This project was initiated by a job I did for the National Palace Museum of Taipeh. The museum ran an exhibition on culture treasures of the history of Taiwan in 2020. I was hired to create fluid and abstract interpretations of some iconic items, a collection of several drawings and artworks. I decided to develop my existing methods further, stepping away from stock paints and ink and creating most of the paints myself. One important aspect was to implement natural colors and realistic earth tones to the color palette and focus more on details than on a commercial look with punchy color and contrast.
Over a period of 4 months, I experimented with natural substances like sand, stone powder and historic pigments. Some of these supplies are rare and expensive, for example jade and malachite powder.

Japan’s Himawari-8 satellite is in stationary orbit over New Guinea where it captures some truly amazing imagery of the Earth. Every day the satellite captures imagery of the western Pacific, Australia, and parts of Asia, Antarctica & Alaska.

Glittering Blue is a video of Himawari 8’s imagery from just one day. The video shows 24 hours of imagery from August 3rd 2015 in 12 seconds. What makes Glittering Blue stand out is its sheer size, which really showcases the amazing quality of Himawari-8’s imagery.

Normally, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has its cameras fixed on the surface of the Moon. But on May 24, 2014, flight engineers directed the spacecraft to turn back for a quick look at Earth and one of our closest planetary neighbors—Mars.

When the spacecraft’s LROC camera captured this image, Earth was about 376,687 kilometers (234,062 miles) away from LRO and Mars was 112.5 million kilometers away. In other words, Mars was about 300 times farther from the Moon than the Earth. (Note: Mars has been contrast-stretched in order to improve its visibility.)

Das hat gerade noch gefehlt. Ein GIF der sich drehenden Erde in Echtzeit. „I got bored and made a real-time gif of Earth„. Gut, man muss sich schon ein bisschen Zeit nehmen um das in seiner Gänze genießen zu können, aber von Nichts kommt bekanntlich auch Nichts. In dem GIF stecken 384 Frames, die je 255 Sekunden zu sehen sind. Das Ende für jedes mobile Datenvolumen, obwohl die 4 MB da noch recht schlank scheinen.

Und weil sich soviel Zeit diese Menschen im Internet ja gar nicht nehmen wollen, wurde ganz schnell wieder „Fake“ gebrüllt. Dann kam eben ein anderer und hat das GIF einfach ein wenig schneller gemacht und siehe da, es dreht sich. Für die Ungeduldigen. Aber auch die finden dann noch was zu mäkeln: „Der Besserwisser möchte anmerken, dass die exakte Dauer einer Umdrehung 86.164,1 Sekunden beträgt – das GIF ist zu langsam ;)“ Muss ja alles seine Ordnung haben.

Bei Superzellen handelt es sich eigentlich um Einzelzellen, die aber durch ihren hohen Grad an organisierter Struktur ausgezeichnet sind. Sie können auch in einem Zell-Cluster oder einer Böenlinie eingebettet sein.

Wesentliches Merkmal einer Superzelle ist eine hochreichende persistente Rotation des Aufwindbereiches, die so genannte Mesozyklone. Hochreichend heißt, dass mindestens ein Drittel der Aufwinde rotiert; persistent heißt, dass die Rotation mindestens so lange andauert wie ein Konvektionszyklus. Das sind gewöhnlich etwa 10 bis 20 Minuten, per Definition muss allerdings mindestens 30 Minuten lang Rotation vorliegen, damit man von einer Superzelle sprechen kann. Dabei überwiegt die zyklonale Rotation: auf der Nordhalbkugel entgegen dem Uhrzeigersinn, auf der Südhalbkugel umgekehrt.
