My attempt at drumming through TOOL’s discography in one take. I want to thank my family and friends for the endless support! I also want to thank everyone else for taking the time to share this experience with me. I have definitely gained a greater level of appreciation for the compositional work of Danny Carey and TOOL. Although I do not do Danny complete justice, being able to move past mistakes is something I learned. While I wish I could go back to fix things, I also feel a sense of accomplishment being able to complete something that was once just an idea. Additionally, I want to note that only songs with percussive elements were included. Sweat and Disgustipated were not included for copyright reasons.

Trommeln haben etwas, was andere Instrumente nicht haben: Sie reißen uns mit. Wir finden sie cool, wir lieben den Drummer einer Band mitunter mehr als den Sänger, der vorne an der Rampe steht. Oder wir trommeln selbst und fühlen uns plötzlich wie im siebten Himmel, in Trance, in Japan oder Afrika, weil wir eine Taiko spielen oder eine Djembe. Trommeln erzählen große Geschichten, und die, die sie spielen, erst recht. Ja, es gibt eine Art Trommel-Hype. Die Dokumentation unternimmt eine Reise zu berühmten genialen Trommlern wie Trilok Gurtu, Curt Cress und Manu Katché, die erzählen, warum sie sich mit ihrem Instrument manchmal als Maler, Dialogpartner ihrer Mitmusiker oder als wilder Jugendlicher fühlen. Wir fahren nach Japan zu Asano Taiko, wo aus jahrhundertealten Ulmenstämmen riesige verzierte Trommeln werden. Über die populäre afrikanische Djembe und die zu ihrem Klang getanzten Bewegungen gibt es Erstaunliches zu sagen, wie der in Mali forschende Musikethnologe Rainer Polak berichtet. Wir fahren in das schönste Musikinstrumentenmuseum der Welt, ins mim in Brüssel, wo man bestaunen kann, wie unterschiedliche Kulturen ihre mal schlichten, mal reich verzierten Trommeln entwickelt haben, um Menschen zu locken, zu mahnen oder vor Freude tanzen zu lassen. Und wir sehen: Jede Trommel ist ein Instrument mit einer eigenen Persönlichkeit, und ihr Spieler ist der, der diese Persönlichkeit aufs Wunderschönste erzählen kann.

In April 2011, Wynton Marsalis launched “Hidden in Plain View: Meanings in American Music,” a three-year performance and lecture series at Harvard University. The six lecture series began with “Music as Metaphor,” an interpretation of the many unobserved symbols in American music and their illumination of the democratic process, and featured performances by Marsalis alongside Ali Jackson (drums), Dan Nimmer (piano), Walter Blanding (tenor sax), Carlos Henriquez (bass), James Chirillo (guitar and banjo), and Mark O’Connor (violin).
