Die Anfänge der elektronischen Musik für den kleinen Freitag, zusammengetragen von Dave Michuda.

At last we return to the „Electronic Music of (insert year)“ series. That’s obviously not the actual title of the series but since I don’t have a title that will do for this post. I really enjoyed putting together mixes for for 1970, ’71, and ’72 but then I got distracted and lazy, and I almost forgot about the series.

Now we’re back to 1973 to continue our journey through the electronic music of the decade. I went down a Tangerine Dream rabbit hole recently and discovered their album Atem, which I had somehow missed. But I was happy to have found it because it fit in nicely with this ’73 collection.

Dune – The Storm • An Alternative Soundtrack

Dave von Low Light Mixes hat sich anlässlich des Kinostarts von Dune 2 daran gemacht, einen alternativen Soundtrack zu dem epischen Film zu gestalten. Das ist natürlich sehr, sehr subjektiv, klingt aber so, als würde das verdammt gut passen.

Denis Villeneuve’s eagerly anticipated continuation of the Dune saga has arrived. I am definitely psyched about seeing it this weekend. So ramp up my excitement even more I made an alternative soundtrack mix. This set features tracks that sound like they might fit the film but are not from either of the two actual soundtracks.

Mixtape: Quiet Indie Songs

Hier ist es zwar tagsüber noch warm, aber die Tage werden schnell kürzer und abends wird es schon früher dunkel, die Luft schmeckt langsam aber sicher nach Herbst und ich vermisse den Sommer jetzt schon. In genau diese Gefühlslage passt das neue Mixtape von Dave, der dafür einige entspannte Indie-Veröffentlichungen aus diesem Jahr aneinandergereiht hat. Das macht den ausbleichenden Sommer nicht besser, umrahmt klanglich aber passend den Herbst.

Forbidden Colours – A Tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto

Dave von Low Light Mixes mit einem Tribute-Mix, der das musikalische Schaffen von Ryuichi Sakamoto sammelt und ehren soll. Passt.

Another musical great has left this world. Ryuichi Sakamoto was a founding member of Yellow Magic Orchestra. He became well known for his neo-classical work, his collaborations, and of course his film scores, from Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence to The Revenant to the Oscar-winning score for The Last Emperor. The solo piano version of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is one of my favorite piano pieces ever written.

In January of this year he released an album of piano tracks, called 12, that is hauntingly simple and beautiful.

In 2017 he recorded a track called „Life, Life“, from the album Async, that is one of my favorite pieces of all time. I’d like to finish this post with the spoken word poem that appears in that track…

Low Light Mix zum Piano Day 2023

Dave von Low Light Mixes hat anlässlich des heutigen Piano Days einen Mix gewebt, der – Überraschung – einzig und allein aus ambienten Piano Tunes besteht. Ich lass den mal hier, während er durchläuft.

International Piano Day is March 29th and, as has been the case for the last five years, I’ve put together a new mix in celebration of ambient piano tunes. I don’t do quite as many piano mixes as I once did but when I create these Piano Day sets I find I really enjoy the vibe.

There are a lot of new tracks in the mix, half of them from 2022 & 2023. But there are a few older tunes as well. I really like how this one turned out. I hope you enjoy the latest Piano Day excursion.

Neuer Low Light Mix, der sich ganz wunderbar den doch noch mal kälter werdenden Temperaturen anpasst und bei dem mich alleine die Tracklist schon sehr abholt. Hier auch zum Download.

This mix is much more straightforward than the Antarctica set. This mix follows my „dubby & dreamy“ formula of ethereal ambient dub tracks with a few gentle beats and lots of synth washes.

Low Light Mixes: Dune – an alternative soundtrack

Ich war neulich mit meiner Kleinen im Berliner Zoo Palast. Wir haben zusammen die 2021er Version von Dune gesehen. Sie wegen Timothée Chalamet
und Rebecca Ferguson, ich wegen damals. Wir waren beide danach aus unterschiedlichen Gründen gleichsam geflasht wie verwirrt. Und jetzt kommt Dave Michuda von Low Light Mixes mit dem besten Ambient-Blog des ganzen Internets um die Ecke und bietet einen vermeintlich alternativen Soundtrack zum cineastischen Original an. Und den nehm ich jetzt einfach mal so an. Weil er passt. Wirklich.

Wundervoll traurig: Low Lights Mix zum „Piano Day 2020“

Heute ist der 88. Tag des Jahres und unabhängig davon, welche hässliche Assoziation wir Kartoffeln zu dieser Zahl haben, hat ein Piano nunmal 88 Tasten. Daraus ergibt sich dann der alljährliche Piano Day. Klar soweit.

Hier ist’s gerade nicht ganz so schön. Häusliche Isolation fetzt nicht, der alte Diabetes-Hund hat sich gestern irgendwoher Schokokekse gezockt und musste nach einer fiesen Überzuckerung erstmal in die Tierklinik. Die Angst ist nicht klein. Sie ist alt, mittlerweile blind, hat Krebs und ist der mir liebste Hund der ganzen Welt. Ich bin ein wenig verschnupft und nicht sonderlich gut drauf. Wie auch? Bei all dem.

Nun ist es ja nicht so, dass in Moll triefende Pianomelodien diese Stimmung sehr viel besser machen könnten. Aber es ist nun mal Piano Day und so ein bisschen Traurigkeit kann man sich an diesem gerne schon mal geben. Auf das es Morgen besser wird. Danke an Low Light für dieses schöne Stück Musik.

Low Light Mixes‘ Favorite Ambient Tracks of All Time

Dieser Mix hier ist schon etwas älter und obwohl ich Dave sein fantastisches Ambient-Blog Low Light Mixes im Reader habe, seinerzeit an mir vorbeigegangen, aber jetzt gerade ist mir so ambient und das Ding trägt mich ganz wunderbar durch die Nacht. Aphex Twin sein „Rhubarb“ ist dabei, Martin Jules und Brain Eno sowieso. Ich persönlich hätte noch einige Namlook Nummern mit drin, 2-3 Recylce Or Die Platten und des Dubs wegen auch einige beatlose Thinner-Perlen aber grundsätzlich passt das so schon ganz gut, ja. Wunderschöne zwei Stunden, die man auch ohne Flügel fliegen kann.
