Combining John Lennon’s composition with Paul McCartney’s predilection for the avant garde, infused with George Harrison’s infatuation with Indian music and underpinned by Ringo Starr’s mesmerizing rhythm, it’s a mind-bending three-minute collage of sonic experiments that helped kick open the doors to a bold new era for popular music. It’s also packed with production quirks, anomalies, and even a few unsolved mysteries.

Bisschen Musikgeschichte. Goldie über seinen nie alt werdenden Klassiker „Inner City Life“. Zeitlos akustische Schönheit. Und wenn mir jemand vor fünf Jahren gesagt hätte, dass Drum’n’Bass noch mal ein Ding werden würde, hätte ich es wahrscheinlich nicht geglaubt.

30 years on from its original release, Goldie shares the story behind ‘Inner City Life’, the first single from his seminal debut album ‘Timeless’.

Written by Goldie, alongside Moving Shadow’s Rob Playford, with vocals from Diane Charlemagne, ‘Inner City Life’ is often regarded as one of the most iconic drum & bass tracks ever made, and instrumental in the scene’s mainstream breakthrough.

Here, Goldie reflects on his early days with Kemistry & Storm, Randall and Grooverider, whilst also sharing stories of how the track came to be signed, the iconic music video and revealing which remixes and cover version hold a special place in his heart.

Electronic music history is rich with unforgettable and timeless classics. In our series, DJ Mag explores the tales behind some of the world’s favourite dance tracks, told by the people that made them.

Beim KiKA gibt es mit Behind the Beats eine Serie, die sich mit der Geschichte verschiedenster musikalischer Genres befasst und diese kurz und kindgerecht aufbereitet. Ziemlich gut gemacht. Und so kommt es, dass der KiKA den Kindern die Geschichte des Drum’n’Bass näher bringt. Featuring Roni Size. Das hätte ich jetzt so auch nicht auf dem Zettel gehabt.

Angie Brown, formerly of Bizarre Inc., shares the story behind their ‘90s house anthem, ‘I’m Gonna Get You’.

Growing up in Brixton in the ‘80s, Angie tells DJ Mag about discovering her voice, and becoming a regular singer on the London club circuit. It was during this time that she was approached by a talent scout on behalf of Bizarre Inc. Meeting the production trio in a studio in Stafford, Brown didn’t initially understand how the track was going to work, having been asked to sing parts of Jocelyn Brown’s ‘Love’s Gonna Get You’ alongside some ad-libs — but only a few months later she was in the charts.

David Lynch’s Lasting Impact On Electronic Music

David Lynch war mehr als ein Filmemacher. Er war neben vielen anderen künstlerischen Aktivitäten auch als Musiker tätig und hat mit seiner Arbeit nicht wenige in ihrem eigenen Schaffen inspiriert. Thomann hat seinem Wirken dieses sehenswerte Video gewidmet.

David Lynch wasn’t just a filmmaker—he was also a sonic visionary. His surreal, dreamlike worlds have left an undeniable mark on electronic music, sound design, and experimental composition, inspiring artists from Flying Lotus, Moby, and Burial to Nine Inch Nails, Special Request, Djrum, Leon Vynehall and Daniel Avery.

From the haunting score of Twin Peaks to the industrial drones of Eraserhead, Lynch’s approach to sound was as groundbreaking as his films. His dark, atmospheric soundscapes influenced entire genres of electronic music, ambient, and experimental sound design. Eraserhead’s oppressive, mechanical noise even inspired Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, shaping his approach to industrial music.

The Most Mysterious Album Rollout of All Time: Boards of Canada – Tomorrow’s Harvest

Bisschen Musikgeschichte am Rande. Über die von uns allen geliebten Boards of Canada und der eigentümlichen Veröffentlichung ihres Albums „Tomorrow’s Harvest“.

On April 20, 2013, a mysterious Boards of Canada vinyl was found in a NYC record store, containing the first of six cryptic transmissions that formed part of a 36-digit code.

This discovery turned out to be the launch of an alternate reality game (ARG) meticulously designed to promote Boards of Canada’s new album, Tomorrow’s Harvest.

The game included, among many other things, a global scavenger hunt for hidden albums, further transmissions across multimedia (BBC Radio 1, NPR, YouTube, Adult Swim), online codebreaking, and a listening party at an abandoned waterpark in the Mojave Desert.

The Guardian praised the album’s viral marketing campaign as „ingenious“ and a testament to the fanbase’s dedication.

Drum Machines 1965 to 1989 – An Audio Journey

Eine nicht weniger als zwei Stunden andauernde Reise durch die Geschichte der Trommelmaschinen auf die uns Daniel’s Electronics mitnimmt. Und ich finde, weniger hätten sie auch gar nicht verdient. Was wäre unser aller Leben ohne diese Zauberkisten?

This is a culmination of four years of recording drum machines. In the mid to late 20th century there was a cambrian explosion of strange and beautiful rhythm machines, with technology reflecting the great revolutions of their time. The first was the transistor revolution, which spawned the concept of what a drum machine could be. Next was the computer revolution, which added programmability. Presented in this video are a sampling of what drum machines sounded like in every year from 1965 to 1989. This is not an exhaustive list, but more of a selection of different types of gear from high end to low end, from standalone to integrated rhythms on keyboards.

Die Geschichte einer wahrlich legendären Trommelmaschine. Ich mag die TR-808 ja immer noch etwas lieber. Weil sie dicker klingt, bauchiger und auch wärmer. Bisschen so wie Omas Kachwelofen. Aber Popmusik im Allgemeinen und elektronische Musik im Speziellen würde ohne beide Maschinen heute mit Sicherheit ganz anders klingen.
