The sound of dial-up at some of the most common speeds, including 300, 1200, 2400, 9600, 14,400, 33,600, and 56K. As noted in the video, the sound of a V.34 connection at either 28,800 and 33,600 will be the same, and both were common around the same time, so I’ve only included the 33,600 connection.

Note that this isn’t intended to be an exhaustive list of all speeds, but a sample of the most common ones. There are many other speeds and protocols, including but not limited to 75, 110, 4800, 28,800, etc. Also note that this video includes a V.90 56K negotiation, which is the one that people are most likely to find familiar. With that said, if it doesn’t sound quite right, remember that V.90 deprecated the X2 and Flex 56K standards, which sound quite different.

Die BBC hat ihre Soundeffekt-Bibliothek auf nicht weniger als 33.000 Samples aufgestockt, die dort jetzt zum kostenlosen Download bereitstehen.

Indexed into categories, the sounds span everything from footsteps and transport to nature and machines. Among the plethora of sounds covered are reindeer grunts, rain, clocks, horses walking in mud, common frog calls and crowds at the 1989 FA Cup Final. And that barely scratches the surface.

The sounds have been released under a non-commercial use license (a RemArc License) as part of the BBC’s RemArc programme, which is “designed to help trigger memories in people with dementia using BBC Archive material as stimulation“.

A RemArc License stipulates that the samples can only be used for research, educational or personal projects, and therefore can’t be legally sampled in music that is then sold.

Weil es irgendwer ja machen muss, sammelt Obsolete Sounds ausgestorbene und verschwindende Klänge und will so die weltweit größte Sammlung dafür werden, die jene Sounds ins heute zu bringen versucht. Herrlich nostalgisches Klickmaterial.

Obsolete Sounds is the biggest ever collection of the obsolete and disappearing sounds of the world, covering everything from dusty VHS cassettes, vintage video games and old mobile phones to melting glacier ice and endangered traditional songcraft.

The interactive online exhibition features more than 150 obsolete and endangered sounds and can be explored in full at Obsolete Sounds.

The project documents not just the much-missed sounds that evoke memories from the past, but also highlights some that we’re in danger of losing. It aims to draw attention to the world’s disappearing soundscapes, and what we can do to preserve and save socially and culturally important sounds for future generations.

Launched in 2013, ESA’s trio of Swarm satellites are being used to understand exactly how our magnetic field is generated by measuring precisely the magnetic signals that stem not only from Earth’s core, but also from the mantle, crust and oceans, as well as from the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Swarm is also leading to new insights into weather in space.

Musician and project supporter Klaus Nielsen, from the Technical University of Denmark, explains, „The team used data from ESA’s Swarm satellites, as well as other sources, and used these magnetic signals to manipulate and control a sonic representation of the core field. The project has certainly been a rewarding exercise in bringing art and science together.“

It might sound like the stuff of nightmares, but, remarkably, this audio clip represents the magnetic field generated by Earth’s core and a solar storm.

NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover carries two microphones which are directly recording sounds on the Red Planet, including the Ingenuity helicopter and the rover itself at work. For the very first time, these audio recordings offer a new way to experience the planet.

Earth and Mars have different atmospheres, which affects the way sound is heard. Justin Maki, a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Nina Lanza, a scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, explain some of the notable audio recorded on Mars in this video.

The HP 3782A Error Detector used with a HP 3781A Pattern Generator forms a flexible, high-performance error measuring system for digital transmission equipment in the CEPT digital hierarchy. They provide 2, 8, and 34 Mb/s interfaces and binary ECL operation up to 50 Mb/s. Automated or remote measurement capability with HP-IB. Measurements can be made on all types of digital transmission systems including cable, digital radio, satellite, and lightwave. The pattern generator provides a wide range of test patterns including PRBS for simulating live traffic and shorter WORD patterns for checking pattern sensitivity in transmission equipment. Binary and code error injection capability is included for stress-testing line terminating equipment. A jitter modulation input is provided to add controlled amounts of jitter to the output test pattern and perform jitter tolerance tests on equipment interfaces.

Hainbach hat aus diesem Teil jetzt Sound geholt und das Gerät „The Saddest Drone Machine“ genannt. Klang aus Geräten, die nicht dafür gebaut wurden, Klang zu erzeugen. Mag ich sehr.

Listen to Martian wind blow across NASA’s InSight lander. The spacecraft’s seismometer and air pressure sensor picked up vibrations from 10-15 mph (16-24 kph) winds as they blew across Mars’ Elysium Planitia on Dec. 1, 2018.

The seismometer readings are in the range of human hearing, but are nearly all bass and difficult to hear on laptop speakers and mobile devices. We provide the original audio and a version pitched up by two octaves to make them audible on mobile devices. Playback is suggested on a sound system with a subwoofer or through headphones. Readings from the air pressure sensor have been sped up by a factor of 100 times to make them audible. For full-length uncompressed .wav files, visit NASA.gov/sounds.

Sehr geile Projektidee, die es sich zum Ziel gemacht hat, die Geräusche mitunter längst vergessener Geräte zu bewahren: Conserve the Sound. Wer derartiges mag und heute noch was vorhat, sollte da nicht hinklicken.

“Conserve the sound” ist ein Online-Archiv für verschwindende Geräusche.
Die Geräusche eines Wählscheibentelefons, eines Walkmans, einer analogen Schreibmaschine, eines Münztelefons, eines 56k-Modems, eines Atomkraftwerks oder sogar einer Handytastatur sind teilweise schon verschwunden oder verschwinden gerade aus dem täglichen Leben. Begleitend kommen Menschen
in Text- und Videointerviews zu Wort und vertiefen den Blick in die Welt der verschwindenden Geräusche.

“Conserve the sound” ist ein Projekt von CHUNDERKSEN und wird von der
Film & Medienstiftung NRW gefördert.

Falls davon mal wer was gebrauchen kann, was so ausgeschlossen jetzt ja nicht ist: Die BBC stellt bei BBC Sound Effects 16,016 BBC Sounds zum Wav-Download und unter RemArc Licence zur Verfügung. Da sind nicht wenige Sachen bei, die sich als Sample-Futter eignen und fast darum bitten, dafür auch genutzt zu werden. Passt zwar dann nicht mehr zu der Lizenz, aber das muss nach dem Gebrauch ja keiner mehr merken.
