„Tikiman Vol. 2 is a heady dub statement…Are you ready to dive in ?“

Ja, man!

Ich habe neulich erst mit jemandem darüber gesprochen, dass es doch irgendwie komisch sei, welch essenzielle Bedeutung der Dub für die musikalische Sozialisierung für so viele um uns herum hatte. Ganz gleich, in welchem musikalischen Genre wir dann jeder für sich gelandet ist. Der Dub zieht sich bei so vielen als roter Faden durch die musikalischen Biographien und ich weiß von nicht wenigen, derer, die den Kalender hier mit Inhalten füllen, dass das genau der Fall ist und jene Spezialist:innen diesen Mix von rrrobyn hart feiern werden. Weil „Ein Mix als Hommage an eine Musikrichtung ohne die es meine anderen Lieblingsgenres (Jungle, Dubstep) überhaupt nicht geben würde: Dub.“ Da schließe ich mich uneingeschränkt an, auch wenn meine Genres heute andere sind. Außerdem gehe ich jetzt ausgiebig am Strand spazieren.

Wackie’s is an American independent record label specialized in reggae and dub music. Lloyd Barnes founded the label in 1976, and it is possibly the longest-running American recording studio for reggae.

Wackie’s is run by Lloyd „Bullwackie“ Barnes, who was born in Trench Town, Jamaica, and moved to New York in 1967. He worked construction and bought the equipment for the studio at the nearby Sam Ash store. He started his studio at 4781 White Plains Road in The Bronx, as one of the earliest reggae studios in the country, with a record store named Wackie’s House of Music nextdoor. Low on money, he had to be technically resourceful; his recording techniques added to the distinct quality of the sound.

ich habe lange nichts von Pablo Bolivar gehört. Dass, obwohl ich den musikalisch mehr als nur schätze. Jetzt rutscht mir gerade sein Deep Breakfast hier rein und das passt mir nicht nur zeitlich sehr gut. It was a big honour to play again at the Fusion Festival this year. Big up Jah Chalice Soundsystem and Dandelion Soundsystem for the heavy soundsystems and the whole Rootsbase crew for the organization. Thanks to all the beautiful people who skanked and shared such nice vibes on the dancefloor. It was a real pleasure to play for you.

Fusion Festival läuft noch und dennoch dürften sich nicht wenige heute Richtung nach Hause bewegen. Für mich waren die sonntäglichen Abende an der Dubstation ja immer die schönsten Zeiten von allen in Lärz, aber hat ja nicht jeder noch die halbe Woche frei, um sich in der Zivilisation zu akklimatisieren. Jedenfalls landen gerade die ersten Mitschnitte des diesjährigen Lärzklopfens auf Soundcloud und weil es eine mir lieb gewonnene Tradition geworden ist, sammle ich die alle in einer Playlist – damit ihr es nicht tun müsst. Ich aktualisiere die Liste fortlaufend, da kommt ganz ganz sicher noch ganz ganz viel dazu. Im letzten Jahr waren es am Ende über 350 Sets. Over his 30-plus year career, St. Hilaire has become one of dance music’s quietly legendary figures. Born and raised in the Caribbean island Dominica, he moved to Berlin in 1994 and has lent both his voice and his musicianship to some of the most iconic electronic music from the German capital – and beyond. Renowned for his collaborations with Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus (AKA Rhythm & Sound), he has also appeared on records with Deadbeat, Rhauder, Larry Heard aka Mr. Fingers and Stereotyp (G-Stone Recordings), amongst others.

However, few know the extent of St. Hilaire’s compositional and technical mastery. From his home studio in Kreuzberg, which includes an extensive collection of vintage hardware, self-built instruments and notebooks scribbled with endless lyrics, he has created a vast archive of material spanning ambient dub, avant-jazz, lush techno and lovers rock.

Mein Lieblingsnürnberger Oakin frönt im ersten Türchen dem Dub. Das macht er gerne und das macht er verdammt gut. Spätestens bei Rhythm & Sound bin ich komplett drin und geb mich den Offbeat Chords hin, als gäbe es nichts passenderes. Da ist auch egal, dass hier der Winter Einzug hält. Der Sound wärmt von innen. Von mir aus auch mit einem Dübel in der Hand, aber das müsst ihr selber wissen.

Zurücklehnen geht dazu allemal, dem Tag entspannt ins Gesicht gucken ohnehin – und vielleicht nicht all zu viel dazu machen. Zumindest nicht mehr als unbedingt nötig. Dub be good to me.

Saetchmo, der Wizard of Dub, der seit gefühlt 100 Jahren und immer noch wöchentlich eure Basstherapie in seiner Echochamber spielt, mit einer Melange aus Dub und Techno, wobei das dann die eher fluffige Variante davon ist.

Eigentlich steht er ja für die doch härteren Varianten des Dubs und des Drum & Bass, aber natürlich kann er auch das hier und so begleitet uns der sein Mix ganz ohne jeglichen Stress in einen milden Wintertag.

Gestern Abend erst bekommen und heute schon in diesem Internetz. Und das obwohl ich in diesem Jahr ganz vergessen habe, ihn zu fragen. Auf manche Dinge ist eben immer Verlass. In diesem Fall auch auf wohltemperierte Tunes, die Spaß machen und auch nicht auf eine Portion Funk verzichten.

Vor ein paar Wochen kündigte ausgerechnet Om Unit an, eine Platte raushauen zu wollen, die eine Symbiose aus Dub und Acid sein sollte und ich freute mich tierisch drauf, weil es diese Idee bis dahin nicht mal bei Hardfloor gegeben hatte. Weil sie vorher offenbar kein anderer hatte. Und dann zieht der das von Bristol aus einfach mal komplett auf einem ganzen Album durch und vereint dort den Acid mit Dub. Und das ist unfassbar großartig! Ich liebe es und habe es mal wieder nicht geschafft, rechtzeitig das Vinyl zu bestellen, das jetzt – natürlich – schon wieder mal ausverkauft ist. Ich hasse mich dafür. Aber digital ist „Acid Dub Studies“ dennoch noch zu haben. Und das ist State of the art. Acid meets dub – und das kannste besser einfach nicht machen. Ganz großes Tennis in Kniestrümpfen und für mich jetzt schon ein Anwärter auf eines der Alben des Jahres 2021. So gut einfach.

Talking to us about his mix, Stillhead said; „This is essentially the 10th instalment in my Brightest Dark Places mix series, which has spanned years and essentially tackles my obsession with the combination of dub-influence, and multiple genres of deep electronic music. It’s the sort of thing I’d love to play out, it’s the way my productions are going and it’s sort of flirting with this idea of „future dub“ which I’d like to try and nail down as a sound.“

Sinai is one of the UK’s most versatile sound systems. Deep Medi, Tectonic Recordings and Young Echo are some of the labels and collectives to have hosted the roaming Sheffield audio installation, which bridges the gap between traditional dub sound system culture and modern bass music.

Founded by Huw Williams, Sinai Sound System began life as part of the travelling speaker stack for legendary dub outfit Iration Steppas. Over the years, Sinai has grown in size and reputation, travelled the continent and endured a devastating flood in its hometown.

Superschönes Wochenende gehabt. Bad Sulza, Therme, Liquid Sound zum 25. Endlich mal wieder Unterwassermusik gespielt – und mal wieder bis zum Ende genossen. Sich zum Sound unter Wasser gehen lassen. Mit geschlossenen Augen im Wasser treibend die Orientierung verloren. Weil Musik unter Wasser immer noch so ganz anders funktioniert. Drei Stunden Zeit gehabt, selber dafür sorgen, ohne das selber unter Wasser gehört zu haben. Ich hoffe, die Wasserndennen haben einen guten Film gefahren. Hier mein Soundtrack für sie in der letzten Nacht.

Ambient dub is one of my favorite sub-genres. I’ve done several „dubby & dreamy“ mixes over the years. I have found that these ambient dub mixes work well as stargazing companions. So the timing for this one is good as the Perseid meteor shower is at it’s peak. This mix follows that same dubby/dreamy mode that I love.
