Mort Garson war in den 1970ern einer der wenigen Menschen, die privat einen Moog Synthesizer nutzen konnten und produzierte mit diesem das erste Album an der Westküste der USA, das vollständig auf einem Moog komponiert wurde – Mother Earth’s „Plantasia“. Die Musik auf diesem Album wurde speziell für Pflanzen komponiert, die dadurch besser wachsen sollten. Das Album hatte nach seiner Veröffentlichung nur eine sehr begrenzte Verbreitung, denn es war für Leute erhältlich, die eine Zimmerpflanze in einem Laden namens Mother Earth auf der Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles kauften oder eine bestimmte Matratze die mit der Platte geliefert wurden. Infolgedessen erlangte das Album zum Zeitpunkt seiner Veröffentlichung keine große Popularität. Seitdem hat es jedoch als frühes Werk der elektronischen Musik Kultstatus erlangt. Mittlerweile gibt es das frühe Stück der elektronischen Musik natürlich auch auf Vinyl. Ohne Matratze oder Zimmerpflanze. Ob Pflanzen dadurch besser wachsen, wurde nicht endgültig geklärt.

„For me it’s something of a dream machine“ – Peter Gabriel.

Andy Batten-Foster interviews futurist Ray Hammond and former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel about the impact that the synthesizer is having on popular and classical music. What long-term effects will it have on the way music is produced?

Gabriel believes that the convenience and efficiency of synthesizers will enable artists to put greater emphasis on imagination, and less on the more time-consuming technical aspects of music production. He also feels that the synthesizer will make music far more accessible to people of all skill levels.

Hammond, on the other hand, feels that the synthesizer poses a genuine threat to session musicians, and session drummers in particular.

A DVS (Digital Vinyl System) allows you to slow down, zoom in, scratch and listen between the notes. Use it to create new compositions, as a simple sound synthesizer, as a playful scratch tool, or to play relaxing music in the background.

The last few weeks I’ve been dabbling around with the CH32V003, a 32-bit RISC-V microcontroller that’s unbelievably cheap.
One of the first things that occurred to me, when I noticed it didn’t have hardware USB but the processor is clocked at 48MHz, is that it would be awesome to write a software USB stack for it. I have wanted, for a long time, to dig deep and write a bit-banged USB library, just because it’s the best way to learn. I greatly enjoyed writing my ethernet bootloader in assembly. It’s hard to justify writing a USB stack from scratch when one already exists, however, so when I saw the CH32V003 I thought this was the perfect time to do something both educational and useful.

Picture my surprise to find that CNLohr has already done it! I can’t exactly complain, that’s a fantastic achievement and makes the chip even more useful and impressive than it already was.

The very least I can do is get some USB-MIDI working on the chip. At the time of writing, the USB-MIDI demo was unfinished, so I tried it out by soldering a dev board together. It started out a little smaller, but by the end of the experimentation my board looked like this:

Das Subharchord ist ein elektronisches Musikinstrument, das insbesondere Untertöne (subharmonische Töne) in die Klangerzeugung einbezieht. Es wurde in der DDR entwickelt und in wenigen Exemplaren produziert.

Der neuartige elektronische Klang- und Geräuscherzeuger wurde auf Initiative von Gerhard Steinke, vormals Direktor im Rundfunk- und Fernsehtechnischen Zentralamt (RFZ) Berlin-Adlershof, von einem Team um Ernst Schreiber in den Jahren 1959 bis 1968 speziell für den Einsatz in Studios für experimentelle bzw. elektroakustische Musik sowie für den Einsatz in Rundfunk-, Film- und Fernsehstudios entwickelt. Gebaut wurde das Subharchord in einer Kleinserie von sechs Stück im RFZ Berlin. Eine spätere Fertigung sollte von der Firma Heliradio in Limbach-Oberfrohna erfolgen. Die Entwicklung des Klanginstruments wurde ab 1970 aus „musikpolitischen Gründen“ in der DDR gestoppt. Ein Gerät wurde im Funkhaus Nalepastraße gesichert hinterstellt. Das Gerät geriet in Vergessenheit und wurde im April 2003 von dem Berliner Klangkünstler und Musikhistoriker Manfred Miersch im Funkhaus Nalepastraße wiederentdeckt.

The Omnichord is an electronic musical instrument introduced in 1981 by the Suzuki Musical Instrument Corporation.[1] It typically features a touch plate known as “SonicStrings”, preset rhythms, auto-bass line functionality, and buttons for major, minor, and 7th chords. The most basic method of playing the instrument is to press the chord buttons and swipe the SonicStrings with a finger in imitation of strumming a stringed instrument. The SonicStrings may also be touched in one place to create a single note. Originally designed as an electronic Autoharp, the Omnichord has become popular, due to its unique, chiming, harplike timbre and its value as a kitsch object.

Together with Chrisi from KOMA Elektronik and my husband Daniel, I am in the process of building a device (the „SynLimb“) that attaches to my arm prosthesis instead of the prosthetic hand. The SynLimb converts the electrode signals that my prosthesis picks up from my residual limb into control voltages (CV) for controlling my modular synthesizer. The SynLimb thus allows me to plug my prosthesis directly into my snythesizer so that I can control its parameters with the signals from my body that normally control the hand. For me, this feels like controlling the synth with my thoughts. I show the prototype(s), explain how we put it together and how it works, and do a little demo.

Seitdem ist der Name Moog zum Synonym für Synthese und legendäre Hardware wie den Minimoog geworden. Die Bob Moog Foundation hat in Asheville, North Carolina, jetzt das Moogseum eröffnet. Ein Museum, das nicht nur Moogs
