Like a lot of artists who play the Tiny Desk, the guys in Foo Fighters carefully curated and worked through their set for weeks leading up to their appearance, even taping out the dimensions of the Desk in a practice space to puzzle-out the close quarters. But once they were in the office, they tossed most of those plans. „If you put instruments in our hands and there are people,“ Dave Grohl jokes, „it’s fun to play!“

Seit Jahrzehnten nimmt ein gewisser Aadam Jacobs alle möglichen Live-Konzerte auf. Seine Sammlung von über 10.000 Konzerten seit 1984 umfasst Aufnahmen von Künstlern wie Nirvana, R.E.M., Tracy Chapman, den Pixies, Björk, Depeche Mode, Sonic Youth, The Cure und ganz vielen anderen. Dank der Unterstützung von Archivaren wird die gesamte Sammlung nun im Internet Archive veröffentlicht. Was für eine Fundgrube. Die Qualität der Aufnahmen schwankt, aber man hört halt immer die Live-Atmosphäre. Hier bei Tracy Chapman live im Cabaret Metro, 07.05.1988.

The growing Aadam Jacobs Collection is an internet treasure trove for music lovers, especially for fans of indie and punk rock during the 1980s through the early 2000s, when the scene blossomed and became mainstream. The collection features early-in-their-career performances from alternative and experimental artists like R.E.M., The Cure, The Pixies, The Replacements, Depeche Mode, Stereolab, Sonic Youth and Björk.

There’s also a smattering of hip-hop, including a 1988 concert by rap pioneers Boogie Down Productions. Devotees of Phish were thrilled to discover that a previously uncirculated 1990 show by the jam band is included. And there are hundreds of sets by smaller artists who are unlikely to be known to even fans with the most obscure tastes.

All of it is slowly becoming available for streaming and free download at the nonprofit online repository Internet Archive, including that nascent Nirvana show recording, with the audio from Jacobs’ cassette recorder cleaned up.

The humor of De La Soul has always been one of its calling cards. When DJ Maseo tells the Tiny Desk crowd, „Ladies and gentlemen, we’re a new group called De La Soul,“ he means it as a joke. But, in so many ways, one of the most influential groups in hip-hop is new: the duties have been reassessed, the focus has shifted and the newness of The Plugs is laid plain here at the Tiny Desk.

Nach einer zehnjährigen Schaffenspause und dem Verkauf von 50 Millionen Alben brachte Sade 2010 ihr Album „Soldier of Love“ heraus. Das fulminante Comeback wurde in einem Live-Mitschnitt aus der Citizens Bank Arena im kalifornischen Ontario am 4. September 2011 aufgezeichnet. Der zweistündige Live-Mitschnitt unter der Regie von Sophie Muller wurde für einen Grammy nominiert.

Die Show knüpft an die Soul- und Rhythm ’n’ Jazz-Fusion, für die Sade seit ihren Anfängen im Jahr 1983 steht. Sade war nicht nur in den 1980er Jahren weltweit erfolgreich, sondern auch in den folgenden Jahrzehnten. Die Gruppe verkaufte Millionen von Tonträgern und ihre Alben wurden mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet. Dennoch trat Sängerin Sade Adu im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Popstars nur selten in der Öffentlichkeit auf.

Dieser Konzert-Mitschnitt vereint das Spiel mit warmem Licht und cineastische Schwarz-Weiß-Sequenzen. Neben Klassikern wie ʺSmooth Operatorʺ, ʺThe Sweetest Tabooʺ, ʺYour Love Is Kingʺ, ʺParadiseʺ und ʺNo Ordinary Loveʺ präsentiert die Band auch Songs aus dem Album ʺSoldier of Loveʺ.
Helen Folasade Adu, bekannt unter ihrem Künstlernamen Sade, ist die Stimme und das Gesicht der Band. Die Sängerin, Songwriterin und Musikerin galt schon früh als ʺQueen des zeitgenössischen Soul und Rhythm ’n‘ Jazzʺ.

To celebrate the winter solstice I gathered a few friends and family members at home in Reykjavík. Sunrise Session III features Sandrayati, RAKEL and Salóme Katrín on vocals and 4 incredible string players, performing a few choice songs we felt fit the occasion.

On this shortest day of the year, this is our tribute to brighter days ahead. I truly hope you enjoy it. We loved making it.

31. Oktober 1991, Paramount Theatre von Seattle: Rockband Nirvana spielt ein Konzert, das sie an die Spitze katapultiert. Wenige Wochen nach der Veröffentlichung ihres Albums Nevermind, welches eine neue Ära in der internationalen Rockmusikszene einläutete, lieferten Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic und Dave Grohl eine raue, intensive und unglaublich authentische Performance ab.

Die drei Musiker auf der Bühne scheint eine unkontrollierbare Energie anzutreiben. Kurt Cobain, der schon damals in anderen Sphären unterwegs war, schreit seine Texte mit entwaffnender Wut heraus. Dave Grohl hämmert auf sein Schlagzeug, als ginge es um sein Leben, und Krist Novoselic trägt das Ganze mit seiner tiefen, hypnotischen Bassline. Gleich zu Beginn gibt Nirvana mit dem Coversong „Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for a Sunbeam“ der schottischen Alternative-Band The Vaselines, den Ton an: Es wird wild! Die Spannung steigt weiter und gipfelt in die Generationshymne „Smells Like Teen Spirit“, die das Publikum frenetisch mitschreit.

Based on real-life events and people, Buena Vista Social Club features many characters and lots of great Cuban music. It takes such skill to reflect music of a bygone era, even more to sound fresh and vibrant night after night for months at a time. Scaled down for the Tiny Desk, the show is no less magical.

Before it was a Broadway musical racking up Tony Award nominations, the Buena Vista Social Club was a second chance. After the Cuban Revolution, many of the country’s beloved musicians were lost to time, but in 1996, an ensemble was formed to reclaim their spotlight. To tell their story, the musical goes back and forth between the 1940s and the recording sessions that produced a masterpiece.

This set at the Tiny Desk is mostly culled from Lives Outgrown, her densely layered and lived-in album released last year. Sonically, Gibbons‘ solo debut feels worlds apart from the haunted electronic production of Portishead, yet her existential themes of loss, change and restless curiosity remain. There is, however, an invitation within these new songs to bear witness to Gibbons‘ own tragedy and transformation. In the daylight of the NPR Music office, she closes her eyes as she leans into the uncertainty of the moment, and turns away once a song ends.

Meredi (alias Ina Meredi Arakelian) ist eine deutsch-armenische Komponistin und Pianistin und beim renommierten Label Deutsche Grammophon unter Vertrag. Ihr Talent zeigt sich sowohl in ihren eigenen Werken als auch in Auftragsarbeiten für Film und Theater.

Jetzt kurz am kuratieren für einen im Sommer erscheinenden Mix, der mir ziemlich wichtig ist. Dabei eher am Rande auf die „Born Slippy“-Version gestoßen, die Underworld im Jahr 2016 auf dem Glastonbury zum Besten gegeben haben – und Alter(!) – was für eine scheinbar unendliche Energie dieser Tune immer noch hat. Und dieses schiere Glück, wenn die Chords reinfahren. Hach! Jetzt kochen.
