Ähnliches aber sehr viel größeres hat jetzt in San Francisco stattgefunden. Dort hatte in den 1960er Jahren ein/e offenbar talentierte/r Fotograf:in um die 8000 Fotos des damals stattfindendem gesellschaftlichen Umbruchs gemacht, die allerdings nie entwickelt wurden. Vergessen in irgendwelchen Containern sind die Filme erst jetzt aufgetaucht und konnten entwickelt werden. Von wem damals gemacht wurden ist gänzlich unbekannt. Ein Fotograf hat sich der außergewöhnlichen Sammlung angenommen. Was für ein Schatz – viel wichtiger als Gold.

A group in San Francisco is going around placing cones on Waymo and Cruise autonomous cars. Placing cones on them disables the car and forces it to stop. The group doing this is called Safe Street Rebels. Members are known for advocating for pedestrian safety and public transit usage.

Viele solcher Bauten in San Francisco wurden durch das Erdbeben von 1906 und den dadurch ausgelösten Brand zerstört. Etliche blieben jedoch erhalten, wurden zwischenzeitlich restauriert und farbenfroh bemalt. Sie gelten als besondere Sehenswürdigkeit der Stadt.

Der Begriff „Painted Ladies“ ist ein Slang-Begriff aus dem 19. Jahrhundert und steht für Prostituierte, da sich Damen der Gesellschaft damals normalerweise nicht auffällig schminkten.

Architectural Digest hat eines dieser Häuser ausfindig gemacht, das leer steht und sich darin mal umgesehen.

Ich habe neulich am Rande irgendwo gelesen, dass der Diebstahl von Katalysatoren aus den auf Straßen rumstehender Autos nicht nur in den USA ein Ding ist und dachte so: „Schön blöd, willste morgens dein Auto starten, fehlt der Kat.“

In San Francisco haben Diebe jetzt Katalysatoren von Polizeiautos geklaut, die dabei vor einem Polizeipräsidium standen.

„On September 12, 2022 at approximately 1 p.m., a San Francisco Police Officer discovered a marked police truck parked in the area of 16th Street and De Haro Street had its catalytic converter stolen,“ confirmed the SFPD media relations department. „The officer inspected other police vehicles, and discovered that another marked police truck and two marked police vans also had their catalytic converters stolen.“ […]

„The people engaging in this activity really don’t think much of the police if they think they can steal catalytic converters from the best of us,“ said an SFPD higher-up.

Schönes Zeitdokument von 8ØHÐ, der eine Field recording Aufnahme aus dem Jahr 1987 in die Cloud geladen hat, die wohl 1987 in der San Francisco Bay entstanden ist. Die Brandung der Bay und vier separate Nebelhörner. Direkt mal in meinen Samples-Ordner geschoben. Weil: so schon fast eine perfekte Ambient-Nummer. Bisschen Hall und bisschen Delay noch drüber vielleicht. Mega.

In the late ’80s, my dad recorded the foghorns of San Francisco on tape for my mother. Many of the foghorns in San Francisco Bay can never be heard again as they have been replaced by more advanced technology. (Please read on)

Here is what my dad has to say:

This recording was made late in the evening on the foggy night of August 29th, 1987 from
Lands End near Lincoln Park in San Francisco, using fairly inexpensive stereo equipment. The coordinates are approximately N 37 degrees 47′ 14″; W 122 degrees 29′ 40.5″. Years later I converted the recording to digital for posterity. There are four separate fog horns audible, each with specific characteristics such as direction, intervals and frequencies; two are single, two are double. I believe two of these are located on the nearby Golden Gate Bridge itself and another may be at Point Bonita on the Marin Headlands, 2.5 miles west of the bridge. Also audible is the surf below the cliffs of Lands End. At about 1:08:00
into the recording a small plane can be heard flying overhead.

In 1938, the hotel St. Francis in San Francisco began washing all its coins as a courtesy to guests -particularly women who wore white gloves. Back then, it was a full-time job, since coins could pay for about anything. Now Rob Holsen continues the custom, but almost 80 years later, it only takes about ten hours a week, because people don’t use coins as much. Still, the hotel has the cleanest coins anywhere.

Nick Steinberg, Fotograf aus San Francisco hat in den letzten Jahren absolut beeindruckende Bilder von Nebelschwaden gemacht, die über San Francisco hinwegziehen. Dafür hat er, so sagt er, nie Photoshop, sondern einzig seine Kamera bemühen müssen.

Recently in my studies of the area I have discovered something amazing! During the summer months, when the fog is created from high amounts of inland heat, it gets too high to shoot in the bay area (including the Golden Gate Bridge) as it is usually above 1,000′ and the bridge sits at 746′. In addition, since it is coming from the Pacific ocean, the coastline is pretty much unshootable. So the only option is to hit up the high vantage points, one of the best being Mt. Tamalpais, which sits at 2,572′. Mt. Tam allows you to get, “above it all” and is literally heaven on earth as you feel on top of the world or almost on an airplane looking down on clouds. What I discovered from hundreds of trips up there is, when the fog rolls through and is at the perfect height and density, it will create wave-like movements as it contours the land. This is where I coined the term “Fog Waves” as it literally looks like waves that resemble the ocean.
