Im Amazonas-Manatee-Rettungszentrum in Iquitos, Peru, kümmern sich Tierpfleger um einige der sanftesten Riesen des Amazonas – verwaiste Manatee-Babys. Und ich denke jetzt vielleicht über eine Umschulung nach.

Each rescued calf arrives weak, frightened, and alone after losing its mother to hunting or habitat destruction. But thanks to the love and dedication of Juan Sanchez Babilonia and his team, these little “sea cows” get a second chance at life.

From bottle-feeding to teaching them how to swim and forage again, every step brings them closer to returning home — the wild rivers of the Amazon.

Ever tried babysitting underwater? At the Amazonian Manatee Rescue Center in Iquitos, Peru, caretakers look after some of the gentlest giants of the Amazon — orphaned baby manatees.
Each rescued calf arrives weak, frightened, and alone after losing its mother to hunting or habitat destruction. But thanks to the love and dedication of Juan Sanchez Babilonia and his team, these little “sea cows” get a second chance at life.

Polizei in Florida informiert: Manatees in love

Die Polizei im Pinellas County, Florida, erhielt in letzter Zeit mehrere Notrufe von besorgten Anwohnern – Grund dafür war das vermehrte Auftauchen von Rundschwanzseekühen in Strandnähe. Die Behörden geben Entwarnung: Den Tieren geht es bestens. Sie treffen sich zur Paarung.

»Rufen Sie uns nicht an«, heißt es in dem Video der Polizei. Den Tieren gehe es mehr als gut. »Es ist Paarungszeit.« Musikalisch unterlegt ist der Clip mit dem Song »Let’s Get It On« von Marvin Gaye.

SwimShady und seine Gang auf dem Weg in die Freiheit

Ich bin gerade etwas enttäuscht darüber, dass es dort draußen ein Manatee namens SwimShady gibt, von dem ich bisher nichts wusste – und vor allem dass mich darüber bis heute noch keiner in Kenntnis gesetzt hat! Was soll denn das?

SwimShady, Alby & Manhattan are ready to return to FL. The primary goal was to get them big & strong enough to return to their native waters. Since arriving, they’ve consumed about 166,158 lbs of food & gained a combined total of about 1000 lbs! Nineteen manatees rehabilitated at the Cincinnati Zoo have returned to Florida waters, and Alby, Manhattan, and SwimShady will be released after they become reacclimated at one of the care facilities in Florida. The goal of the Manatee Rescue Partnership is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release manatees, and we’re honored to play a role in this important conservation work.
