Norman Smith has dedicated his life to protecting and relocating the snowy owls from Boston’s busiest airport runways. Called “the Owl Man of Logan Airport,” Smith has single-handedly relocated more than 900 snowy owls, creating the blueprint for how airports across the US and Canada can manage wildlife conflict.

“Nest departure sounds dangerous for young owls, but it might actually keep them safer than staying in the nest. The theory is that if a bear, Arctic Fox, or other predator raids the nest, it will easily eat the entire clutch of chicks. Once dispersed on the tundra, however, the chicks are well camouflaged and can spread out to hide from predators. Though they are certainly vulnerable to predators at this time, the chances of more chicks surviving an attack becomes greater…”

Der Kaninchenkauz lebt als Bodenbewohner vor allem in Halbwüsten und Steppengebieten. Er lebt in Bodenhöhlen, die entweder von Säugetieren stammen oder selbst gegraben werden. Die Wohnhöhle reicht dabei bis einen Meter unter die Erde und kann einen bis zu drei Meter langen, gewundenen Gang darstellen. Dabei bildet die Art lockere Kolonien von maximal 12 Brutpaaren. Die zwei bis elf Eier werden in die Brutkammer gelegt, die vorher grob ausgepolstert wurde. Die Brutzeit dauert etwa vier Wochen, in denen beide Partner abwechselnd brüten.

Tawny Owl Mum Luna is doing a great job looking after these rescue owl chicks. Her own three eggs failed to hatch, so when Robert received a call from a local farm to say they had found two 2 week old tawny owlets on the ground, he rushed to their help.

Lyndsay and her family have just moved into their new home and got a visit from this goggle-eyed bunch on their first night. The surprise was extra special for Lyndsay.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely LOVE owls, I have owl decor all over the inside of my home,” Lyndsay says. “These owls had so much personality! They were so wide-eyed peeking at the camera! One stole a bug the other had dropped and the third owl was a free spirit doing its own thing.”

This barn owl chick has never heard thunder before. At just two and a half months old the young owl is only just learning about the world when a deafening thunderstorm passes overhead. This owl only took its first flight two weeks before this moment and is still using the nest for shelter.
