Every spring, fish swim right through Utrecht, looking for a place to spawn and reproduce. Some swim all the way to Germany. There is a problem, however: they often have to wait a long time at the Weerdsluis lock on the west side of the inner city, as the lock rarely opens in spring. We have come up with a solution: the fish doorbell! An underwater camera has been set up at the lock, and the live feed is streamed to the homepage. If you see a fish, press the digital fish doorbell. The lock operator is sent a signal and can open the lock if there are enough fish. Now you can help fish make it through the canals of Utrecht.

How it works

Pressing the fish doorbell notifies the lock operator that there are fish waiting to pass. The operator can decide whether or not to open the lock. The lock seldom opens in spring, but can now be opened daily, if necessary. The fish doorbell allows us to work together to ensure that fish do not have to wait as long at the Weerdsluis lock. This is good news, because it means they are less likely to be eaten by other animals, such as grebes and cormorants.

In einer Kochsendung des Österreichischen Rundfunks haben sie während einer Live-Sendung eine vom Aussterben bedrohte Fischart gebraten. Es handelte sich dabei um einen Frauennerfling. Der Fisch steht in Österreich auf der Roten Liste der gefährdeten Arten. Dieser wurde zu Fischfrikadelle verarbeitet. Dazu gab es ein Gläschen Weißwein. Der Umstand sorgte in Österreich für einigen Wirbel. Der ORF entschuldigte sich mittlerweile für den Fisch in der Pfanne. „Vergangene Woche haben wir in ‚Köstlich Kulinarisch‘ einen Fisch verkocht, den sogenannten Frauennerfling. Der ist aber ganzjährig geschont, dafür entschuldigen wir uns. Wir hatten diesbezüglich eine andere Information“, erklärte Moderatorin Claudia Schubert in einer darauf folgenden Sendung.

To produce sound, a rib that lies next to the swim bladder is moved by a special muscle into a piece of cartilage. When the rib is released it hits the swim bladder and makes the drumming sound. The rib is much harder in males, which explains why females do not produce sounds.

The scientists have not established why the fish make such loud sounds but suggested it could help navigate murky waters or be an aggressive tactic used by males to warn off competition.

Well, when they do bite people, it seems to mostly happen in scenarios when they’re being handled; when people are spilling food or cleaning their fishing catch in the water; or when people disturb piranhas while the fish are mating or guarding their eggs during the wet season. Starvation stress is also thought to lead red-bellied piranhas to increasingly bold, aggressive behavior.

Es gibt ja Leute, die nicht ganz so gerne in Seen oder Meeren baden gehen. Manche von denen tun das wohl auch, weil sie Angst haben, dass sie ein Fisch beißen könnte. Jene Menschen sollten dann jetzt lieber nicht an Frankreichs Stränden ins Wasser gehen. Dort nähern sich ob der deutlich erhöhten Wassertemperatur Drückerfische den Küsten und beißen dort vermehrt sich im Wasser befindliche Personen.

Über 40 Badegäste seien alleine am Montag am Strand von Hendaye nahe der spanischen Grenze am Atlantik von Fischen gebissen worden. Auch in der Nähe von Cannes an der Côte d’Azur wurde ein Schwimmer im nur 50 Zentimeter tiefen Wasser gebissen. Einen weiteren Fall gab es nach einem Bericht des Senders BFMTV in der Bucht von Saint-Tropez.

Experte Samuel Somot vom Nationalen Meteorologischen Forschungsinstitut (CNRM) erklärte dem „Parisien“, dass das Wasser an der französischen Mittelmeerküste statt jahreszeitüblicher 21 bis 22 Grad aktuell bis zu 28 Grad warm sei. Hakone-en Aquarium in the country’s Kanagawa prefecture has typically fed its penguins and otters Japanese horse mackerel, but has started switching some of it out for a cheaper kind of mackerel.

And the animals aren’t impressed.

“[The penguins] take it into their mouths at first, but then they decide they don’t like it and drop it,” aquarium head Hiroki Shimamoto told Agence France-Presse, adding that the otters have also been rejecting the cheap stuff.

Mit einem Seil zogen Angler das etwa 1,50 Meter lange Tier an Land. Dort stellte sich heraus, dass sich die Schildkröte in den Kiemen des riesigen Fischs verbissen hatte, als er sie fressen wollte. Beide Tiere seien wohl erstickt beziehungsweise kurz davor gewesen, vermutete einer der Beobachter. Die Schildkröte, weil sie keine Luft mehr bekam, der Wels, weil seine Kiemen nicht mehr funktionierten.

What is more mesmerising than a school of fish, especially of striped eel catfish? These little guys tend to form a school as juveniles, up to a hundred individuals, to protect themselves from predators, and go about their lives on their own when they reach their sexual maturity. Fun fact, if the adults are venomous and can inflict a painful sting, the young ones can only produce a mild version of the venom, tingling the fingers of the people putting their hands in the school (which we don’t recommend you do!).

Letzte Woche haben sie am kalifornischen Laguna Beach dieses herrlich gruselige Exemplar eines Tiefseefisches gefunden, das so wohl bisher selten bis nie irgendwo aufgetaucht ist. Die Behörden des Crystal Cove State Park beschreiben den Lampenfisch als „Pacific Football Fish“, der normalerweise in dunklen Tiefen des Ozeans unterwegs ist. Und als wäre das nicht schon schaurig genug, beschreiben sie auch gleich noch das wirklich außergewöhnliche Paarungsverhalten dieser Tiere. Wild!

While females can reach lengths of 24 inches males only grow to be about an inch long and their sole purpose is to find a female and help her reproduce. Males latch onto the female with their teeth and become „sexual parasites,“ eventually coalescing with the female until nothing is left of their form but their testes for reproduction.

Irgendwelche Leute haben vermutlich in China einen Karpfen gefilmt, dessen Gesicht an die der Menschen erinnert. Snopes hat Hintergründe recherchiert und geht davon aus, dass dieses Video echt ist.

Ifeng News captured some close-up photographs of that fish. While the “human face” is still visible, these pictures make it apparent that this creature really has a fish-shaped head that only resembles a “human face” due to its unusual markings.
