Neulich wurde über den Schachspieler Hans Niemann behauptet, er hätte den Großmeister Magnus Carlsen nur deshalb besiegt, weil er beim Spiel Analkugeln im Hintern gehabt hätte, die über einen Computer gesteuert wurden, der die Kugeln dann vibrieren lies, um Züge vorzuschlagen. Soweit, so normal. Keine Ahnung, ob da was dran ist, aber bei Adafruit Industries lies man sich davon inspirieren und baute mit dem Cheekmate einen Butt Plug, der genau das kann, was Niemann als Betrugsmasche vorgeworfen wurde. Natürlich, nicht um damit zu betrügen!

Social media is abuzz lately over the prospect of cheating in tournament strategy games. Is it happening? How is that possible with officials watching? Could there be a hidden receiver somewhere? What can be done to rectify this? These are probing questions!

We’ll get to the bottom of this by making a simple one-way hidden communicator using Adafruit parts and the Adafruit IO service. Not for actual cheating, of course, that would be asinine…in brief, a stain on the sport…but to record for posterior whether this sort of backdoor intrusion is even plausible or just an internet myth.

An inexpensive chess set can sell for $20, but a handcrafted wooden set certified for the World Chess Championship costs $500. Much of the set’s value lies in just one piece: the knight. Each knight must be carved by hand to look exactly the same. Making this one piece takes two hours, and there are fewer than 10 people trained to carve knights for the championship chess sets.

Der Künstler und Musiker Doc Pop hat ein eindimensionales Schachspiel entworfen und als PDF zum Ausdrucken zur Verfügung gestellt. Mir ist noch nicht endgültig klar, wie sich die Schachregeln hierauf übersetzen lassen, werde das allerdings wohl mal ausprobieren.

1D Chess is a fun, innovative chess variant played on a single row of 16 squares. Each player begins with one of each piece and must take their opponent’s king to win. The rules are intuitive for new and expert players alike but offer a refreshing twist on the classic game of chess.

Eher was für die mitlesenden Schachliebhaber. Genau genommen wohl nur für die. Ein paar Nerds haben unter ChessRoots.com mehr als 800 Millionen Schachpartien gesammelt, die Eröffnungszüge und ihre Reaktionen darauf in grafischen Darstellungen zeigen. Dafür liebe ich das Internet.

I decided to play around with processing some PGNs of chess games myself and see what I could make. And after talking about the project with a friend who is less interested in chess, but more interested in web design, we decided to collaborate.

Initially, we were going to process a few thousand games, mostly for personal interest. But pretty soon we came across the whopping 800 million game (as of 2019) Lichess database. This was perfect as it contained a wide range of player abilities and time controls, and had such a large number of games that even after being filtered, the sample size would be large enough to draw conclusions from.

After some work, we were able to process all chess states with at least ~800 games (out of the 800 million game database). Using this threshold allowed us to transform the more than 1TB of Lichess PGN’s into a much more manageable 60GB of chess state data.

Ich sitze hier gerade und höre seit Stunden zwei Tagen diesen Ambient-Mix aus dem Hause Jazzanova. Dazu kommt dieses Video rein, das W&M dabei zeigt, wie er/sie/es ein Mikro-Schachset dreht und drechselt. Und das passt irgendwie ganz wunderbar meditativ zusammen. Schach, Handwerk, Ambient. Besser geht’s gerade nicht.

Für mich ist Schach ja einer der Gradmesser zur AI, aber was weiß ich schon. Ich würde in diesem Fall ein Spiel wagen.

This manipulator works with Arduino Leonardo and with 4 servos Tower Pro SG-90. You can ask some questions in comments, i’ll try to answer on some of them. I don’t want do tutorial about this project, because it’s very difficult to replicate it.

This is a chess board that I made with my father. It is made out of Walnut, Soft Maple and Jatoba wood. It took several weeks to create and is 100% playable! Each ’square‘ has a magnet embedded in it, as does each chess piece for easy movement of the pieces.
