„This is a 10-minute live audio excerpt of ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet and NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough conducting a ‘spacewalk’ outside the International Space Station on 24 March 2017. They installed a new computer, disconnected a docking adapter to allow its move to a new location and maintained the Station’s Dextre multipurpose robotic hand – among other tasks.

Besides the voices of Thomas Pesquet and Shane Kimbrough, CAPCOM Jessica Meire and PAO Dan Huot can be heard.

Audio is unedited except for normalising. Occasional muting is thus normal.“

Venedig aus Sicht der ISS

Ich war im letzten Sommer zum ersten Mal in Venedig. Wir waren da eh um die Ecke und dachten, „wenn wir schon mal hier sind“. Also parkten wir unsere Autos am Festland, fuhren unwissend und ungezahlt mit einem Bus zum Bahnhof und erfuhren erst dort, dass Schwarzfahren in Italien auch das Ende deines Urlaubs bedeuten kann, weil die Strafen dafür dort empfindlich teuer sind. Aber Yolo.

Tickets gekauft, mit der Bahn auf die Insel gefahren und gestaunt. Ich weiß, dass die Urteile über Venedig durchaus ambivalent sind und zwischen „ganz beschissen“ und „awesome“ schwanken. Wir jedenfalls fanden Venedig überraschenderweise ziemlich kuhl. Schöne Stadt für ein Wochenende im Spätherbst.

Space Station Fisheye Fly

Sonntagnachmittag – beste Zeit, um mal gemütlich durch die ISS zu schweben.

Auf der ISS wachsen Blumen

Schon im Dezember gelang es den Astronauten auf der ISS, Zinnien gedeihen zu lassen. Vorher hatte man das schon mit Salat geschafft. Interessanterweise sind die wachsenden Pflanzen im All wohl etwas größer als ihre Kumpanen auf der Erde.

Zinnia flowers are starting to grow in the International Space Station’s Veggie facility as part of the VEG-01 investigation. Veggie provides lighting and nutrient supply for plants in the form of a low-cost growth chamber and planting „pillows” to provide nutrients for the root system. These plants appear larger than their ground-based counterparts and scientists expect buds to form on the larger plants soon.

The Veggie facility supports a variety of plant species that can be cultivated for educational outreach, fresh food and even recreation for crew members on long-duration missions. Previously, the facility has grown lettuce — which was consumed by the crew earlier this year — and now investigators are attempting to grow Zinnia flowers. Understanding how flowering plants grow in microgravity can be applied to growing other edible flowering plants, such as tomatoes.
