren mal für den damaligen Record Store Day im Netz steil. Angeblich gab es damals aus der Hüfte und ungemastert davon nur drei Pressungen. Eine davon ging 2013 auf eBay für nicht weniger als $5,700 an einen neuen Besitzer. Jetzt tauchte eine dieser drei Platten auf Discogs auf: für $4,500.

So geht Legenden bildendes Marketing.

NYC’s record shop Other Music has listed a mint copy of Boards Of Canada’s —— / —— / —— / XXXXXX / —— / —— for $4,500.

The 12″ single, which bears an incomplete code and an enigmatic recording, was secretly released as part of Record Store Day 2013. It initiated a cryptic marketing campaign around the Scottish duo’s fourth studio album Tomorrow’s Harvest.

A fan discovered the first known copy of the record at Other Music before selling it on eBay for $5,700. A second copy was also found at London’s Rough Trade East.

The third copy is now up for grabs via Discogs.

So. Dann haben wir es endlich.

Nachdem nun schon seit gut drei Jahren auf ein neues Album von BoC spekuliert wurde, die 20 Sekunden-Rille zum Record Store Day in einige Läden kam (kostet mittlerweile 5000 Dollar), ein kryptisches Video mit Hinweisen darauf auf YouTube auftauche, Soundcloud ominöse Streams hergab und dann heute noch eine eigens dafür laufende Website entdeckt wurde, die sich nur über einen Zugangscode öffnen lässt, den wiederum etliche Leute zu generieren versuchten, ist es genau jetzt offiziell: Das neue Boards of Canada Album kommt am 10.06.2013 auf Warp und wird „Tomorrow’s Harvest“ heißen. ENDLICH! Auf Bleep kann das Dingen schon jetzt vorbestellt werden, und Bleep ging dann auch gleich mal in die Knie.

Ich kann gar nicht sagen, wie sehr ich mich darauf freue und wie sehr mir diese wirklich kompliziert gestrickte Promo-Kiste im Vorfeld gefallen hat. Und Daft Punk kann gehen.

Aber: hier war alles dabei, hier hat man sich das gesamte Netz als Promo-Maschine gewählt, ohne den Leuten permanent mit unwichtigen Dingen auf den Saque zu gehen, was ja im Vorfeld des neuen Daft Punks Album gemacht wurde. Soundcloud, YouTube, reddit, eine Platte zum Record Store Day und die Multiplikatoren wie FACT und RA. Alles richtig gemacht, wenn denn nun auch die Platte ein dickes Ding wird. Aber darum mache ich mir eigentlich nicht sonderlich viele Sorgen. So freuen wir uns auf die Tracks, die damit dann kommen werden. Ein Sommer für BoC, ein Sommer mit Tomorrow’s Harvest. Ay!

Am Samstag war Record Store Day und in einigen Geschäften tauchte zu diesem diese ominöse Platte mit dem Namen „—— / —— / —— / XXXXXX / —— / —–„. Die Urheberschaft wird keinen geringeren als
Boards of Canada zugeschrieben und das ist selbstredend einen kleine Bombe, die da platzt. Jetzt wird natürlich auf allen Kanälen wie verrückt rum spekuliert. Wann denn nun das neue Album kommen wird, weil das ob ganz offenbar keine Frage mehr zu sein scheint. Ick freu ma!

As part of Saturday’s Record Store Day festivities, Warp released a solitary 12″ credited to the pair through NY record shop Other Music. The disc features a short clip of a woozy none-more-BoC piece, plus a vocodered voice reading out the numbers “9-3-6-5-5-7″. It appears the record may be one in a series of jigsaw pieces: the record is credited as „—— / —— / —— / XXXXXX / —— / —–“ , and features dead space on either side of the clip, implying a fill-in-the-gaps approach.

We obviously approached the story with the requisite skepticism, but Pitchfork now claim they have had direct confirmation that the record is legit. An Other Music employee, Mikey IQ Jones, has also got in touch directly with FACT. According to Jones: „It’s real. We were given a copy to secretly place in the racks at Other Music; we’re really psyched that it was found by a big fan!”

As expected, there’s been a whirlwind of fact-scavenging and speculation on the web in the days following the record’s release. Dedicated BoC fanboys 2020k have been thoroughly documenting information about the 12″ as its emerged, and point towards a recorded phone conversation with Other Music, who confirm that the disc is the only US copy and that five others have been released in different countries. BoC, it should be noted, have some prior in this department. After practically zero promotion, 2002′s Geogaddi was premiered at listening parties in six churches across the world. The sessions took place in London, New York, Tokyo, Edinburgh, Berlin and Paris. The site also confirms that a Warp employee also delivered the album by hand to the store at 3pm on the day before Record Store Day, and that BoC have an official listing on the Record Store Day page.

There have also been some hijinks going on the BoC Youtube channel. A video to Geogaddi track ‘Julie And Candy’ was uploaded onto the band’s official YouTube channel, originally with „—— / —— / —— / —— / —— / —–“ in the subject line. Although this was subsequently removed, the title was also embedded into the clip at 4:20. 2020k note that, the following day, the message had moved to 4:19, suggesting there might be some sort of countdown in progress (although the clip has yet to move this morning).

Das Video zumindest, das 2020k als Snippet von der Platte hochlud jedenfalls klingt definitiv nach BoC. Und mir sind derartige Mysterien ja viel lieber als das Promo-Maschinengewehr, das Columbia bezüglich des neuen Daft Punk Albums abfeuert.
