Ich habe grundsätzlich nichts dagegen, den CO2-Ausstoß in Großstädten in den Griff zu bekommen und das notfalls auch durch Fahrverbote durchzusetzen. Nicht mal als Besitzer eines Dieselautos. Aber im Berliner Fall scheint mir gut gedacht noch lange nicht gut gemacht zu sein.

Da kommt gänzlich der Farbfreund in mir durch: Um die Temperaturen in der Innenstadt von Los Angeles zu senken, überziehen sie einige Straßen und bald auch Dächer mit einem weißen reflektierenden Material, um so „Hitzeinseln“ runterzukühlen. Verdammt kreative Idee, die in ihrer Umsetzung dann von oben auch noch verdammt gut aussieht.
Last spring, the Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services tested a new, creative approach to combat the rising temperatures in the city center. The pilot project covered one neighborhood street in each of the LA’s 15 council districts with CoolSeal, a more reflective asphalt-based coating developed by California-based company GuardTop. After seeing a difference of 11-13 degrees Fahrenheit on the coated streets, Los Angeles and other cities plan on implementing more reflective roofs and pavements to reduce the side effects of „heat islands.“

Ohne Aroma, dafür mit all dem Dreck, den der Mensch so ins Wasser bekommt. Drei Studenten an der National Taiwan University of Arts, sammelten Abwasser in ganz Taiwan und machten daraus quasi Eis am Stiel für ihr Projekt mit dem Titel „Polluted Water Popsicles„.
Hung and her teammates visited 100 locations across Taiwan to collect waste. They then placed the samples—complete with dirt, bugs, and trash—into a freezer, turning them into popsicles. In order to preserve them, they encased the popsicles in a polyester resin.
Hung tells Quartz she hopes the project will raise awareness about water pollution. Her team chose to use popsicles as a motif because they are translucent and because popsicles typically look appealing to the eye. “Such pretty popsicles, would you still want to eat them?” she asks.

Arctic sea ice has not only been shrinking in surface area in recent years, it’s becoming younger and thinner as well. In this animation, where the ice cover almost looks gelatinous as it pulses through the seasons, cryospheric scientist Dr. Walt Meier of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center describes how the sea ice has undergone fundamental changes during the era of satellite measurements.
Editor’s note: This visualization incorrectly identifies the oldest ice as being 5+ years old, when it would be more accurate to say 4+ years old.
