Jimi Handtrix hat mit A Jungle Odyssey in meinen Ohren einer der Mixe das Jahres gemacht. Sich in dreieinhalb Stunden mit 100 Tracks durch 25 Jahre Jungle mixen machste nicht eben mal so vorm Frühstück. Und dann, so dachte ich, wäre es ja ganz schön wenn der Mann aus Berlin in diesem Jahr auch ein Kalendertürchen füllen könnte. Konnte er und sammelt hier erneut einige Klassiker des wohlig warmen atmosphärischen Drum & Bass, den ich nach wie vor sehr zu schätzen weiß.

Eine Chronik des Jungles in Form eines dreieinhalbstündigen Mixes, selektiert von Jungle-Head Jimi Handtrix: Sehr schöne Idee, grandios umgesetzt.

Jimi Handtrix spent the last 2 years researching and compiling this historic selection, often spending months hunting for specific tunes, and then spending weeks narrowing down the selection from over 300 tracks – with 4 tunes from every year between 1993 and 2017.

“My aim with this project – which with all the time I spent researching and compiling, somehow felt like a master’s thesis of sorts – was to showcase a selection of my 100 favourite tunes, while taking my listeners on a (chronological) journey through the history of Jungle / Drum & Bass.”

LTJ Bukems „Earth“, mixed: Jimi Handtrix – Destination Earth

Meine Liebe für Downbeats und hiphop-lastigen Lounge dürfte zu einem nicht unerheblichen Teil LTJ Bukems „Earth“ Compilations geschuldet sein, die ich durch die Reihe weg kaufte und die ich auch heute noch im Regal habe. Insgesamt sieben „Earth“ Sampler erschienen zwischen den Jahren 1997 bis 2004 auf Bukems Good Looking Records. Es sind Meisterwerke, die ein sehr breites Spektrum an Musik mitbringen, die nicht nur Bukem selber zu dem jeweiligen Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung gemocht hat: Hip Hop zu Neo Soul über Cosmic Funk, Acid Jazz, Downtempo, Breakbeat, Soulful House und Intelligent Jungle ist alles dabei.

Jimi Handtrix hat sich jetzt mal daran gemacht, diese Serie mit einem Mix zu würdigen. Dabei kam dieser fast vierstündige Mix zu Stande, der „Earth“ durchaus gerecht wird. Sehr geiles Teil!
