Ich weiß, dass AKAI irgendwann mal HiFi-Komponenten baute. So Tonbänder und Tapedecks. Ich persönlich hatte nur mit den Samplern des Herstellers zu tun. Dafür davon allerdings ziemlich intensiv. Heute ist die Marke nicht mehr sonderlich geläufig. Bisschen Unterhaltungselektronikgeschichte.

GTA 3 on a Volumetric Display

Auf wundersame Weise faszierend.

The software is based on the RE3 source. I added a software voxeliser to RenderWare which does most of the work, but there were also a bunch of hacks to the game to get the camera to do something reasonable – it’s not a general solution that could be dropped into any RW title.

I’m revisiting this because lots of people were disappointed that I didn’t move the camera in the previous „on a“ video. The next one will be something new.

Donut shop in Indiana still using a Commodore 64

Eine ähnliche Geschichte hatte ich hier 2016 schon mal aus einer polnischen KFZ-Werkstatt. Keine Ahnung, ob die dort den C64 noch immer stehen haben, in einem Donut Shop in Indiana jedenfalls haben sie noch zwei der alten Kisten im Betrieb. Warum auch ändern, so lange es läuft?

Sonys MiniDisc Laptop

Für die Nostalgieromantischen heute: der Sony Vaio NV-200 mit MiniDisc-Laufwerk. Warum das in den 00er Jahrendarin verbaut wurde, weiß wahrscheinlich nur Sony selber, denn alles, was das Laufwerk konnte, war Musik abspielen. Vielleicht dachte man damals einfach, „lass das mal machen, weil wir es machen können“. Setzte sich dann aber nicht durch.

Klassische Frontlichtscheibenwischersysteme für Autos

Ich weiß gar nicht, ob derartige Erfindung überhaupt einen fühlbaren Nutzen hatten. Offensichtlich eher nicht, sonst wären sie vermutlich immer noch verbaut. Aber dabei zuzusehen, wie Scheibenwischer die Frontlichter von alten Autos wischen, erfüllt mich irgendwie mit Genugtuung. Nicht so sehr wie klappbaren Frontlampen von damals, aber schon etwas.

Teaching an Old Mac New Tricks

Ich sitze seit Tagen an einem 20 Jahre alten PowerMac G5, um mit diesem Mini DV Bänder auf den Rechner zu spielen. Das Ding ist staubalt, etwas langsam, Updates dafür gibt es schon ewig nicht mehr, aber die alte iMovie Version macht nach wie vor einen wirklich stabilen Job, auch wenn die endgültige Qualität zu wünschen übrig lässt und man für all das sehr, sehr viel Geduld braucht. Es funktioniert, aber darum soll es gar nicht gehen.

Hunter Irving hat sich einen noch viel älteren Mac genommen und ihn mit modernem Internet gefüttert, dass das Gerät vorher noch nie gesehen haben dürfte. Und auch das funktioniert. Wenn auch etwas eingeschränkt.
