Technics verkauft 300 limitierte 1200er in 30 Minuten

The company began accepting orders or its SL-1200GAE model at 10:00 a.m. Within 30 minutes, buyers had snapped up the entire domestic run of 300 units, priced at lofty 356,400 yen (or about $3,300) each.

“I didn’t think the price was too high as we have confidence in our brand, but I didn’t expect them to sell out so quickly,” a representative of Panasonic told the Sankei.

An additional 900 turntables will eventually be available for international sales.

Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Technics brand. Since launching the SL-1200 in 1972, the company has shipped approximately 3.5 million units. With direct-drive motors for superior sound quality, the SL1200 became synonymous for reliability in the DJ community.

Decades later, however, sales started to slump along with the decrease in demand for vinyl records. In 2010, Panasonic discontinued the line due to “a decline in demand for analog products,” a Panasonic representative told The Tokyo Reporter.

Technics‘ neuer Plattenspieler: SL-1200G

turntable3

„Two versions of the player will be released: a limited Technics 50th Anniversary ‚Grand Class SL-1200GAE‘ will come first, in summer 2016 (limited, naturally, to 1200 units). A non-limited Grand Class 1200G will follow before the end of 2016. Both will be expensive, audiophile-grade devices, even though they are still largely aimed at DJs. Prices were not announced but are expected to reach several thousand pounds.“

Fehlt ja noch was.

Panasonic presented a prototype of the new direct-drive turnable at the show, which is made from stark aluminium, and drawn with classic lines and a utilitarian aesthetic reminiscent of the other high-end (and extremely expensive) audio products in the Technics line.

The analog turntable will be completely rebuilt, Panasonic said, with new elements at every level. But it will also be designed to reflect the esteem in which the classic Technics turntables — the legendary SP10 and DJs‘ favourite SL-1200 turntables — are still held.

Gestickte Zoetrope auf Plattenspielern

Elliot-Schultz_Dripping-Wide

„Inspired by the work of Alexandre Alexeieff and Claire Parker, I aimed to guide my production process indirectly through the limitations afforded by alternative media. Their invention, the pin screen, was used as the sole medium in the production of six short films, and shaped the outcome of their work. In response, I have designed and embroidered animated sequences onto discs, similar to the Phenakistokope, Zoopraxiscope and Stamfer Disc layouts. This repurposing of media introduced strict parameters, namely spatial, tonal and temporal, and has greatly informed all stages of my process.“
