Oscar Emmanuel Peterson war ein kanadischer Jazz-Pianist und -Komponist. Duke Ellington nannte ihn den „Maharaja der Tasten“. Er veröffentlichte über 200 Aufnahmen, gewann sieben Grammys und zahlreiche weitere Auszeichnungen in seiner Karriere. Er wird als einer der erfolgreichsten Jazz-Pianisten aller Zeiten angesehen. In seiner 65-jährigen Karriere spielte er auf Tausenden Konzerten. Hier jamt er ein wenig auf elektronischen Instrumenten im Studio.

Neue Episode von Vox‘ Earworm, die sich dem ganz typischen Sound der 1980er Jahre widmet. Im Fokus: das gated Reverb.

But there’s one sound that will always be timestamped to the 1980s and people just love to hate it. It’s called gated reverb.

Over the past few years, a general nostalgia for the ’80s has infiltrated music, film, and television. In pop music, producers have enthusiastically applied gated reverb to drums to create that punchy percussive sound — used by every artist from Phil Collins to Prince — to pay homage to their favorite artists of the 1980s.

I unapologetically love gated reverb, and so for my second episode of Vox Pop’s Earworm I spoke with two Berklee College of Music professors, Susan Rogers and Prince Charles Alexander, to figure out just how that sound came to be, what makes it so damn punchy, and why it’s back.

Mein Isländisch ist schlecht, oder um ehrlich zu sein: gänzlich nicht vorhanden. Also vermute ich bei diesem Video einfach mal, dass diese Frau Björk fragt, ob all diese kleinen Geräte da ihr „Home Studio“ sein sollen. Und sie antwortet (vielleicht und hoffentlich): ja, so mache ich hier halt Musik. So, wie so viele andere damals, Mitte der 90er Jahre. Und damit groß wurden.

Dubtechno Pionier und Basic Channel Mitbegründer Moritz von Oswald lässt auf eBay gerade seinen schon leicht in die Jahre gekommenen Studio Mixer verkaufen. Besser gesagt eine Mixer-Konsole, die auf dem Speck Electronics SSM-24 basiert, und um weitere Speck-Module erweitert wurde. Mit EUR 17.500,00 ist das kein Schnäppchen, aber Qualität hat ja bekanntlich ihren Preis. Außerdem hat die Kiste Geschichte.

FACT hat für seine Against the Clock-Reihe schon im letzten Jahr, in der diverse Produzenten 10 Minuten Zeit haben, einen Track zu bauen, keinen Geringeren als Mathew Jonson vor die Kamera geholt. Und wo bei vielen anderen Producern heute nur noch ein Mac und ein Midi-Controller steht, parkt Jonson seinen Synthesizer-Fuhrpark, mit dem er, natürlich auch optimal umzugehen weiß.

Studio Ghibli (jap. 株式会社スタジオジブリ, Kabushiki-gaisha Sutajio Jiburi) ist ein japanisches Zeichentrickfilmstudio. Bekannte Anime-Produktionen des Studios sind zum Beispiel Prinzessin Mononoke, Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland und Das wandelnde Schloss.

Und das so kurz vor Weihnachten. Ich will die mit Totoro! Gibt es hier.

Neue Ausgabe von FACTs „Against The Clock„. Diesmal an seiner DAW, basierend auf Live: Fracture. Der geht kurz vorher in London noch second Hand ein paar Platten shoppen und setzt sich mit den Samples von dieses zehn Minuten hin und macht eben den gewünschten Beat. Und der ist dann – natürlich – auch ziemlich hörbar.

I went speed record shopping at Eldica with FACT Magazine and bought a few records which they then gave me 10 minutes to make a track out of while filming it. It seemed like a great idea until I actually sat down to do it and the clock was ticking. My heart rate is rising just thinking about it…
