Ich lass das mal hier und gehe später vielleicht auch einfach mal raus. Einen Schneemann bauen. Oder so.

In 2022 nearly half of Americans expected a civil war in the next few years, one in five now believes political violence is justified. And it is not just the US but around the world. People increasingly see themselves as part of opposing teams.

There are many different reasons for this, but one gets blamed a lot: social media. Social media divides us, makes us more extreme and less empathetic, it riles us up or sucks us into doom scrolling, making us stressed and depressed. It feels like we need to touch grass and escape to the real world.

New research shows that we might have largely misinterpreted why this is the case. It turns out that the social media internet may uniquely undermine the way our brains work but not in the way you think.

Mann nach Raubüberfall anhand seiner Unterwäsche identifiziert

Ein maskierter Räuber, der im vergangenen September in New York mit vorgehaltener Waffe einen Tabakladen überfiel, wäre beinahe ungeschoren davongekommen. Aber dann verriet ihn seine extravagante, bunte Unterwäsche, die aus seiner Buchse ragte. Es nützt die beste Maskierung fürs Gesicht nicht, wenn man deine bunten Schlüppa aus 100 Metern Entfernung erkennen kann.

Der 30-jährige Tatverdächtige wurde am Mittwoch festgenommen. Unterdessen müssen seine beiden Komplizen, denen es gelang, sowohl ihr Gesicht als auch ihre Unterhose zu verstecken, noch gefunden werden.

An anonymous tipster passed along the Instagram handle of the suspect with the colorful underwear, the complaint said. The caller also told police that the robbers had tried to sell their stolen merchandise at another Queens location.

Detectives reviewed video footage from the sale location and spotted the man with the colorful underwear, now easily identifiable because he was no longer wearing a mask, the complaint said.

Police identified the suspect based on his Instagram account, the video from the merchandise sale spot and photos from prior arrests, according to the complaint.

Pyro im Kino

Ich habe, anders als die deutschen Fußballverbände, keine Probleme mit Pyro-Technik in Stadien. Im Gegenteil. Dass die aber so wie hier in Indien in einem Kino gezündet wird, weil ein Bollywood-Star auf der Leinwand auftaucht, wäre dann aber auch mir deutlich einer zu viel. Holy moly.

Movie-goers in India were left terrified on Sunday after a group of fans set off fireworks inside a cinema after Bollywood star Salman Khan appeared on screen.

Footage shared to social media shows dozens of people erupting in panic as fireworks were lit inside the theatre in Malegaon, Maharashtra.

Video appears to show fans waiting for the appearance of movie-star Khan on the screen before pyrotechnics are launched into the air.

Winter in einer der die Umwelt am meisten belastenden Regionen der Welt

Dystopische Aufnahmen aus Norilsk, Russland, das nicht nur eine unrühmliche Gesichte hat, sondern auch die Stadt ist, von der in Russland die höchste Umweltbelastung aller Städte ausgeht.

Norilsk (russisch Нори́льск) ist eine an den Nordwestausläufern des Mittelsibirischen Berglandes gelegene Großstadt im Norden der Region Krasnojarsk in Russland. Sie hat 175.365 Einwohner (Stand 14. Oktober 2010) und gilt als nördlichste Großstadt der Erde.

Aufgrund der Nickel-Produktion weisen die Stadt und ihre Umgebung eine hohe Umweltverschmutzung auf. Nach einigen Schätzungen stammt ein Prozent der globalen Schwefeldioxid-Emissionen von den Nickel-Hütten des Unternehmens Nornickel.

Im Oktober 2006 wurde die Stadt vom Blacksmith Institute zu einem der zehn „am schlimmsten belasteten Orte der Welt“ erklärt. Auch 2007 und 2013 erhielt der Ort diese „Auszeichnung“. Nochmals bestätigt wurde diese Angabe durch einen Bericht des russischen Statistikamtes Rosstat im Juni 2011, laut welchem Norilsk der am meisten verschmutzte Ort Russlands ist.

Am 5. September 2016 färbte sich der Fluss Daldykan abschnittsweise rot. Norilsk Nickel erklärte später, dass ein defekter Filtrationsdamm die Ursache gewesen sei, bestritt aber, dass es zu größeren Umweltschäden gekommen sei. Russische Umweltaktivisten von Greenpeace kritisierten, dass die Angaben von Norilsk Nickel praktisch nicht zu überprüfen seien, da das Unternehmen den Zugang zur ganzen Taimyrhalbinsel kontrolliere und damit unabhängige Untersuchungen verhindere.

Seit November 2001 ist Ausländern (ausgenommen sind Staatsbürger von Belarus) eine Einreise in die Stadt nur noch gestattet, wenn Genehmigungen der Stadtverwaltung und des Nickelwerks vorliegen. Fluggesellschaften und Reedereien sind angewiesen, Ausländern ohne derartige Genehmigungen keine Flugtickets und Fahrscheine zu verkaufen. Den Status als geschlossene Stadt erhielt Norilsk durch die russische Regierung auf Antrag der lokalen Behörden und des größten Arbeitgebers MMC Norilsk Nickel. Laut der Pressesprecherin des Unternehmens sollten dadurch angeblich Migrationsprobleme unterbunden werden.

Wasser aus dem Hahn zu trinken ist für die meisten von uns wahrscheinlich absolute Normalität. Damit allerdings gehören wir zu ziemlich wenigen privilegierten Nationen auf diesem Planeten, wie diese Karte zeigt. Woanders nämlich ist das alles andere als selbstverständlich und nicht mal möglich.

Unvorhersehbar und dennoch interessant womit sich manche so auseinandersetzen. In dem Fall, wie im Guardian seziert, geht es um Schrifttrends der Gentrifizierung. Konkreter um den Font Neutraface und die Design-Marketing-Ästhetik der Gentrifizierung. Wäre ich nie drauf gekommen, aber irgendwie hängt ja doch alles zusammen.

Neutraface – a typeface known for its clean lines and its legibility from a distance – has been dubbed the unofficial font of gentrification, according to eagle-eyed Twitter and Instagram users who have spotted the typeface (and others like it) on buildings around the country.

For many of these professionals and tastemakers, the minimalism of Neutraface – with its thin, pointy, attention-grabbing lines – adds whimsy and elegance to a building. At the same time, as Neutraface house numbers have become too commonplace to ignore, some now associate them (along with gray paint jobs) with neighborhoods overtaken by construction and renovations.

That association also lends itself to other dystopian connections: cheap fixer-upper jobs done on the fly, rent hikes and people being displaced from their longtime homes. Whatever the meanings people make of these house numbers, Neutraface now seems both indivisible from – and an indicator of – the constant changes of our nation’s screwed-up housing market.
