Fantastische Fotografie von Jason Weingart.

In this amazing photomontage we get to see the evolution of a tornado that formed north of Minneola, Kansas on May 24, 2016. The photo is a composite of eight images shot in two sequences. According to photographer Jason Weingart, this prolific supercell went on to produce at least 12 tornadoes and at times had two and even three tornadoes on the ground at once.

This image was most recently awarded first place in the Wikimedia Commons 2018 Picture of the Year. The image was also a Jury’s Choice award winner in the 2017 Wiki Science Competition in the United States.

Chad Cowan ist ausgezogen, um Superzellen und die damit einhergehenden Unwetter in 4K zu filmen. Und so mächtig wie die Natur dabei auch sein mag, sieht sie dennoch wunderschön aus.

This collection of timelapses was gathered over the last six years. The project started out as wanting to be able to see the life-cycles of these storms, just for my own enjoyment and to increase my understanding of them. Over time, it morphed into an obsession with wanting to document as many photogenic supercells as I could, in as high a resolution as possible, as to be able to share with those who couldn’t see first hand the majestic beauty that comes alive in the skies above America’s Great Plains every Spring. After more than 100,000 miles on the road and tens of thousands of shutter clicks later, this is the result. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

An amazing stationary supercell was produced over the Black Hills of South Dakota near Rapid City on June 1, 2015. I was fortunate enough to have the entire event unfold right in front of me over the course of several hours. Truly one of the most beautiful natural weather phenomenon I have ever witnessed.

Around 2:00pm MDT supercells began developing in a band across beginning in central Colorado and extending eastward into eastern Colorado by around 4pm. A cell near Lamar, CO became tornadic ~4:30pm MDT and produced a photogenic elephant trunk tornado with rainbow in foreground near Eads, CO. The storm later produced several times before crossing the cold front north of Cheyenne Wells, CO. Several tornadoes were also intercepted after dark in western KS near Oakley around 9pm CDT.

Bei Superzellen handelt es sich eigentlich um Einzelzellen, die aber durch ihren hohen Grad an organisierter Struktur ausgezeichnet sind. Sie können auch in einem Zell-Cluster oder einer Böenlinie eingebettet sein.

Wesentliches Merkmal einer Superzelle ist eine hochreichende persistente Rotation des Aufwindbereiches, die so genannte Mesozyklone. Hochreichend heißt, dass mindestens ein Drittel der Aufwinde rotiert; persistent heißt, dass die Rotation mindestens so lange andauert wie ein Konvektionszyklus. Das sind gewöhnlich etwa 10 bis 20 Minuten, per Definition muss allerdings mindestens 30 Minuten lang Rotation vorliegen, damit man von einer Superzelle sprechen kann. Dabei überwiegt die zyklonale Rotation: auf der Nordhalbkugel entgegen dem Uhrzeigersinn, auf der Südhalbkugel umgekehrt.
