This is a mushroom playing in the wild in some woods near Glossop in Manchester. The attached sensors measure bio-electrical fluctuations in the mushroom. The fluctuations are converted into signals that control the robotic arms. The keyboard playing a synth in Ableton Live.

Our art reveals the hidden world of nature. Plants and fungi are often overlooked, but they’re not so different from us. Scientists have found they can communicate with each other, remember things, and solve problems.

We are very proud to say that this video was featured by Nature magazine in Sept 2025.

The soundscape is built around real-time generative bird songs. I connected the Orbita to four independent Hachijo Tape Manipulators, each generating the sound of a different artificial bird through an analog tape delay (Roland Space Echo).

The signal from the Space Echo runs through a Marantz loudspeaker and is captured by two Oktava mics, alongside other creature sounds pre-recorded on cassettes.

Each circle on the Orbita controls its own bird, while different colors trigger different parts of a bird reel inside the tape manipulator with some amount of randomness.

The entire soundscape was recorded on tape.

Benoit Carré alias Skygge hat schon die Beatles mit Künstlicher Intelligenz „verschmolzen“. 2018 veröffentlichte der Komponist und Songwriter das erste KI-Musikalbum weltweit. Mit Maschinen eins zu werden, davon träumte er schon als Kind. Für den Song „Océan Noir“ verwandelt er eine Schubert-Fuge, eine brasilianische Trommel und die Klon-Stimme von Grimes per KI zu einem magischen Sound.

This is a sound collage recorded on tape, but not quite what my Nagra was tuned for—LGR50 instead of BASF911.

It’s a mixture of various artificial and generative birds, a distant beach among redwoods, a sunny meadow in rural Portugal, a night atmosphere, and other natural sounds.

Each tape features a 45-minute generative piece, all created with my own M4L devices.

I found old computer tapes from my wife’s grandfather. He used these tapes to calculate area, lenghts, prices … in houses construction mid / late 70’s. That was the time of computers using magnetic tapes to store informations. I was curious to listent to the sound of data, and if it was possible to make music with it.

When I found an old cassette with some recordings of my grandmother playing the piano, this was first an emotional moment. Few months later, I thought I might create music using some parts of her recordings. Of course and first, I made a tape loop, then thanks to a new piece of gear, the Arturia Microfreak and it’s Sample function added to the V5 firmware, I was able to sample a note from her piano recording and to play with its original sound ….

Dass KI auch an Musik nicht vorgehen wird, dürfte allen klar sein, wobei Vorläufer davon gerade im Bereich der elektronischen Musikproduktion eh schon seit Jahren eingesetzt werden. Ich habe mich bisher damit, wo KI-generierte Musik gerade steht, noch nicht auseinandergesetzt, finde die hier gezeigten Demos, die mit Stable Audio entstanden sind, zumindest interessant. Und was da bei dem Prompt „Disco, Driving Drum Machine, Synthesizer, Bass, Piano, Guitars, Instrumental, Clubby, Euphoric, Chicago, New York, 115 BPM“ ausgegeben wird, gar nicht mal so übel. Auch Soundscapes aller Art lassen sich so generieren und da ist mitunter echt noch Luft nach oben, aber das ist sicher nur eine Sache der Zeit.

Das Mellotron ist ein elektromechanisches Tasteninstrument, das als analoge Urform des Samplers gilt. Es arbeitet mit 3/8 Zoll breiten, mit drei Spuren bespielten Tonbändern (Magnetbändern), auf denen individuelle Töne als aufgenommene Klänge von bestimmten Musikinstrumenten wie zum Beispiel Violine oder Trompete gespeichert sind. Jeder Taste ist dazu ein eigener Tonbandstreifen zugeordnet, der beim Druck auf die Taste über einen Tonkopf abgespielt wird. Wird die Taste losgelassen, wird das in einer Reihe von Bandkassetten befindliche Tonband über eine Feder schnell in seine Ausgangsposition zurückgezogen.
