In March 1917, Cobden-Sanderson declared publicly that Doves Press was closed, and its type had been “dedicated & consecrated” to the River Thames. “Nobody actually quite got it,” Green says. “And Cobden-Sanderson writes a letter to the solicitor saying, ‘No, I wasn’t talking figuratively. The type is gone.’” He didn’t want Walker to have access—or anyone else, for that matter.

Remarkably, Cobden-Sanderson recorded in his journals the exact date and location that he dumped the type into the water, which took him 170 trips to discard in its entirety. With each load weighing around 15 to 20 pounds, that’s a lot of metal. For 98 years, the type remained on the riverbed, much of it washed away over the decades or sunken into the silt as the tidal flow continually rose and fell.

Neutraface – a typeface known for its clean lines and its legibility from a distance – has been dubbed the unofficial font of gentrification, according to eagle-eyed Twitter and Instagram users who have spotted the typeface (and others like it) on buildings around the country.

For many of these professionals and tastemakers, the minimalism of Neutraface – with its thin, pointy, attention-grabbing lines – adds whimsy and elegance to a building. At the same time, as Neutraface house numbers have become too commonplace to ignore, some now associate them (along with gray paint jobs) with neighborhoods overtaken by construction and renovations.

That association also lends itself to other dystopian connections: cheap fixer-upper jobs done on the fly, rent hikes and people being displaced from their longtime homes. Whatever the meanings people make of these house numbers, Neutraface now seems both indivisible from – and an indicator of – the constant changes of our nation’s screwed-up housing market.

Graphic designers, and those interested in typography, may have done a cursory search through their font libraries, only to discover they don’t have Tiny Hand. That’s because, until Friday morning, the Tiny Hand font didn’t exist. Those same readers investigating the details of the type might be curious: Why are the proportions so strange? Why is the font almost all capital letters? Who made it, and why?

Der WWF Japan will mit dem Panda Font Project darauf aufmerksam machen, dass weltweit nur noch 1864 Pandas in freier Wildbahn leben und sie somit fast ausgestorben sind. Ob das gelingt, weiß ich nicht, aber ein Panda Font wollte ich ja schon immer mal haben (ohne das zu wissen). Bisher lässt sich allerdings keine downloadbare Version davon finden.

A panda-themed font has been created by WWF Japan to raise awareness and encourage donations for their panda fund-raising campaign. Each character features a stylized panda head, and was designed together with Ogilvy & Mather Japan.

According to the WWF, giant pandas are under severe threat from humans and are considered endangered. Only 1,864 of them exist in the wild. Using this font will help raise awareness of this sad fact and can make an impact on conservation efforts.

Sincerity Machine: The Comic Sans typewriter was made after viewing a document with a typewriter font present in it; I realized there was nothing stopping me from altering a typewriter to write in a different font. I used a laser engraving machine to etch new letters out of acrylic, and glued them onto the strikers of a 70’s era, Sears-branded Brother Charger 11 typewriter, which I found in the street a couple years ago. I also used a vinyl cutter to make new key covers as well.
