Die BBC hat ihre Soundeffekt-Bibliothek auf nicht weniger als 33.000 Samples aufgestockt, die dort jetzt zum kostenlosen Download bereitstehen.

Indexed into categories, the sounds span everything from footsteps and transport to nature and machines. Among the plethora of sounds covered are reindeer grunts, rain, clocks, horses walking in mud, common frog calls and crowds at the 1989 FA Cup Final. And that barely scratches the surface.

The sounds have been released under a non-commercial use license (a RemArc License) as part of the BBC’s RemArc programme, which is “designed to help trigger memories in people with dementia using BBC Archive material as stimulation“.

A RemArc License stipulates that the samples can only be used for research, educational or personal projects, and therefore can’t be legally sampled in music that is then sold.

With ‚Echoes from the Club‘, Anna Hjalmarsson explores the sonics of the resting club space. The otherwise vibrant and noisy places where people gather to let off steam for a few hours now lie idle during the pandemic.

But what does a club sound like when there is no music, no background noise, no loud conversations? Anna Hjalmarsson has collected various sounds that capture the soundscape of an empty club. Compiled in a sample pack, the release comprises three types of sounds: field recordings that echo the space as an acoustic environment, tracing its walls, hangers, rails, or bar utensils; drum samples played through the club’s sound system and recorded on-site; and processed sound loops based on the recordings.

‚Echoes from the Club‘ is a homage to the club as a collective space for music and shared experience. The project tracks down the inverted intensity of its idleness while temporarily emptied of its purpose.

The pack contains 63 one-shot drum samples, 33 field-recorded samples, and 31 loops. All sounds were recorded in stereo at the Robert Johnson Club in Offenbach.

Es ist jetzt gut 10 Jahre her, dass ich, damals noch allein, das letzte Mal Musik veröffentlicht habe. Seitdem hatten Rudi und ich immer wieder mal vor, gemeinsam Musik zu machen und zu veröffentlichen. Lange blieb es nur bei dem Vorhaben.

Als ich vor zwei Jahren dann einen Herzinfarkt hatte und 10 Tage im Krankenhaus lag, dachte ich, dass es jetzt an der Zeit sei, aus diesem Vorhaben Realität werden zu lassen. Man weiß ja nie, wie viel Zeit einem noch bleibt und ganz ohne noch mal Musik veröffentlicht zu haben, will ich dann doch nicht gehen. Ich nahm mir im Krankenbett meinen Rechner, meine Kopfhörer und machte den Track, der hier als „Auf Station“ mit drauf ist und eigentlich erst als Nachfolger zu „Unterm Bassphalt der Strand“ gedacht war. Ganz lange klang der ganz anders als die jetzt veröffentlichte Version. Rudi und ich haben den vor ein paar Monaten dann doch komplett umgebaut.

Überhaupt haben wir in den letzten Monaten sehr intensiv und vor allem verdammt effektiv gebastelt. Es ist wahnsinnig inspirierend mit ihm zu arbeiten. Ich habe schon immer mit anderen Leuten gemeinsam musiziert, aber eben noch nie so effizient wie mit ihm. Da passt einfach alles zusammen und fließt.

Einige Tunes hat er mitgebracht, einige kommen von mir, über alle haben wir dann gemeinsam gehorcht und final zu Ende gebracht. Andere sind dann komplett gemeinsam entstanden. Mitunter innerhalb von zwei Nächten. Ein Track brauchte drei Wochen. Rudi hasst es, so lange an einem Song zu schrauben, weil er dann schon wieder fünf bis zwölf neue Ideen hat, denen er währenddessen nicht nachgehen kann. Aber es ist wie es schon immer war: gut Ding will manchmal Weile haben. Und so haben wir uns gut zwei Jahre Zeit gelassen, dass das Album jetzt so klingt, wie es klingt – und wir lieben einfach alles daran. Weil es in seiner Summe klingt, als wäre es ein langer Track mit kurzen Pausen. Wir waren zwischenzeitlich immer etwas unsicher, ob wie die verschiedenen Soundideen klanglich zusammenbekommen würden. Aber am Ende klingt „Es macht auch wirklich keiner mit!“ in unseren Ohren perfekt. Genau so wie es klingen sollte.

Im Spätsommer waren wir mit dem Bulli auf dem von uns so sehr geliebten Meeresrausch-Gelände, um über ein Wochenende hinweg alle Mixdowns zu machen. Draußen. Keiner von uns beiden glaubte auf dem Hinweg, dass das an einem Wochenende zu schaffen sei. Keiner sagte das. Als wir dort ankamen, bauten wir alles auf und arbeiteten verdammt fokusiert daran, das zu schaffen. Sonntag früh waren wir durch, schleppten die riesengroße Bluetooth-Box an den Peenestrand legten uns dort hin, schauten in den Himmel und ballerten volle Möhre dieses Album, unser Album in den Sonnenaufgang – was für ein grandioser Moment!

Überhaupt war der ganze Prozess dieses Album zu machen immer wieder großartig. Von der Idee, den ganzen Klangskizzen, die sich mehr und mehr zu endgültigen Tracks formten. Euer Wille, dass Ding auf Vinyl haben zu wollen, die Covergestaltung, die Max übernahm, der früher als Jugendlicher von mir betreut wurde und heute studierter Designer ist, das Mastering, das Sven Weisemann übernommen hat, die Shirts zu drucken. Die Kommunikation mit Rand Muzik, die die Platten pressten, die Abende, an denen man all die Tracks mit guten Freunden hörte und deren Meinungen dazu haben wollte. Und dann der Moment, in dem man dann im Presswerk steht und sein Baby aus dem Karton holt und dann aus dem Cover zieht. Leudde, das ist ein großartiges Fühl! Wirklich!

Nun stehen die Scheiben hier, werden von uns noch bedruckt, bevor wir sie endgültig an euch verschicken werden.

Chillhop Records might be the perfect label for those who need to get work done. Much like ambient and classical, the music on Chillhop can easily block distractions. The sound is a sample-based blend of smooth jazz and boom-bap to which people have caught on: the label’s most popular YouTube stream, “Chill Gaming/Study Beats,” has up to 6,000 people tuning in each day (the channel itself has 1.1 million subscribers). “A lot of people have just started to realize that this music is really good for studying,” says Bas van Leeuwen, founder of Chillhop Records.

Natürlich kommt auch der neuste Sampler mit feinsten, rauchgeschwängerten Dopebeats, die die kalten Wochen hoffentlich erträglicher machen. Von dem, was ich bis hier gehört habe, gehe ich davon aus, dass das so klappen wird. Soweit ein rundum gelungenes Album.

Ich bin jetzt nicht so sehr der Neil Young Fan, finde diese Nachricht allerdings dennoch begrüßenswert: Neil Young öffnet sein komplettes Archiv – Sämtliche Musik jetzt im Gratis-Download.

Neil Young beglückt uns nicht nur mit einem neuen Album, „The Visitor“, er hat nun auch seinen Backkatalog online veröffentlicht – mit kostenlosem Zugriff, also Download. Darunter zehn unveröffentlichte Alben.

Gerade im Hinblick darauf, dass Young seit Jahren die seines Erachtens mindere Qualität bemängelt, die, Download- und Streaming-Service anbieten, ist dieser Move sehr interessant. Offenbar will er es mit seinem Neil Young Archiv besser machen. Die kostenlosen Downloads gibt es erstmal bis Juli 2018. Danach soll eine kleine Gebühr fällig werden.
