Ein Co-op-Supermarkt in Sheffield sorgt ob seiner „wohlig“ klingenden Tiefkühltruhen regional aktuell für etwas Aufsehen. Die klingen in der Summe nämlich tatsächlich nach warmen Ambientsounds und auf reddit fragt man sich, ob das wohl so gewollt sein könnte. Alim Kheraj, der in der Nähe wohnt, war für den Guardian mal da und hat sich das genauer angehört. Vielleicht hat Warp ja Interesse einem Release…

I headed to the back of the shop and to a cluster of three freezers. This was it. The sound they were making was an unbelievable symphonic hum. I stood entranced; it was like listening to an orchestra playing underwater. I whipped out my phone and recorded.

For each drone video, he assigns musical notes to the cars and trucks in specific lanes. “16 lanes in today, which depending on the frequency might be at the upper limit. Piano doing the bottom 12 lanes. SEM synth doing the top 4,” he notes. As they cross the center line, their unpredictable positions create rhythms that form the soundscapes.

When you look at this gigantic mass of ice, it’s hard to get a personal relationship to it. So we wanted to document this landscape to give us an idea of what it sounds like inside a glacier. There is also the sadness because you know that all these sounds are disappearing right now. Of course, melting is something natural for glaciers, but the problem is that nothing new is coming back.

Within the context of the Superblock programme, green hubs reclaim part of the space currently used up by private vehicles in order to benefit citizens. They constitute a healthy public space where the city is amenable; one that is conducive to social interaction and fosters the local economy. Citizens can enjoy relaxation, water, brightness and greenery, all within easy reach.

The project revamps the original vision from Ildefons Cerdà. Starting with the regeneration of the network of streets, four green hubs have been created with their respective squares where they meet. The project is formed by a total of 21 hubs. Decarbonisation and renaturalisation of the urban landscape places people at the heart of the programme and champions sustainable mobility. A turning point with a crosscutting perspective: one involving urban development centring on ecosystems.

Die BBC hat ihre Soundeffekt-Bibliothek auf nicht weniger als 33.000 Samples aufgestockt, die dort jetzt zum kostenlosen Download bereitstehen.

Indexed into categories, the sounds span everything from footsteps and transport to nature and machines. Among the plethora of sounds covered are reindeer grunts, rain, clocks, horses walking in mud, common frog calls and crowds at the 1989 FA Cup Final. And that barely scratches the surface.

The sounds have been released under a non-commercial use license (a RemArc License) as part of the BBC’s RemArc programme, which is “designed to help trigger memories in people with dementia using BBC Archive material as stimulation“.

A RemArc License stipulates that the samples can only be used for research, educational or personal projects, and therefore can’t be legally sampled in music that is then sold.

That’s something which – I learned a trick from Lee Scratch Perry, who I worked with in Switzerland about 10 years ago. He’s the pioneer of dub reggae, which must be the genre of music with the most bass. And one of the tricks that he used was to record a bass line and then to play it back through a huge speaker in a room that’s resonant…and record that. So it enhances the resonance of the bass. You also hear something of the shaking of the room. So that was one of the tricks that we used to give a sort of a very tactile sense to this spiritual adventure that Paul’s going on.

Das Wort setzt sich zusammen aus dem lateinischen Wort „Pluvial“ für „Regen“ und der altgriechischen Endung “Philia” für Freunschaft, Liebe oder Zuneigung. Pluviophil ist, wer Regen liebt und an regnerischen Tagen gut drauf ist. Sowas gibt es? Oh ja! Zwischen Sommer- und Wintermenschen gibt es tatsächlich noch eine weitere Spezies: die Pluviophilen.

Ich mag den Regen an sich ja nicht sonderlich, aber das Geräusch, das er macht. Wem es genauso geht, kann sich bei Pluvior im Browser die Geräusche von Regen, Wind und Gewitter zusammenmischen.

Ambient.garden lässt uns im Browser durch einen Park schlendern, in dem es an Bäumen und Sträuchern ambiente Soundscapes „zu pflücken“ gibt. Ich bin mal eben spazieren.

ambient.garden is an experiment that started with the question: can a composition be organized in space rather than time? Can it be experienced in space by the listener? To explore this concept, all the sounds and graphics were entirely generated from open source code. The sounds of ambient.garden were assembled and grown into a music album, A Walk Through the Ambient Garden, also open source.

Moodist ist eine kleine hübsche Browserspielerei, in der sich etliche Umgebungsgeräusche für die Stimmung zusammenklicken lassen. Mag ja so was sehr.

We are collecting the sounds of woodlands and forests from all around the world, creating a growing soundmap bringing together aural tones and textures from the world’s woodlands.

The sounds form an open source library, to be used by anyone to listen to and create from. Selected artists will be responding to the sounds that are gathered, creating music, audio, artwork or something else incredible, to be presented at Timber Festival 2021.

The Woods of Despair, they called it. The name itself gave me chills, but I decided to go anyway. „It’s just a superstition,“ I was telling myself. It was a direct way to my destination and I didn’t want to lose any more time.
I regretted my decision the next morning when I was entering the forest. There was something unsettling about it.

Später bin ich irgendwie auf einem 12 Stunden langen Loop gelandet, der nichts geringeres als Meeresrauschen spielt. Mir war nicht bewusst, dass ich den dann angemacht habe, aber dachte nach vier Stunden, dass es schon irgendwie komisch ist, dass LoFi-Girl heute irgendwie so klang, als würde ich es am Strand hören. Es lief halt beides, ohne das ich dafür gesorgt hätte. Und irgendwie hat das in der Summe dann alles kurz ein bisschen besser gemacht. Aber wird schon wieder. Hoffentlich. Wurde es irgendwie ja immer.

Und jetzt klickt halt auf beide Video gleichzeitig (mobil halt doof, aber die meisten von euch lesen den Bums hier eh am Rechner, da geht das), um zu wissen, was ich meine. Oder macht’s halt nicht. Was weiß ich denn.

Since 2003, the black hole at the center of the Perseus galaxy cluster has been associated with sound. This is because astronomers discovered that pressure waves sent out by the black hole caused ripples in the cluster’s hot gas that could be translated into a note – one that humans cannot hear some 57 octaves below middle C. Now a new sonification brings more notes to this black hole sound machine. This new sonification – that is, the translation of astronomical data into sound – is being released for NASA’s Black Hole Week this year.

Some objects, like paper bags, ice cubes, and pool balls, make an unexpected amount of noise. This can be a big problem on set, as any of these unwanted sounds can get in the way of dialogue. To ensure the sound team gets the best sound possible, the prop team will create silent versions of real products. Prop master Scott Reeder replaced loud pool balls with much quieter painted racquetballs for bar scenes in shows like „Friday Night Lights.“ Meanwhile, Tim Schultz of Prop TRX uses vinyl and fabric to make quieter versions of grocery bags, sandwich bags, and cellophane, as seen on „Entourage,“ „Mike & Molly,“ and „The Kominsky Method.“ Reeder and Schultz showed us how they found quiet alternatives to some of the loudest props out there.
