Crafted from wood this device has two disks, each with a pattern of curved spokes that can rotate at different rates and direction to produce interesting illusions of motion via moiré interference effects. A ribbon spring drives an ingenious mechanism that uses ratchets (and the rotational momentum of the disks) to create the various visual modes- a half rotation of the disks will result in 20+ minutes of motion. With a full loading of the spring hours of motion will ensue. Another amazing creation by artist and designer William Le.

Carapace ist eine beeindruckende kinetische Skulptur von Derek Hugger, die die Bewegung einer Meeresschildkröte imitiert, die durch das Meer gleitet. Gebaut wurde sie aus über 600 hölzernen Teilen. Eine Kurbel steuert die komplexe Struktur von Zahnrädern und Mechanismen, die so organisch wie möglich fließen sollen. Hugger hat dafür stundenlang Videos von schwimmenden Schildkröten studiert. Geil!

Carapace is a wooden kinetic sculpture that simulates the motion of a sea turtle swimming. A complex series of mechanisms allows Carapace to swim up and down, tilt forward or back, and even lift its head up for a breath of air. As each mechanism is carefully linked to the next, each of Carapace’s flowing motions are driven by turning a single crank.

Vor Jahren schrieb ich hier mal über eine Digital-Uhr von Humans since 1982, die aus mehreren alten Analog-Uhren zusammengesetzt wurde und als dann neu vereintes Ensemble die Uhrzeit richtig wiedergeben konnte. Dazu gab es damals nur ein Foto. Mittlerweile gibt es auch ein Video. Und man kann das Teil im MoMA-Store kaufen. Für „schlappe“ $5K.

Clock Clock 24 is a statement-making object that re-contextualizes time through an ingenious marriage of analog and digital. Twenty-four round clocks come together to create one giant digital display. The clock hands are choreographed, liberating the clocks from the sole purpose of telling time. Can be set for 12 or 24 hour time in three different modes: minimal, medium or elaborate movement between minutes.

Sisyphus ist eine auf einem runden Tablett gelagerte Maschine des Künstlers Bruce Shapiro, die durch Magnete mit Murmeln in Sand malt – und das ziemlich ausdauernd. Das Ergebnis erinnert stark an die alte Technik der Sandmandalas. Dabei zusehen hat durchaus meditative Wirkung, kann ich mir gut vorstellen.

Bei genügend Fallhöhe, in diesem Fall hier 9 Meter, öffnen sich die aus Seide genähten Blüten wie ein Fallschirmen und beginnen quasi zu blühen. Entwickelt, gebaut und genäht wurden die Shylights im Studio Drift, die vier Jahre daran werkelten.

Most man-made objects have a static form, while everything natural in this world, including people, are subject to constant metamorphosis and adaptation to their surroundings. Shylight is the result of a question: how can an inanimate object mimic those changes that express character and emotions? After a research period of five years, Studio Drift found the final form to express their idea. It is a lamp that looks alive because of unpredictable, natural-looking movements: it descends to blossom in all its glorious beauty, to subsequently close and retreat upwards again. The Shylight is created out of many layers of silk, which cause it to move with the grace of a dancer. The movement of the lights can be controlled by an iPhone or iPad, opening up a range of possibilities such as a choreography to music. The fact that people react in a spontaneous and emotional way to these performative sculptures shows how the philosophy of Studio Drift functions exactly as it was meant.

The Shylights have a fall distance of 9 meters making it possible to create large compositions for high ceilinged spaces. A shylight installation can always be expended with additional Shylights.
