Atlas is autonomously moving engine covers between supplier containers and a mobile sequencing dolly. The robot receives as input a list of bin locations to move parts between.

Atlas uses a machine learning (ML) vision model to detect and localize the environment fixtures and individual bins [0:36]. The robot uses a specialized grasping policy and continuously estimates the state of manipulated objects to achieve the task.

There are no prescribed or teleoperated movements; all motions are generated autonomously online. The robot is able to detect and react to changes in the environment (e.g., moving fixtures) and action failures (e.g., failure to insert the cover, tripping, environment collisions [1:24]) using a combination of vision, force, and proprioceptive sensors.

Die Deutsche Bahn hat im Kampf gegen Graffitis auf Zügen in München einen Roboterhund im Einsatz. Der „Spot“ von Boston Dynamics soll vorläufig erstmal im Testbetrieb Sprayer davon abhalten, Züge zu bemalen.

Er ist rund 40 Kilogramm schwer, kann bis zu 7 km/h schnell laufen und hat drei Kameras an verschiedenen Stellen seines Körpers: Der Roboterhund „Spot“ soll die Deutsche Bahn und die S-Bahn München künftig dabei unterstützen, Graffitisprayer aufzuspüren, bevor sie Bahnwaggons bemalen.

Allerdings ist auch der Roboterhund keine billige Angelegenheit: Für die vierwöchige Testphase beliefen sich die Kosten auf einen „mittleren fünfstelligen Betrag“, so eine Sprecherin der Deutschen Bahn. Die Graffitis einfach auf den Waggons zu lassen, lehnt S-Bahn Chef Büttner ab: Sauberkeit gehöre zu den Grundwerten der S-Bahn München: „Ehrlicherweise finde ich Graffiti-Künstler im Bereich der Urban Street Art durchaus sehenswert und besuche auch gerne solche Museen“, so Büttner, „aber an unseren Zügen ist es am Ende Sachbeschädigung“.

Immer wenn wieder neue Videos von Boston Dynamics auftauchen, bin ich hier gleichsam beeindruckt wie auch beängstigt. Das sieht immer alles so perfekt aus. Ist es aber gar nicht, wie man im Hause von Boston Dynamics in diesem Behind the scenes Video anmerkt. Bis die Dinger das können, braucht es einen Prozess, der ähnlich dem beim Skaten oder Trial fahren ist. Während dieses Prozesses machen die Roboter halt auch Fehler – und das ist ziemlich bis sehr amüsant.

The steps are so perfectly timed, and the motions so smooth and harmonious, that you might think the robots are actually listening and responding to the music. But they’re not; they’re listening to their synchronized inner clocks. For all their sophisticated sensors, the robots don’t even know that music is playing. And their ability to move through space without stepping on one another’s toes is the result of painstaking positioning and programming, rather than Spot’s obstacle avoidance feature.

Der Job war echte Knochenarbeit, aber recht gut bezahlt und das Kardio-Training gab es so sehr dazu, dass ich nach manchen Schichten vor Erschöpfung auf meinem Heimweg kotzen gehen musste. Zu Peak-Zeiten wie Weihnachten oder Ostern mussten nicht wenige von uns „Ausladern“ drei bis fünf Tonnen pro Schicht, die dann auch schon mal länger als geplant ging, aus den Containern auf die Laufbänder heben. Hat mir damals finanziell nicht nur den Arsch sondern die Familie gerettet. Ich habe es dennoch gehasst, wobei ich wusste, dass das für mich nur von geringer Dauer sein würde, weil meine Ausbildung, die ich unbedingt nochmal nachlegen wollte, dann auch bald vorbei sein würde – und ich keine Pakete mehr aus irgendwelchen Containern auf Laufbänder laden müsste. Das dachten dort damals einige Studenten auch mal, wie sie sagten, und vernachlässigten ihr eigentliches Studium ob der dortigen Schufterei so sehr, dass sie einfach nur noch schuften gingen und mitunter ihr Studium abbrachen, um das, was man wohl Karriere nennt, bei jenem Paketdienstleister machen zu können. So wurden aus angehenden Biologen mitunter schon mal Schichtleiter im Zusteller-Business. Aber auch das gut bezahlt.

Ich habe zu den Kollegen von damals keinerlei Kontakt mehr und weiß demnach nicht, wie die ihr Leben so weiter organisiert haben oder ob die in Reinickendorf immer noch dafür sorgen, dass eure Pakete täglich pünktlich zugestellt werden können. Aber bei Boston Dynamics haben sie mit „Stretch“ jetzt einen Roboter, der genau den Job übernimmt, den wir dort damals gemacht haben. Und der macht den, ohne danach kotzen zu müssen. Und – und das ist daran nicht ganz so geil – der macht den halt auch, ohne dafür gut bezahlt zu werden. Wobei, so ehrlich will ich sein, der halt auch keine Pakete durch die Lüfte wirft, wie damals jeder von uns. Für etwaige Schäden kam nämlich der Arbeitgeber auf.

Neues aus dem Hause Boston Dynamics: Atlas, der uns mittlerweile allen bekannte humanoid wirkende Roboter, kann jetzt auch Gymnastik, was ihn noch menschlicher wirken lässt. Und wie ich es jedes Mal schreibe, wenn ich über Atlas schreibe: gleichsam beeindruckend wie unheimlich.

Atlas uses its whole body — legs, arms, torso — to perform a sequence of dynamic maneuvers that form a gymnastic routine. We created the maneuvers using new techniques that streamline the development process. First, an optimization algorithm transforms high-level descriptions of each maneuver into dynamically-feasible reference motions. Then Atlas tracks the motions using a model predictive controller that smoothly blends from one maneuver to the next.

Neues von Boston Robotics: deren Spot zieht im Rudel jetzt auch schon mal einen ausgewachsenen LKW.

It only takes 10 Spotpower (SP) to haul a truck across the Boston Dynamics parking lot (~1 degree uphill, truck in neutral). These Spot robots are coming off the production line now and will be available for a range of applications soon.

Handle is a mobile manipulation robot designed for logistics. Handle autonomously performs mixed SKU pallet building and depalletizing after initialization and localizing against the pallets. The on-board vision system on Handle tracks the marked pallets for navigation and finds individual boxes for grasping and placing.

When Handle places a boxes onto a pallet, it uses force control to nestle each box up against its neighbors. The boxes used in the video weigh about 5 Kg (11 lbs), but the robot is designed to handle boxes up to (15 Kg) (33 lb). This version of Handle works with pallets that are 1.2 m deep and 1.7 m tall (48 inches deep and 68 inches tall).
