Tyler Hulett hat sich am Kīlauea Vulkan in Hawaii einen Sonnenaufgang angesehen und dabei seine Kamera auf das Blut der Erde gerichtet: Lava. Alles vernichtend und gleichsam wunderschön.

So ein Leben als Oktopus vor Hawaii ist auch nur so lange geil, bis ein Aal dir an den Kragen will. Dann musste dir halt irgendwas einfallen lassen und womöglich auch ein bisschen was opfern. Zumindest dann, wenn dir der Rest deines Salzwasserlebens noch irgendwas wert sein sollte. Vielleicht verpisst sich der Aal dann ja und versucht, den Taucher zu fressen, der gerade das tolle Filmchen deiner gelebten Misere aufnimmt. Erstmal volltinten, den Penner.

Apokalyptisch und gleichsam wunderschön sind diese in Hawaii mit dem Vulkan Kilauea auf Tuchfüllung gehenden Aufnahmen von Lance Page. Habe ich so noch nie gesehen.
The Fire Within is a visceral, artistic study on the Big Island of Hawaii’s hyperactive Kilauea volcano. I was born and raised on the island and all my life up until last year I hadn’t had the chance to come face to face with her incredible presence.
Many in Hawaii refer to the lava as ‚Pele‘, the Hawaiian goddess of fire. After our incredible experiences at the volcano it’s not hard to see why so many islanders to this day see her as a living breathing thing. I wanted to capture her beauty and mysteriousness as well as her unimaginable power in the best way that I knew how. I wanted to just see it doing what it does. I shied away from any human interaction and turned the cameras to the fiery blood of the Earth.
This six and a half minute film is my best attempt at capturing what it felt like to witness molten rock slowly burning down a dense wet rainforest or to peer into a six-hundred-foot-wide lava lake at Kilauea’s summit crater. I’ve never been anywhere else on the planet that demanded as much respect and awareness for the natural environment around me. Her unexpected beauty and unsettling sense of danger were nothing short of humbling and put so much into perspective. Kilauea really did change my life.

Superinteressante Mini-Doku über den Umgang mit Schallplatten in einer Region, die ich diesbezüglich so gar nicht auf dem Zettel hatte: Hawaii. Aber auch von dort kam schon immer Musik – natürlich auch auf Vinyl.
Roger Bong hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, eben jene Tunes und Platten zu sammeln und sie in Form von Mixen auch zu veröffentlichen, was ziemlich geil ist. Über seine Leidenschaft schreibt er auf seinem Blog Aloha Got Soul, seine Mixe packt auf Soundcloud. Das kann dann so klingen.
The music, ignored and inaccessible for so long, is, thanks to Roger finally filtering over the ocean and is feted by the likes of Psychemagik, Floating Points and the hardcore collectors at BBE records for its sun-soaked and gloriously carefree breed of island-tinted soul, funk and rare groove. Heavily influenced by the US and recorded primarily in the 70′s and 80′s, it’s basically impossible not to fall in love with this stuff.
Now, for the first time, Roger has flung open the doors and given us an unprecedented look into the heart of the record digging scene in Hawaii on this lovely film, sharing five of his favourite records and providing an insight into the best record shops and markets on the Pacific archipelago.

Was macht man, wenn der Pilot durchsagt, „Bitte festhalten, wir müssen notwassern? Keine Panik, ich habe alles im Griff.“? Klar, man holt die GoPro raus und nimmt das Debakel erstmal auf. Sollen schließlich auch noch andere was von haben. Und wenn man das im Kasten hat, kann man sich auch um die Schwimmweste kümmern. Aber nur keine Panik, der Pilot hat ja gesagt, dass er alles im Griff hat.
2 KommentareEin großer Tümmler schwimmt vor Hawaii nachts in eine Gruppe Taucher und lässt sich von einem der Taucher die Angelsehne samt Haken entfernen, die sich an ihm verheddert hat. Das wirkt fast so, als würde er den Taucher darum bitten. Als die Sehne fast komplett entfernt ist, zieht er von dannen. Faszinierend.
