Ich habe gerade ne Weile nach dem Plural von „Aurora Borealis“ gesucht und nichts wirklich Plausibles gefunden, deshalb hier mal eben „Polarlichter“ genannt, was so viel unromantischer klingt. Aber sei es drum.
Schon im letzten Jahr veröffentlichte die NASA Aufnahmen, die von der ISS von Polarlichtern gemacht wurden. Die sehen schon immer von hier unten aus verdammt beeindruckend aus, aber von da oben aus eben noch sehr viel mehr.

Wasser auf die Mühlen jener, die an die Echtheit der Mondlandung zweifeln. Vielleicht hat die damals ja auch einfach nur in irgendeiner Küche stattgefunden. „The eagle has landed.“

The video started when Mathematician Gerald Eichstaedt took still shots taken by NASA’s Juno spacecraft and spent 60 hours editing them together. As if this wasn’t enough, animator Seán Doran then spent another 12 hours smoothing each frame, all 2,400 of them, resulting in this awe-inspiring tribute to the gas giant. Time well spent.

Ein KommentarDen Soundtrack dazu einfach selber wählen. Aus der Perspektive auch mal die Welt sehen können, werde ich wohl nicht mehr schaffen. Schade. Aber gut, dass es Aufnahmen wie diese gibt.

The two spacewalkers reconnected cables and electrical connections on PMA-3 at its new home on top of the Harmony module. They also installed the second of the two upgraded computer relay boxes on the station’s truss and installed shields and covers on PMA-3 and the now-vacant common berthing mechanism port on Tranquility.
During the spacewalk, one of the shields was inadvertently lost. The loss posed no immediate danger to the astronauts and Kimbrough and Whitson went on to successfully install the remaining shields on the common berthing mechanism port.

Die britische Royal Mail zollt The Man Who Fell to Earth, David Bowie, noch einmal auf ganz besondere Weise Tribut. So wurde ihm dort nicht nur ein Briefmarkensatz gewidmet. Einige hundert dieser Marken wurden jetzt, befestigt an einem Heliumballon, Richtung Stratosphäre geschickt, wo der Balloon in einer Höhe von 33-34 Kilometer platz und all diese Marken auf die Erde fallen lässt. Welch schöne Idee.
52 sets in total (the same number of years of Bowie’s professional recording career) were attached to helium balloons with cameras, just like Bowie’s character in that movie.
When the balloons burst, after reaching 34,100m at a speed of about 12mph, the stamps began descending at nearly 200mph.
It’s a fitting tribute to the star who sang about the depths of outer space in many of his songs and featured in the 1976 film The Man Who Fell to Earth.
Leider gibt es bisher keine Aufnahmen der fallenden Briefmarken, aber da kommt sich noch was. Den Fall des Trägers gibt es als Video und die Royal Mail verlost auf dieser Projektseite Sets der Marken, so denn wer erraten kann, wo die Teile gelandet sein könnten.

2 KommentareAstronomen haben 40 Lichtjahre entfernt den Zwergstern Trappist-1 entdeckt. Um diesen kreisens sieben Planeten, die der Erde ähnlich sind und auf denen es Wasser geben könnte. Vielleicht ziehe ich demnächst um.

Gestern hat SpaceX mal wieder eine Trägerrakete vom Typ Falcon 9 auf der Erde landen lassen, was bei diesem Versuch wieder gut geklappt hat. Das läuft ja nicht immer so. Ich finde es immer noch beeindruckend, wie diese Geschosse quasi einfach so auf der Erde einparken.
