Out of all the footage I captured during the past three eruptions, this clip easily makes my nerdy heart beat the fastest. It looks like a great eye, lidless, wreathed in flame (anyone out there who got the reference?!). What you’re looking at is a top down view of a lava river rushing down a hill. The lava is so liquid, it’s moving almost as if it were water. This is because I recorded this very close to a vent further up the hill. The lava’s temperature is still close to 1200-1250 degrees Celsius here. Additionally, because it’s going downhill, it’s going even faster than you’d expect. When I spotted this “lavafall” from ground level, I immediately knew I needed to get my drone above it as that was where it would look really interesting to me.

EXPERIMENT with unique types of glass:
● REAL multi-layer laminated bulletproof glass;
● Fireproof glass made using a unique factory production process and some ingenious tools and machines :) It’s secret is that it comes with special gel between the layers of glass (more info in the video);

He took care to step and set up his tripod on pre-existing, cooled lava rock that was black and hosting new plant life (as opposed to the fresher, grey lava) to avoid danger. Even so, he faced some unique challenges.

“The fresh lava is called Pele’s hair,” says Tyler. “It’s really smooth and crunchy, like hard snow, and made of little glass needles. I came home with lava slivers all over my hands, on my gear, and on my lenses. It’s a whole other challenge that you don’t expect to have to deal with.”

Außergewöhnliche Aufnahmen brauchen außergewöhnliche Maßnahmen. Wer schließlich hat schon mal eine Kamera von Lava fluten lassen? Hier war es Erik Storm, der während eines Vulkanausbruchs auf Hawaii seine GoPro in einer Felsspalte geparkt hatte und diese dort dann angeblich vergass. Glühendes Lavagestein kroch dann träge in jene Felsspalte und begrab die Kamera unter sich, wobei diese – natürlich – schmolz. Mindestens die SD-Karte in der Cam aber überstand die Hitze, so dass Storm jetzt diese vielleicht einmaligen Aufnahmen zeigen kann.
