A Christmas Tree Playing O Christmas Tree

To get in the festive spirit we’ve hooked up a Christmas tree to our bionic arms to help it play O Christmas Tree. The O Christmas Tree song originates from a 16th-century Silesian folk song called, “O Tannenbaum.” which means fir tree. The song praises the fir tree for its constant green appearance, which symbolises loyalty and faithfulness.

In this performance bioelectrical signals in the tree determine when it moves its arms, but we set which arm it moves/ note it plays (unlike our other videos where the plants/ fungi fully improvise).

Eine lebende Pflanze steuert eine Machete durch einen Industrieroboterarm

David Bowen hat mit der „Plant Machete“ eine Installation geschaffen für die eine Pflanze über einen Industrieroboterarm eine Machete steuert. Die Pflanze wird somit zu etwas wie dem Gehirn des Roboters. Keine Ahnung, wie er auf die Idee kam, aber die Umsetzung ist faszinierend.

This installation enables a live plant to control a machete. plant machete has a control system that reads and utilizes the electrical noises found in a live philodendron. The system uses an open source micro-controller connected to the plant to read varying resistance signals across the plant’s leaves. Using custom software, these signals are mapped in real-time to the movements of the joints of the industrial robot holding a machete. In this way, the movements of the machete are determined based on input from the plant. Essentially the plant is the brain of the robot controlling the machete determining how it swings, jabs, slices and interacts in space.

Der Werkzeughersteller Festo hat einen neuen bionischen Roboter am Start. Für die Entwicklung hat man sich von der Agilität der Flughunde inspirieren lassen. Und wie immer gilt: gleichsam so creepy wie auch faszinierend.

Inspiration Flughund: Dank seiner intelligenten Kinematik beherrscht der BionicFlyingFox die agilen Flugmanöver seines natürlichen Vorbilds. Um sich dabei in einem definierten Luftraum teilautonom zu bewegen, kommuniziert er permanent mit einem sogenannten Motion-Tracking-System.
