Itiner-e aims to host the most detailed open digital dataset of roads in the entire Roman Empire. The data creation is a collaborative ongoing project edited by a scholarly community. Itiner-e allows you to view, query and download roads.

Climate change and increasing urbanization are causing more and more heat, which is particularly noticeable these days. Locals and tourists are therefore looking for ways to avoid direct sunlight. Of course you can change sides of the road, but this is not always possible – and Google Maps doesn’t offer any help.

The “vampire routing” proof-of-concept, also known as “vampire mode”, solves this problem with a new type of technology. It suggests footpath routes that preferably run in the shade – just like vampires that avoid the sun at all costs. A small detour can also be accepted.

Pheasant Island ist eine unbewohnte Flussinsel mitten im Fluss Bidasoa und wird gemeinsam von Spanien und Frankreich kontrolliert, wobei beide Länder alle sechs Monate abwechselnd die administrative Kontrolle über die Insel haben. Damit ist Pheasant Island das kleinste Kondominium der Welt, ein politischer Begriff, der ein Gebiet bezeichnet, das von zwei Ländern gemeinsam kontrolliert wird. Obwohl die Insel bei Ebbe manchmal von der spanischen Seite aus zu Fuß erreicht werden kann, ist der Zugang verboten.

Manchmal stolpert man ja über so Sachen, über die man gemeinhin einfach gar nicht so nachdenkt. Heute zum Beispiel darüber, wieviele Binnenstaaten es gibt und wo diese liegen. Milde interessant Wikipedia dazu:

Als Binnenstaat wird ein Staat bezeichnet, der keine direkte Verbindung zum offenen Meer hat. Weltweit gibt es 44 Binnenstaaten.
Unter den Binnenstaaten sind zwei Staaten, Liechtenstein und Usbekistan, ausschließlich von weiteren Binnenstaaten umgeben und somit doppelte Binnenstaaten. Drei Binnenstaaten, Lesotho, San Marino und Vatikanstadt, sind jeweils von einem einzigen Nachbarstaat umgeben (Enklave) und sieben Staaten, Andorra, Bhutan, Eswatini, Liechtenstein, Moldau, die Mongolei und Nepal, liegen jeweils zwischen genau zwei Nachbarstaaten.

Der flächenmäßig größte Binnenstaat ist Kasachstan. About the Sunken Ships of the Second World War

This dashboard maps out the locations of more than 15,227 ships that were sunk during the Second World War as a result of self-inflicted or enemy action (i.e. not included are ships sunk as a result of natural disasters or accidents). Data on another 4,787 ships was also collected but these are not mapped because of the lack of location data.

Location data may not be exact. This information is sometimes a generalized location (e.g. 50W, 42N) or a best guess. There are undoubtedly errors in the data.

Ich habe mir über die Jahre angewöhnt, dass wenn ich in der Welt unterwegs bin, immer auf Wikipedia über die Orte zu lesen, in denen ich mich dann aufhalte. Man will ja wissen, mit wem man es zu tun hat. Klar. Da passt mir NearbyWiki sehr gut rein. Das nämlich ruft standortrelevante Wikipedia-Einträge ab, platziert sie auf einer Karte und zeigt interessante Fakten über die jeweilige Nachbarschaft, wie nahegelegene Sehenswürdigkeiten, Gebäude, bedeutende historische Ereignisse und so.

We are collecting the sounds of woodlands and forests from all around the world, creating a growing soundmap bringing together aural tones and textures from the world’s woodlands.

The sounds form an open source library, to be used by anyone to listen to and create from. Selected artists will be responding to the sounds that are gathered, creating music, audio, artwork or something else incredible, to be presented at Timber Festival 2021.

In the first half of the fourteenth century, London was a bustling metropolis. The population of 80-100,000 people mostly lived within the City Walls, with 7 main gates, 25 wards, and about 110 parishes. Along the Thames, the wharfs and markets saw merchants from Flanders and the Hanse Cities, and the area around Poultry and Bank was home to a large financial industry with bankers from Florence and elsewhere. Markets around Bishopsgate, along Cheapside offered fish, meat, milk, bread and other daily goods. London was also famous for its luxury goods, especially gold, clothes, shoes, spices, weapons and jewellery. Powerful guilds such as the tailors, fishmongers, bakers, and cordwainers dominated local politics, controlled prices, and gave a sense of identity to young people as apprentices. Religious houses were scattered across the city, and St Paul’s Cathedral with its massive spire dominated the skyline.

London coroners’ rolls have survived for nine years between 1300 and 1340. The texts report the findings of the investigative jury. They were summoned when a suspicious, sudden and violent death had occurred. Although the details vary, the summary would usually specify where and when the homicide happened, who was involved, what triggered the event, what weapons were used, and what the nature and dimensions of the wound were.

Der aktuelle, offizielle Linienplan der Schienenverbindungen von Berlin ist 27 Jahre alt, mittlerweile etwas unübersichtlich und auch nicht sonderlich schön. Der Designer Pasha Omelekhin hat sich daran gemacht, den Plan neu und angemessen zu gestalten, was ihm wirklich außerordentlich gut gelungen ist. Und mir war nicht klar, dass die Ringbahn in Berlin in Form eines Hundekopfes im Kreis fährt. Dieser ist hier wieder deutlich zu erkennen. Die Geschichte der Kartierung des Berliner Liniennetzes und seine Vorgehensweise erklärt Pasha ausführlich auf Berlin Transit Map. Das hier ist seine aktuelle Karte:

The previous transit map was designed 27 years ago. Since that time, quite a lot of stations have appeared, and the map has got out of style and become too complicated. Nearly three million people a day use Berlin commuter rail and U-Bahn (subway), one can’t just put a blind eye on it. It is obvious that the map needs updating.

The lines are drawn in a way that allows to find the required station and build a route as easy as possible. Owing to large rounded angles and small quantity of turns, eyes can easier monitor the route.
