Doku: Jah Rastafari! – Die Wurzeln des Reggae

„Reggae soll nicht unterhalten, Reggae hat eine Mission.“

Tolle Arte-Doku über den Sound, der immer geht: Reggae. Und über die Philosophie dahinter. Aber Reggae ist natürlich viel mehr als Musik.

„Die Doku geht auf Spurensuche und entschlüsselt die Codes des Reggae, die bis auf die schwarzen Befreiungsbewegungen des letzten Jahrhunderts zurückgehen. Dafür trifft der Filmemacher Tim Gorbauch in Kingston, Jamaika, und auf dem Rototom Sunsplash Festival in Spanien junge und alte Roots-Reggae-Musiker, Kulturwissenschaftler, Historiker und Rastafari-Aktivisten.

Auf die Frage, was man mit Reggae verbinde, erhält man fast immer die gleichen kurzen Antworten: Bob Marley, Kiffen, Dreadlocks, Jamaika und ein irgendwie entspanntes Leben. Tatsächlich gehört all das ganz wesentlich zum Reggae dazu. Die Frage ist allerdings: warum? Was hat das Rauchen von Marihuana mit Reggae zu tun? Welche Bedeutung haben Dreadlocks abseits von Style und Fashion? Wieso entstand das alles auf der Karibikinsel Jamaika? „Jah Rastafari! Die Wurzeln des Reggae“ geht auf Spurensuche und entschlüsselt die Codes des Reggae, die bis auf die schwarzen Befreiungsbewegungen des letzten Jahrhunderts zurückgehen.

Dafür trifft der Filmemacher Tim Gorbauch in Kingston, Jamaika, und auf dem Rototom Sunsplash Festival in Spanien junge und alte Roots-Reggae-Musiker, Kulturwissenschaftler, Historiker und Rastafari-Aktivisten. Musiker wie den Gitarristen Earl „Chinna“ Smith, der an Hunderten Reggae-Alben beteiligt war und gemeinsam mit Bob Marley und den Wailers spielte. Stranger Cole, eine Legende der Rocksteady- und Ska-Ära, den unbezähmbaren DJ, Toaster und Sänger Big Youth.

Aber auch junge Musiker wie Addis Pablo, den Sohn des legendären Augustus Pablo, Kabaka Pyramid, Chronixx und Jah9. Sie alle gehören zur jungen, aber sehr wirkungsvollen Bewegung des Reggae-Revivals, das seit ein paar Jahren den Roots-Reggae zurück ins Rampenlicht bringt.“

Roots & Dub: FACT mix 494 – Colleen

Ein fantastischer Roots Reggae & Dub Mix, den Cécile ‚Colleen‘ Schott hier für FACT gemixt hat. Läuft hier schon seit zwei Tagen im Repeat-Mode.

The French composer has been releasing records for over 10 years, including the classic The Golden Morning Breaks and Les Ondes Silencieuses. Her recent work, however, has arguably been her best. 2013’s The Weighing of the Heart, the first Colleen record to put her vocals centre-stage, was described by FACT’s John Twells as „40 minutes of economic, uncluttered and most importantly unique music“, while this year’s Captain of None is perhaps her most ambitious record to date: an ode to dub-reggae that’s more bass and vocal-driven than her previous work.

Colleen’s FACT mix is a companion piece of sorts to Captain of None, and focuses on music that „has specifically influenced“ the album, „mostly from the point of view of song-writing, interpretation, production, or just a general “feel” in the music, for lack of a better word.“

„No other song“, Colleen tells us, „encapsulates how these various aspects of music-making are intertwined in Jamaican music better than Burning Spear’s ‚Door Peeper‘. Released in 1969, the combination of Burning Spear’s voice, percussion, compressed horn line, minimal instrumentation and lyrics, and dry but deep production make this song one of the most earth-shaking I’ve ever heard. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Scientist’s ‚Dangerous Match 1‘ from 1982 sounds like underwater swimming in weird waters and shows how abstract and stylized Jamaican music can be.“ Elsewhere on the mix, examples of „crazy tape manipulation“, „radical production“ and „killer basslines“ remind us just how much even the more outsider side of today’s music owes to dub.

Colleen’s FACT mix closes with Lee Perry’s ‚Return of the Super Ape, a track that she „heard in my childhood. [It was] one of the many Lee Perry/Upsetters songs contained on a tape that my parents bought in the late 70s and which we played in the car on long trips. To this day I just love this track and still find it totally unique and one of a kind: you can never be sure of what it is that you’re hearing on this song: monkeys, spanners falling on the floor in a metal house, a jazz band lost in Jamaica, soap bubbles transformed into notes… before one of the best breaks and song finales of all time.“

Geburtstagsmixe: 70 Jahre Bob Marley

Robert Nesta „Bob“ Marley wäre heute 70 Jahre alt geworden. Für mich persönlich einer der größten Musiker aller Zeiten. Grund genug, die Mixe rauszusuchen, die Leute in der ganzen Welt anlässlich seines Jahrestags gemacht haben, um ihm Tribut zu zollen. Und das sind einige. Ich glaube hier läuft das ganze Wochenende nur Marley. Wäre nicht das erste Mal.

Ich habe lange nicht Marley gehört und hatte noch länger schon keinen Marley-Mix mehr im Blog. Aber wenn DJ Vadim sich bequemt, einen neuen Megamix mit den Liedern des Meisters aufzunehmen, kann ich gleich beides auf einmal machen, auch wenn „Megamix“ an sich ja immer irgendwie ein bisschen nach Dorfbums klingt.

I couldnt resist. He is a legend. Arguably one of the most important singer songwriters of the 20th century. Some would say it is elvis or the beatles or bob dylan etc. the list is long but i would argue that few have had the global impact Marley had. if u go to townships in africa, who will they know? if u go tot the slums in peru or philipines or mongolia. its bob all the way. and thats the thing. He wrote some of the most beautiful love songs and protest songs at the same time. he touched the rich and the poor, the down trodden and even the political elite of his time.
on a recent tour in the US, i was genuinly shocked how few americans knew bob marley. ppl will say, bollocks vad. but tis true. time and time again, ppl in america just didnt know reggae. im not talking about the jamicans who live on flat bush av in BK. im talking main street USA. if ppl had heard of him, they wouldn b able to mention a song. So i was like, wow. im gonna do a little mix of alternative marley songs. not just Legend but others songs that people may not have heard. my favourite is WAR. the lyrics taken from emperor haille salasie speech to the United Nations…. wat a speech. How many politicians would be able to elequently express them selves like that nowadays…
enjoy. The spirit of bob marley continues.

Video: Seeed – Waiting

Seitdem ich Seeed vor Jahren mal in der Arena sah, waren wir beide eigentlich fertig miteinander. Das Konzert war alles andere als gut und musikalisch holte mich seitdem von ihnen auch nichts mehr auf den Dancefloor, aber das hier, dieses „Waiting“ würde mich genau dort hinziehen können. In einer lauen Sommernacht. Am Feuer. Mit einem Drink in der einen, und einem Sticky in der anderen. Gespielt auf dem Soundsystem des liebsten Dreadheads der Stadt.

Das Video fasst schöne Impressionen der Südamerika-Tour von Seeed zusammen, der Original-Riddim hat mehr als 50 Jahre auf dem Buckel. Liebe.

Und beim Offbeat-Piano immer schön die Knie absacken lassen – so wird man Teil der tanzenden Harmonie.

Roots Rockers Sound – Studio One Session (2002)

Ich habe keine Ahnung, was an dem hiermit vertriebenen Mythos dran ist, dass dieses Tape, welches im Jahre 2002 vom Roots Rockers Soundsytem eingespielt wurde, auch verschwunden sein sollte, aber ich mag so was ja.

Von Vinyl auf MiniDisc aufgenommen, zwei mal 45 Minuten. Gemastert, auf Kassetten überspielt und unter den Leuten verteilt. Lange verschollen, jetzt wieder aufgetaucht und digitalisiert: der legendäre Roots Rockers Sound „Studio One Session“ Mix von 2002!

Nun jedenfalls ist es im Netz gelandet. Drölf Klassiker, die anno duz im Studio One aufgenommen wurden und in Teilen auch noch Jahre später gut genug waren, um die Popkultur im Gesamten aufzumischen. Dabei mag ich die alle schon sehr gerne im Original. Ja. Hab ich heute mindestens 8 mal durchlaufen lassen.

Was ich eigentlich sagen wollte: Studio One Mix. Ja, man! Kaboom.
