Would you live in a treehouse? The appeal is obvious to any kid, but it can seem like a daunting idea for adults. Nevertheless, cultural interest has erupted in recent years. You can vacation at a „treesort,“ or watch a reality show about treetop architecture, or even rent a room in a treehouse on Airbnb.
In this short documentary, we interview people who build, live in, and love treehouses. These are far from the forts of childhood memory, though. They employ artificial limbs for support, boast both plumbing and running water, and wouldn’t look out of place in luxury lifestyle magazines. „Treehouses are becoming more and more adult,“ says Michael Garnier, a treehouse building pioneer. „They’re not just for kids anymore.“

Eigentlich weiß ich nicht sonderlich viel über den in Graz lebenden SRGJ. Um genauer zu sein, rein gar nichts. Er schickte mir im Laufe des Jahres mal einen Mix von sich, den ich ziemlich geil fand. Seitdem höre ich immer wieder mal bei ihm rein.
Er bricht gerne mal über Genre-Grenzen hinaus und verbindet Musik dennoch enorm passend – auch wenn man das ohne dem von ihm gegebenen Kontext so gar nicht vermuten würde. Und das macht er dann auch technisch noch sehr, sehr gut. So fädelt er hier Soul, Rare Grooves, postigen Dubstep, Dopebeats und gar Trip Hop auf eine Kette, die er passender Weise „Ofenzeit“ genannt hat.

Jaha. Und vielleicht meinen die das sogar ernst. Rekorde haben Apple und U2 mit dem Spin ja schon gebrochen, keine Frage. Auf jedem Rechner der Welt, auf dem iTunes installiert und der mit dem Netz verbunden ist, ist dieses Album gelandet. Selbst auf den ganzen vielen Phones und Pads und alles. Auch auf meinen. Ich habe es allerdings nicht gehört und für einen zweiten Rekord gesorgt: kein Album der Musikgeschichte dürfte so oft ungehört wieder von Datenträgern gelöscht worden sein. Wer das immer noch nicht getan haben sollte: hier das Remove-Tutorial. Begeistert waren davon alle irgendwie nicht so ganz. Die beim Rolling Stone haben es sich dennoch angehört und beschieden:
There was no bigger album of 2014 – in terms of surprise, generosity and controversy. Songs of Innocence is also the rebirth of the year. Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. put their lives on the line: giving away 11 songs of guitar rapture and frank, emotional tales of how they became a band out of the rough streets and spiritual ferment of Seventies Dublin. This is personal history with details. In the furiously brooding „Cedarwood Road,“ named after Bono’s home address as a boy, he recalls the fear and rage that drove him to punk rock. „The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)“ is a glam-stomp homage to the misfit voice that inspired Bono to sing. And that’s his mother, who died when Bono was 14, still guiding and comforting him in the chorus of „Iris (Hold Me Close).“
This is a record full of the band’s stories and triumph, memory and confession detonated with adventure and poise. In its range of sounds, there may be no more complete U2 album: The band bonded its founding post-punk values with dance momentum in „Volcano“ and the raw, jagged „Raised by Wolves,“ and humanized the digital pathos of „Every Breaking Wave“ and the harrowing „Sleep Like a Baby Tonight“ with the vocal folk-soul warmth of The Joshua Tree. „I have a will for survival,“ Bono sings in the closing track, „The Troubles.“ Songs of Innocence is the proof – and the emotionally raw rock album of the year, at any price.
Vielleicht aber ist der Job eines Musikjournalisten auch gar nicht der Ponyhof, den sich unsereins darunter immer so vorstellt und die tun sich noch viel mehr rein, als wir jemals zu glauben wagten.
Auf Platz zwei übrigens Bruce Springsteen. Darüber kann man sicher reden, wie ich den kenne. Womöglich aber werden die beim Rolling Stone auch endgültig alt. Oder so.
