David Lynch’s Lasting Impact On Electronic Music

David Lynch war mehr als ein Filmemacher. Er war neben vielen anderen künstlerischen Aktivitäten auch als Musiker tätig und hat mit seiner Arbeit nicht wenige in ihrem eigenen Schaffen inspiriert. Thomann hat seinem Wirken dieses sehenswerte Video gewidmet.

David Lynch wasn’t just a filmmaker—he was also a sonic visionary. His surreal, dreamlike worlds have left an undeniable mark on electronic music, sound design, and experimental composition, inspiring artists from Flying Lotus, Moby, and Burial to Nine Inch Nails, Special Request, Djrum, Leon Vynehall and Daniel Avery.

From the haunting score of Twin Peaks to the industrial drones of Eraserhead, Lynch’s approach to sound was as groundbreaking as his films. His dark, atmospheric soundscapes influenced entire genres of electronic music, ambient, and experimental sound design. Eraserhead’s oppressive, mechanical noise even inspired Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, shaping his approach to industrial music.

The Most Mysterious Album Rollout of All Time: Boards of Canada – Tomorrow’s Harvest

Bisschen Musikgeschichte am Rande. Über die von uns allen geliebten Boards of Canada und der eigentümlichen Veröffentlichung ihres Albums „Tomorrow’s Harvest“.

On April 20, 2013, a mysterious Boards of Canada vinyl was found in a NYC record store, containing the first of six cryptic transmissions that formed part of a 36-digit code.

This discovery turned out to be the launch of an alternate reality game (ARG) meticulously designed to promote Boards of Canada’s new album, Tomorrow’s Harvest.

The game included, among many other things, a global scavenger hunt for hidden albums, further transmissions across multimedia (BBC Radio 1, NPR, YouTube, Adult Swim), online codebreaking, and a listening party at an abandoned waterpark in the Mojave Desert.

The Guardian praised the album’s viral marketing campaign as „ingenious“ and a testament to the fanbase’s dedication.

Drum Machines 1965 to 1989 – An Audio Journey

Eine nicht weniger als zwei Stunden andauernde Reise durch die Geschichte der Trommelmaschinen auf die uns Daniel’s Electronics mitnimmt. Und ich finde, weniger hätten sie auch gar nicht verdient. Was wäre unser aller Leben ohne diese Zauberkisten?

This is a culmination of four years of recording drum machines. In the mid to late 20th century there was a cambrian explosion of strange and beautiful rhythm machines, with technology reflecting the great revolutions of their time. The first was the transistor revolution, which spawned the concept of what a drum machine could be. Next was the computer revolution, which added programmability. Presented in this video are a sampling of what drum machines sounded like in every year from 1965 to 1989. This is not an exhaustive list, but more of a selection of different types of gear from high end to low end, from standalone to integrated rhythms on keyboards.

Die Geschichte einer wahrlich legendären Trommelmaschine. Ich mag die TR-808 ja immer noch etwas lieber. Weil sie dicker klingt, bauchiger und auch wärmer. Bisschen so wie Omas Kachwelofen. Aber Popmusik im Allgemeinen und elektronische Musik im Speziellen würde ohne beide Maschinen heute mit Sicherheit ganz anders klingen.

Über die Entstehung des Beatles-Songs „Here Comes the Sun“

Jeder kennt „Here Comes the Sun“. Nur beim Lesen kommt einem instant die Melodie in den Kopf, wogegen sich auch gar nichts machen lässt. Wie der Song genau entstanden ist, darüber habe ich nie nachgedacht, wobei ja aber ganz klar ist, dass jeder Song auch seine Geschichte hat. Die von „Here Comes the Sun“ geht so:

Here Comes The Sun has become one of the most popular and treasured Beatles songs, a gateway into their music for many new fans. This 3-minute gem of unforgettable songwriting is also packed with intriguing anomalies, production quirks and even a mystery. Unlike the vast majority of Beatles songs, Here Comes the Sun was not written by the main songwriting duo of Paul McCartney and John Lennon, but rather by George Harrison, the youngest member of the quartet, who contributed two memorable pieces to the Abbey Road album – an endearing love song called Something, and the effervescent Here Comes the Sun.

Der britische Video-Essayist Film Retrospective mit einer akribische Beschreibung der Aufnahmen des damals 1967 mit Spannung erwarteten Albums „Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band“. Musikgeschichte.

The Beatles 1966 World Tour was a living nightmare. They fled Manila fearing for their lives. Been met with an anti-Beatles backlash with public burnings of memorabilia inn the States and faced crazed fans at Candlestick Park. They were now done with touring. …Back in the UK, George is enraged. …Declares he’s leaving the band. Brian Epstein, their manager, frantically reassures him there will be no more touring on this condition he agrees to stay in The Beatles.

Eine lange Nacht über die Neue Deutsche Welle: Jung, laut, dilettantisch

Das tolle Format der langen Nacht des Deutschlandfunks Kultur mit einer dementsprechend langen Sendung über die Neue Deutsche Welle, die in den späten 1970er Jahren über die Republik hinweg schwappte.

Die Neue Deutsche Welle war die deutsche Reaktion auf Punk, auf einen Epochenbruch, der von New York und London ausging. Musikalisch deckten die Bands ein breites Spektrum ab. Was sie einte, waren eine dilettantische Grundhaltung und deutsche Texte.

Doku: Motor City’s Burning – Detroit from Motown to the Stooges

Ein sehenswerter Dokumentarfilm darüber, wie Detroit in den späten 1960er Jahren zur Heimat einer musikalischen Revolution wurde, die den Sound einer Nation im Umbruch einfing. 2008 bei der BBC veröffentlicht. Also auch schon ein paar Jahre her.

In the early 60s, Motown transcended Detroit’s inner city to take black music to a white audience, whilst in the late 60s suburban kids like the MC5 and the Stooges descended into the black inner city to create revolutionary rock expressing the rage of young white America.

With contributions from Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, George Clinton, Martha Reeves, John Sinclair and the MC5.

Blue Beat Baby: Die unerzählte Geschichte von Brigitte

Starten wir mit ein wenig Musikgeschichte in den Tag. Oder konkreter: mit Ska-Geschichte. Es geht um Brigitte Bond, der sich Miss Upsetter hier mal genauer widmet.

Das Beat Girl steht seit 1979 für Ska, Ska-Subkultur und Frauen im Ska, aber über die echte Frau, die die Ikone inspiriert hat, ist bisher wenig bekannt.

Diese nie zuvor erzählte Geschichte entführt Sie in die Zeit von 1964 und führt Sie in die Welt der Macher, Musiker und Mods, Ska- und Stripclubs … und der fabelhaften Brigitte Bond ein.

Brigitte Bond / Brigitte Saint John / Brigitte St. John war die früheste bekannte Transgender-Ska-Musikerin und war auch die Frau, die das ikonische „Beat Girl“-Logo für die 2-Tone-Band The Beat inspirierte.
