Es gab damals von vielen Seiten Kritik, dass der Mann „ja gar kein echter Sammler“ sondern nur „jemand sei, der zu viel Geld und zu wenig Aufmerksamkeit hätte“. Was die Kritiker außer Acht ließen: Freitas kauft weltweit auch Platten ein, die es mitunter nur in kleinster Auflage und von längst vergessenen Künstlern gibt. Diese VÖs digitalisieren und im Netz zur Verfügung stellen zu wollen ist eine Mammutaufgabe, die zumindest ich ehrenwert finde. Womöglich kommt so auch Musik ins Netz, von der bisher nur ganz wenige Menschen Notiz nehmen konnten. Klasse!

“I’ve gone to therapy for 40 years to try to explain this to myself,” he said. His 25,000-square-foot warehouse in São Paolo contains several million albums. He’s been collecting since childhood and greatly expanded his collection after his divorce.

He currently employs a dozen college interns to catalog the records, but their 500-per-day rate is nearly surpassed by the new records he adds daily, using a network of buyers in New York, Mexico City, South Africa, Nigeria, Cairo, and beyond.

Keine Ahnung, warum, aber Rutherford Chang hat über Jahre hinweg 1000 Erstpressungen des weißen Albums der Beatles gesammelt und stellt diese jetzt mit sehr interessantem Konzept in Liverpool aus. Kann man sich nämlich auch alle dort anhören. Warum auch nicht?

The seminal White Album – officially titled The Beatles – was the band’s ninth studio album, with a revolutionary cover designed by pioneering pop artist Richard Hamilton. Famously stark, the totally white design has provided a blank canvas for the coffee stains, doodles, mold and rips that have accumulated on the albums since its release in 1968, making every copy now unique.

Chang’s entire collection of over 1,000 White Albums will be displayed in the format of a record store with two vital differences, only one album is displayed, and records are only bought not sold. Visitors will be invited to browse and listen to copies of their choice.

Also featured is a vinyl album Chang created by layering 100 different copies from his collection, exploring the sonic and visual differences between the aged vinyl discs and covers.

Chang has been building his collection for eight years and says:

“The character of each copy is distinctly shaped by their individual histories, so this collection of intentical yet unique mutiples together forms a story of the past half-Century. I hope to expand my collection while in Liverpool, so please bring me numbered copies in any condition!”

Schöne Idee, die DJ Shadow da mit Cut Chemist entwickelt hat. Die beiden werden ab dem 1. September in Nordamerika eine Tour spielen, auf der sie nur Platten aus dem Archiv von Afrika Bambaataa auf die sechs Plattenteller legen werden. Das sollte machbar sein, umfasst die Sammlung des HipHop-Urgesteins doch über 40.000 Vinyls.

„Turntable maestros DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist have announced that they will perform a vinyl-only tour in honor of Afrika Bambaataa’s hip-hop legacy and influence on the hip-hop genre. The „Renegades of Rhythm“ tour will kick off this fall, with one caveat: the only records spun will be those pulled from Afrika Bambaataa’s prodigious collection (there are 40,000 records currently housed in a permanent archive at Cornell University).“

Ein wundervolles Buchprojekt, welches der Plattenliebhaber und DJ Eilon Paz per Kickstarter zum Record Store Day im April umgesetzt hat. Auf 416 Seiten portraitiert er 130 Plattensammler, die in der ganzen Welt verteilt leben und ihrer Leidenschaft nachgehen. Mit wirklich sehr tollen Fotos und jenen Geschichten, die Plattensammler halt so zu erzählen haben. Die Idee zu diesem Buch liegt wohl in der gleichnamigen Website, die Paz seit Jahren mit Geschichten, Mixen und tollen Features über Vinyl-Nerds befüllt. Dort kann man schon mal ein paar Stunden verweilen.

Eilon Paz’s 416-page coffee-table book illuminates over 130 vinyl collectors and their collections in the most intimate of environments—their record rooms. With a foreword by the RZA, compelling photographic essays are paired with in-depth interviews to illustrate what motivates record collectors to keep digging for more records.

Readers get an up close and personal look at a variety of well-known vinyl champions as well as a glimpse into the collections of known and unknown DJs, producers, record dealers, and everyday enthusiasts. The book is divided into two main parts: the first features 250 full-page photos framed by captions and select quotes, while the second consists of 12 full-length interviews that delve deeper into collectors’ personal histories and vinyl troves.

Eine us-amerikanische Bibliothekarin hört sich durch die Plattensammlung ihres Mannes und füllt mit den Kritiken darüber das Tumblr My Husband’s Stupid Record Collection. Viele der über 1500 Platten hat sie vorher nie gehört – manche der Bands sind ihr gänzlich unbekannt. So kann sie da relativ unvoreingenommen rangehen. Das ganze wird in alphabetischer Reihenfolge abgehandelt, wobei sie immer noch beim A ist. Da ist also noch ganz viel Raum für all seine Platten.

“This project was my idea, inspired by maybe one too many glasses of wine last weekend, when I was in charge of changing the music,” she explains. “‘I can’t believe there are so many records here that I have never listened to. I should try to listen to all of them. And then write about it.’ So here we are.”
