DIY: Ein Kanu aus ein paar Sperrholzplatten bauen

Lost Wax wollte neulich ein paar Tage mit dem Kanu durch die Gegend schippern und dachte, das wäre am geilsten, wenn er das mit einem selber gebauten Kanu machen würde. So hat er sich ein paar Platten Sperrholz besorgt und einfach mal angefangen, eins zu bauen. Mit jeder Menge Epoxidharz, Gaffa und Kabelbindern. Was man halt so braucht. Jedenfalls hat das am Anfang alles gar nicht mal so gut funktioniert und er musste immer wieder optimieren, was diese Dokumentation des Entstehungsprozesses außerordentlich sympatisch macht.

I decided to make a cheap canoe, so I started looking around online. I found a few plans for making plywood canoes and finally settled on the Quick Canoe 155 designed by Michael Storer. Apparently it can be built in a week, however I took a lot longer than that, likely because I spent lots of time trying to make it look pretty :)

This is not a tutorial, more just a look at how I did things.

Ich bin gerade ein wenig beeindruckt. Sieht scheiße anstrengend aus, ist aber ein Weg, ans Ufer zu kommen, wenn mal alle Paddel über Bord gegangen sein sollten.

Die Männer von Northmen schlagen auf traditionelle Weise aus einem Stamm ein Dugout Canoe, einen Einbaum. Dieses Handwerk, der Sound dazu, die Kamera. So viel Liebe!

„This is a documentary movie uncovering the difficult and time consuming process of making traditional expanded dugout canoe using mostly traditional hand tools and techniques.

The master woodworker in this movie is Richard (Rihards Vidzickis) – an experienced green wood worker, wood sculptor and dugout canoe maker. Richard’s passion to green wood and solid wood creations has grown together with him since his childhood days. Richard’s father is also a wood worker and carpenter and has led his son into the beautiful world of working with wood. Richard has gone through all the traditional steps of becoming a master woodworker – starting from an apprentice, then journeyman and then receiving his Master degree in Latvian chamber of crafts. Richard’s passion to wood is not only sculpturing and carving it but also knowing the wood in a scientific level. So Richard has studied in Technical university as a student and reached his degree of Doctor in engineering materials science, so he has combined the craft, nature and science in his life and work.“
