Björk Guðmundsdóttir x Tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar live at Stöð 2 (1991).

As filler material during their coverage of the 1991 Icelandic parliamentary elections, TV station Stöð 2 asked Björk to perform some jazz tunes with Tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar off their record Gling-gló. The trio had been asked by Icelandic public radio to record some old Icelandic standards and recruited the singer, who chose the 14 Icelandic songs, as well as a couple of foreign standards. The recording was then released as an album.

Iceland // Gusts from the Highlands

It was even better getting to show my Wife’s family this place we’ve grown to love so much over the past 5 years. “Gusts From The Highlands” is my 3rd travel piece I’ve had the pleasure of creating there. Bringing along the Leica Q2 was a great addition in the toolkit for shooting the photos you see in this piece. It was fun experimenting with the Sirui anamorphic’s as well.

It’s a place of vibrant landscapes, from lush green hills to dark lava plains and a spectrum of colors in between…But this beauty isn’t easy to access. It’s hidden behind challenging roads, river crossings, and minimal facilities, except for a few remote huts and camping spots. You need a sturdy 4×4 vehicle to explore these hidden gems.

Mix: For the Love of Iceland

(Foto: 12019)

The swimming pool is first and foremost a communal space. „The swimming pool is your second home,“ Helgason says. „You are brought up in the swimming pool.“ There may be only 160, or so, swimming pools in the entire country (which is roughly 305 miles wide by 105 miles long), but every one of them is the essential social hub of a community, large or small.

The swimming pool is a public utility — as critical as the grocery store or the bank. „The British go to the pub, the French go to the cafes — in our culture, you meet in the swimming pool,“ says Helgason. Swimmers come from all walks of life, from farmers to artists to clergymen to celebrities. „You can have 10, 15, 20, 30 people [in the pool] — they’re talking about politics and about their lives.“

„Nothing ruins a glacier hike like an email from your boss. Thankfully, Iceland’s very special horses will reply to your work emails so you can enjoy your vacation in peace (Seriously).“

The Icelandverse is unlike any other open-world experience with “-verse” in name, because it’s real. Plus, you don’t need a funny-looking VR headset.
