Heute lernte ich: die Kola-Bohrung, kurz auch Kola SG-3 (СГ-3) oder KSDB (von englisch Kola Superdeep Borehole), ist eine von 1970 bis 1992 zu wissenschaftlichen Zwecken durchgeführte ultratiefe geologische Bohrung auf der russischen Halbinsel Kola, etwa zehn Kilometer südwestlich der Kleinstadt Sapoljarny. Sie erreichte 12.262 Meter Tiefe und ist damit seit 1979 die tiefste Bohrung der Welt. Zudem besaß sie bis 2008 auch das längste Bohrloch. Sie ist des Weiteren die einzige übertiefe Bohrung in einen stabilen Kraton bzw. Kontinentalschild. Die Kola-Bohrung war die erste von insgesamt 11 geplanten übertiefen Bohrungen eines ambitionierten staatlichen Forschungsprogramms der Sowjetunion. Seit 2012 ist der Bohrlochkopf versiegelt und gammelt vor sich hin.

Es ist anscheinend gelungen, Mäusen bis zu sieben Gene einzupflanzen, die nicht nur bei den ausgestorbenen Riesen, sondern jetzt auch bei den Nagern für ein langes und dichtes Fell sorgen. Das ist ein wichtiger Fortschritt, um irgendwann tatsächlich eine Art von Wollhaarmammut wiederzuerschaffen.

Vetulicolia bezeichnet einen ausgestorbenen Tierstamm, der 2001 von Shu u. a. erstellt wurde; er umfasst mehrere unterkambrische Fossilformen. Die taxonomische Zuordnung der Vetulicolia ist nach derzeitigem Stand der Wissenschaft (2008) umstritten. D.G. Shu et al. sprechen sich dafür aus, dass es sich bei diesen Tieren um frühe Neumünder (Deuterostomia) handelt. Ihr Bauplan besteht aus zwei Teilen: einem voluminösen Vorderteil mit großem „Mund“, dem beidseitig eine Reihe von fünf runden bis ovalen Öffnungen folgt – möglicherweise handelt es sich hierbei um Kiemenspalten oder um in der Nähe des Pharynx gelegene Atemlöcher – und einem aus sieben Segmenten bestehenden Hinterteil. Der zwischen Vorder- und Hinterteil liegende Abschnitt ist verengt. Laut Shu u. a. umfasst der Stamm Vetulicolia die Familie Didazoonidae mit den Gattungen Didazoon und Xidazoon, die Familie Vetulicolidae mit den Gattungen Pomatrum und Vetulicola sowie die Gattung Banffia. Die Autoren vertreten überdies die Ansicht, dass der Stamm der Vetulicolia eng mit dem der Yunnanozoa verwandt ist.

Ich schrieb hier ja schon oft, dass Wackelaugen einfach alles besser machen, dass sie aber laut einer Studie auch dazu taugen, Lebensmitttelverschwendung eindämmen zu können, kommt unerwartet. Allerdings macht es Wackelaugen noch mal sehr viel besser.

Kacy Kim, außerordentliche Professorin an der Bryant University, veröffentlichte kürzlich in der Zeitschrift „Psychology & Marketing“ eine Studie mit einer bezaubernden Lösung für das Problem der Lebensmittelverschwendung durch Wackelaugen. Blöd halt nur: die Dinger sorgen dann halt auch wieder für mehr Plastikmüll.

Kim’s team argues that the problem is that supermarkets, and even „ugly“ food specialty companies, are going about it all wrong. It’s not about discounting irregular produce to try and get people to buy it, it’s about making that produce appealing enough that it doesn’t need to be discounted in the first place. That’s where the googly eyes come in.

„By testing and adding some human characteristics, we examine whether that effort will increase the attractiveness of the produce, and [whether] that attractiveness is going to be increasing the purchasing of the produce and consuming of the produce,“ said Kim.

To produce sound, a rib that lies next to the swim bladder is moved by a special muscle into a piece of cartilage. When the rib is released it hits the swim bladder and makes the drumming sound. The rib is much harder in males, which explains why females do not produce sounds.

The scientists have not established why the fish make such loud sounds but suggested it could help navigate murky waters or be an aggressive tactic used by males to warn off competition.

Last night the city of Leiden was a remarkable experiment: Seeing Stars Leiden. In the wide vicinity of the Leiden Observatory, all the lights were turned off by thousands of citizens. Although it was cloudy, we suddenly saw Saturn and other stars in the historical streets of Leiden. It was so mysterious to walk with so many people in a dark city. As part of the Leiden European City of Science 2022 we brought back the stars to create a new sense of community.

At a time of biodiversity loss, climate crisis, and energy crisis (even the Eiffel Tower in Paris is being switched off) we show the beauty of less, together. All citizens, entrepreneurs and the government were involved in switching off the lights, which is extremely moving to see happening. We can reveal magic together. Erst sehr viel später erkannte man, dass die schädliche Effekte von Radium als radioaktiven Element seine visuellen Vorzüge überwogen.
