The contraction and relaxation of the mercury is due to changes in the surface tension of, and charge on, the mercury drop. When the mercury is not in contact with the iron nail, it’s surface becomes oxidized and the positive mercury ions repel each other, causing the mercury pool to relax (ie. lower its surface tension). The relaxation causes the mercury to come into contact with the iron nail, which has a sufficiently negative electrochemical potential to reduce the mercury ions to mercury metal. The surface tension of the mercury increases and the pool contracts, causing the contact with the nail to be broken. The mercury surface reacts with the acid and becomes oxidized again, thereby, completing one cycle of the oscillation.

Ambient in seiner reinsten und womöglich ehrlichsten Form. 1992 gründete Pete Namlook das Label FAX +49-69/450464 und veröffentlicht dort seit dem regelmäßig Ambient-Alben, für die er immer wieder hochkarätige Produzenten, wenn nicht gar die besten verpflichtet. Mittlerweile kommt das Label auf über 200 Veröffentlichungen und es gab Jahre, in denen man das Gefühl hatte, als würde jede Woche ein neues Album erscheinen. Ich habe über die Jahre etliche Alben von FAX gekauft und habe heute von keinem anderen Label so viele Veröffentlichungen. Deshalb hatte ich auch immer mal vor einen Label-Mix aus diesen zu machen. Wild Dragon hat genau das jetzt getan und 50 Tracks von FAX +49-69/450464 zu einem über 4,5 Stunden langen Mix verschweißt. Ein Traum der ambienten Klänge als Querschnitt durch das Schaffen von FAX +49-69/450464.
Leider gibt es den Mix nur in einem krüppeligen Stream oder als direkten Download. Vielleicht ist ja jemand so gütig und lädt das Dingen auf Mixcloud oder so.
