Das Atoa Aquarium in Kobe, Japan, bietet eine ungewöhnliche Ausstellung, in der Besucher den Geruch verschiedener Tierhintern kennenlernen können. Im Aquarium werden gerahmte Porträts mit Löchern gezeigt, aus denen künstlich erzeugte Tierhinterteilgerüche freigesetzt werden. Ein Video zeigt jemanden, der an den Porträts schnuppert. Die Gesichtsausdrücke lassen erahnen, dass da kein Parfüm freigesetzt wird.

Ich verstehe zwar nicht, warum man wissen muss, wie verschiedene Tierhintern riechen, aber die Existenz dieser Ausstellung zeigt, dass das zumindest möglich ist. Schön auch die Rahmen.

1959 wurde mit 83.476 Einwohnern pro km² eine der höchsten jemals aufgezeichneten Bevölkerungsdichten der Welt festgestellt. Für jeden Arbeiter standen Wohnräume mit ca. 9,9 Quadratmetern, für Verheiratete mit Familien doppelt so große Räume zur Verfügung. Toiletten, Bäder und Küchen wurden gemeinschaftlich genutzt. Die Infrastruktur wurde laufend ausgebaut, aufgrund der begrenzten Fläche auch vielfach unterirdisch. Neben den Wohn- und Verwaltungsgebäuden existierten auch Tempelanlagen und Schreine, eine Polizeistation, ein Postamt, Badeanstalten, eine Kläranlage, ein Kindergarten, Grund- und weiterführende Schulen, eine Turnhalle, ein Kino, Gaststätten, eine Kegelbahn, 25 Geschäfte, ein Hotel, ein Krankenhaus, ein Swimming-Pool und ein Bordell; lediglich ein Bestattungswesen fehlte.

In Japan existieren seit den 1940er Jahren sogenannte „Ongaku-Kissaten“, kleine Musikcafés, in die Leute gehen, um in Gesellschaft Musik zu hören. Ein kostbarer sozialer Raum zwischen Arbeit und Zuhause, „a home away from home“. Dieser „dritte Raum“ ist weder Zuhause (erster Raum) noch Arbeitsplatz (zweiter Raum), sondern ein Ort dazwischen: Hier kann man einfach nur sein.

Starting this month, the large machine with enormous arms, a crude, disproportionately small Wall-E-like head and coke-bottle eyes mounted on a truck – which can drive on rails – will be put to use for maintenance work on the company’s network.

Its operator sits in a cockpit on the truck, “seeing” through the robot’s eyes via cameras and operating its powerful limbs and hands remotely.

With a vertical reach of 12 metres (40ft), the machine can use various attachments for its arms to carry objects as heavy as 40kg (88lb), hold a brush to paint or use a chainsaw.

The year 1968 was a special time for Japan. It was emerging as a modern country. The Tokyo Olympics had just been held a few years prior. Bullet trains, high-speed expressways, and color television broadcasts were spreading throughout the land. The year before saw the Toyota 2000GT and Mazda Cosmo Sport, Japan’s contemporary sports cars, debut. It must have been incredibly exciting.
