Within the context of the Superblock programme, green hubs reclaim part of the space currently used up by private vehicles in order to benefit citizens. They constitute a healthy public space where the city is amenable; one that is conducive to social interaction and fosters the local economy. Citizens can enjoy relaxation, water, brightness and greenery, all within easy reach.

The project revamps the original vision from Ildefons Cerdà. Starting with the regeneration of the network of streets, four green hubs have been created with their respective squares where they meet. The project is formed by a total of 21 hubs. Decarbonisation and renaturalisation of the urban landscape places people at the heart of the programme and champions sustainable mobility. A turning point with a crosscutting perspective: one involving urban development centring on ecosystems.

Ich wusste nicht, dass es in den USA bis in die 1970er Wohnungsbauprojekte gab, die an die erinnern, wie sie in den Ostblock-Staaten über Jahrzehnte hinweg durchgezogen wurden und bin ob der optischen Ähnlichkeit doch etwas überrascht. Pruitt-Igoe war ein gescheitertes Projekt des sozialen Wohnungsbaus in St. Louis im US-Bundesstaat Missouri, das von 1955 bis Mitte der 1970er Jahre existierte und erinnert zumindest mich an das, was man damals in Marzahn, Magdeburg, Neubrandenburg, Dresden und überall sonst im Osten sehen konnte. Durchsetzten konnte sich in St. Louis nicht. Pruitt-Igoe wurde 1972 medial viel beachtet abgerissen.

Die Großwohnsiedlung bestand aus 33 elfstöckigen Bauten auf einem 23 Hektar großen Areal am Nordrand von St. Louis. Begrenzt wurde das Areal im Norden von der Cass Avenue, im Westen von der North Jefferson Avenue, im Süden von der Carr Street und im Osten von der North 20th Street. Insgesamt umfasste die Siedlung 2870 Wohnungen, die in fünf Jahren errichtet wurden. Innerhalb weniger Jahre nach der Errichtung fiel das Gebiet zunehmend Vandalismus zum Opfer, was heute vielfach als Beleg für die Broken-Windows-Theorie herangezogen wird. Große Teile von Pruitt-Igoe blieben unbewohnt, und nach mehreren erfolglosen Versuchen der Stadt, die Siedlung zu verbessern, wurde letztlich der Abriss beschlossen, der am 16. März 1972 begann.

In Lithuania, we often see public spaces neglected. A lot of people live in the cleanest apartments but once they step outside the situation changes. Stairwells, yards, and other public spaces are often ignored and not looked after. For this reason, we have decided to balance these daily surroundings and introduced the outside to the inside. A classic look of local facades were chosen. Photos were taken in a local neighborhood and transformed into blocks. For different cultures and history experiences, people will look at this project differently, but for us it is our usual facades that we grew up with. These building were built during the Soviet Occupation and are becoming extinct with the EU sponsored renovation projects, but we still have proper time to say goodbye. Not to neglect, but just to accept all, and move forward to a better and more optimistic tomorrow.

Was in Berlin und Wien seiner Zeit als Kunstaktionen installiert wurde, ist in Kalifornien von der Realität eingeholt worden. Dort nämlich haben Bahnmitarbeiter geheime Wohnungen in Bahnhöfe gebaut, die bis dahin ungenutzte Büroflächen waren. Auch eine Variante mit dem Wohnraummangel umzugehen. Doof: sie wurden erwischt und gefeuert.

Der 14-stöckige von Anton Anderson konstruierte Gebäudekomplex der Begich Towers beherbergt heute nicht nur den Großteil der Einwohner des Ortes, sondern auch die gesamte Infrastruktur der Stadt, wie die Verwaltung und Behörden der Gemeinde, Einkaufsmöglichkeiten, ein Hospital, Post, Bank, Kirche, Waschsalon, ein kleines Hotel (8 Suiten im obersten Stockwerk) sowie eine Freizeitanlage mit Schwimmbad und Fitnessräumen. Selbst die im Außenbereich untergebrachte Schule ist mittels eines Tunnels erreichbar, sodass man das Gebäude nicht verlassen muss. Aufgrund dessen erhielt Whittier auch den Spitznamen „Stadt unter einem Dach“ (“city under one roof”).

Peter Santenello ist mal dort hingefahren und hat sich die nicht ganz gewöhnliche Stadt aus der Nähe angesehen.

Ich war etwas konsterniert, denn niemand, den ich kannte, hörte Bon Jovi. Nicht mal ironisch. Wirklich nicht. Ich stieg dann irgendwann aus ihrem Auto und erzählte irgendwem später, ja, schon auch so ein bisschen Arschloch-mäßig, dass ich glauben würde, dass primär nur Pfarrerstöchter Bon Jovi hören würden. Was ich heute so nicht mehr sagen würde. Aber für den Joke hat es damals gereicht.

Ein paar Monate später stellte sich heraus, dass die neue Kollegin tatsächlich die Tochter eines Pfarrers war – und Bon Jovi mochte.

Aber: sie ist bis heute eine verdammt stabile Kollegin. Eine der Besten. Trotz ihrer damaligen Vorliebe für Bon Jovi. Habe ich mir vor ihr auch nicht denken können – und bin froh, immer noch dazuzulernen. Und finde Bon Jovi trotz dessen immer noch ziemlich beschissen. Aber wenn dann ein ganzer Park mit einem Tüpen auf der Bank dazu zu singen anfängt, auch irgendwie ein bisschen dolle okay. Ja.

Alles andere wäre auch ziemlich anders gewesen, aber nach diesem Insta-Beitrag von Rocco samt seiner Brüder dürfte klar sein, dass diese aktuell urbane Kunstinstallation in Berlin von genau ihnen kommen dürfte. Sollte. Muss.

At exactly the same spot where four years earlier the BVG has evicted a young collective of artists, one can now find a new and fully furnished office space. When she opened her favorite newspaper this morning, Petra Nelken, press officer of BVG, was so shocked about the freshly publicised photos of the office that she dropped her coffee over her Leberwurstsandwich.“

Und dann wundere ich mich halt kurz ein bisschen darüber, dass die Hinweise dazu erst an Berliner Medien gehen müssen, um letztendlich bei der BVG anzukommen. Aber die stecken wahrscheinlich ein Teil ihres Geldes lieber ohnehin in Social-Media-Agenturen, die darüber lachen machen sollen, dass vieles nichts funktioniert, als sich genau darüber ärgern zu dürfen. Oder so. Rocco und sein Brüder haken da ganz subtil nochmal nach.

The concept focuses on the current megatrends and takes into account the dramatically changed shopping behavior, as well as a new form of mobility without a car. Customers have little time and appreciate convenience and comfort. This is clearly noticeable in the furnishing area: More and more customers no longer even think about carrying their purchases home themselves. You can have them delivered.

Keine Ahnung, wo genau und im welchen Kontext diese Aufnahme entstanden ist. Aber stellen wir uns einfach mal vor, dort trat tatsächlich eine Frau auf ihren Balkon und singt auf diesem eine Oper. Und dann schreien ihre Nachbarn nicht, „Halt die Fresse!“ und geben sich dem hin. Wie schön bitte ist denn dieser Gedanke und die Reaktion auf den Gesang, solang die Sache hier nicht irgendwie editiert wurde?

Ich mag in dem Moment genau daran glauben – und dann sind Menschen auf einmal auch nur halb so scheiße, wie an sich.

The Guardian hat eine Hintergrundstory dazu:

“It’s a lovely oasis,” says (resident) Fazila Kapasi, as she tails her four-year-old son around on his bike along one of the complex’s neat roads. “I cannot recommend it enough.”

Fazila and her husband moved to Jakarta from Mumbai, and chose Cosmo Park partly because they were concerned about Jakarta’s floods. But after living there for six years Fazila can reel off a string of other advantages, including that it is less isolating than standard apartment living.

In the afternoon Fazila stops to chat to her neighbours, while most days she and her son feed the pigeons that live in a nearby tree. She also has her own garden, where she has a hammock and space to grow aubergines, tomatoes and chillies.

“It is so good. There is so much open space, my son can ride his bike around. It’s so central, it’s really safe, and there is a lovely neighbourhood feel,” she says.
