Punktlose Giraffe

Im Brights Zoo in Limestone, Tennessee, wurde im letzten Monat ein Giraffenbaby ohne Punktierung des Fells geboren. „Giraffenexperten glauben, dass sie die einzige einfarbige Netzgiraffe ist, die irgendwo auf dem Planeten lebt“, sagt der Zoo.

Auf der Suche nach Futter.

An Eden’s whale trap feeding in the Gulf of Thailand. This extraordinary behaviour (where the whale treads water!) is thought to have developed because pollution has made the Gulf of Thailand a hypoxic environment.

Sewage outflows from the land have caused all the oxygen in the water to be used up, except at the surface. This means the whale’s fish prey can only live in this surface layer. By treading water and keeping the corners of their mouth below the surface, a flow is created pulling the fish into the whale’s mouth.

In the panic, some of the fish also seem to jump out the water and into the whale’s mouth!

Leopard attackiert eine Gruppe Paviane

Neulich im Krüger-Nationalpark: buntes Pavian-Treiben auf einer Straße, das von einem hungrigen Leoparden unterbrochen wird, der offenbar in der Hoffnung etwas in den Mage zu kriegen, einfach mal attackiert. Die Pavianweibchen bringen ihre Jungen in Sicherheit, der Rest der Pavian-Gang verteidigt sich erfolgreich gegen den Angreifer und schlägt ihn in die Flucht.

A full-out brawl broke loose in the middle of the road when a leopard thought he would make a quick meal of a baboon. The leopard came charging towards the family at full speed, but the male baboons weren’t having any of it.

Kunst mit Ameisen: Antworks

Die Künstlerin Catherine Chalmers macht in Zusammenarbeit mit Blattschneiderameisen kleine Kunstwerke. Sie erklärt:

The work encourages us to empathize with bugs. One reason they disgust us, Chalmers believes, is that they seem immoral, or at least differently moral. „We see ourselves as individuals,“ she said. „And we see insects as being this uniform, formless mass that will sacrifice themselves and do all these sorts of things.“ Some of her photos capture a praying mantis eating the head of her mate. „Civilization is a march for greater and greater and greater control over the world,“ she said. But nature doesn’t play by our rules.

Hunderte Golden Retriever versammeln sich in den schottischen Highlands

Golden Gathering in Schottland.

Hundreds of golden retrievers, and their owners, have gathered at the Highland ancestral home of the breed.

The first golden retriever puppies were born at Guisachan House in Glen Affric 155 years ago.

They were bred by aristocrat Sir Dudley Marjoribanks, who wanted a gun dog suited to Scottish Highland terrain.

Owners from across the UK, continental Europe, North America, Australia and Japan have been meeting at the ruins of Guisachan House.
