Forbidden Colours – A Tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto

Dave von Low Light Mixes mit einem Tribute-Mix, der das musikalische Schaffen von Ryuichi Sakamoto sammelt und ehren soll. Passt.

Another musical great has left this world. Ryuichi Sakamoto was a founding member of Yellow Magic Orchestra. He became well known for his neo-classical work, his collaborations, and of course his film scores, from Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence to The Revenant to the Oscar-winning score for The Last Emperor. The solo piano version of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is one of my favorite piano pieces ever written.

In January of this year he released an album of piano tracks, called 12, that is hauntingly simple and beautiful.

In 2017 he recorded a track called „Life, Life“, from the album Async, that is one of my favorite pieces of all time. I’d like to finish this post with the spoken word poem that appears in that track…

Ryuichi Sakamoto – Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence

Aus gegebenem Anlass. Ryuichi Sakamoto ist neben Bruce Springsteen einer der ganz wenigen Musiker, die ich vor ihrem Ableben unbedingt noch einmal live erleben wollte. Bei ihm wird das nicht mehr passen. Mach’s gut Ryuichi, und danke für die Musik, die mich seit gut 30 Jahren begleitet – und das weiterhin tun wird.

Der japanische Filmkomponist, Musiker, Schauspieler und Produzent Ryuichi Sakamoto (»Der letzte Kaiser«, »The Revenant – Der Rückkehrer«) ist tot. Er starb bereits am vergangenen Dienstag, wie sein Büro nun mitteilte.

Das LoFi Girl hat gestern endlich mal eine Pause eingelegt

Der Channel vom LoFi Girl hat bei mir einen festen Platz ganz oben in den Lesezeichen und ist eigentlich generell auch als Tab offen. Weil der Sound einfach immer passt, wenn nichts anderes geht. Nun hat die Gute über Jahre hinweg ohne jegliche Pause dafür gesorgt, dass wir Music „to relax/study to“ hatten und nebenbei halt wirklich auch selber immer gebüffelt und gebüffelt. Gestern zum 1.April hat sie sich dann endlich mal eine Lern-Pause gegönnt und mit dem Kopf auf ihrem Schreibtisch geschlafen, während der Sound natürlich für uns alle weiterlief. Aber: ein Tag der Pause war dann aber wohl erstmal ausreichend. Mittlerweile büffelt sie wieder. Hach!

Album Stream: Paul St. Hilaire – Tikiman Vol​.​1

Die für mich prägnanteste Stimme im Bereich der elektronischen Tanzmusik in den letzten 30 Jahren gehört Paul St. Hilaire aka Tikiman. Dutzenden hochkarätigen Produktionen hat er seine Stimme gepaart mit seinem einzigartigen Flow geliehen und sie dadurch akustisch glänzen lassen. Sein letztes Solo-Album ist über 15 Jahre alt. Nun hat er beim Berliner Label Kynant Records ein neues veröffentlicht, das es auch digital gibt, was mich überrascht, denn ich hatte mal gehört, dass er das gar nicht mal so gut findet. Um so besser, denn als Vinyl ist „Tikiman Vol​.​1“ natürlich schon ausverkauft und wir können mit dem Album zumindest schon mal den Sonntag genießen, wobei es bei mir ganz sicher nicht bleiben wird.

Over his 30-plus year career, St. Hilaire has become one of dance music’s quietly legendary figures. Born and raised in the Caribbean island Dominica, he moved to Berlin in 1994 and has lent both his voice and his musicianship to some of the most iconic electronic music from the German capital – and beyond. Renowned for his collaborations with Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus (AKA Rhythm & Sound), he has also appeared on records with Deadbeat, Rhauder, Larry Heard aka Mr. Fingers and Stereotyp (G-Stone Recordings), amongst others.

However, few know the extent of St. Hilaire’s compositional and technical mastery. From his home studio in Kreuzberg, which includes an extensive collection of vintage hardware, self-built instruments and notebooks scribbled with endless lyrics, he has created a vast archive of material spanning ambient dub, avant-jazz, lush techno and lovers rock.

Album Stream: Martin Kohlstedt – Feld

Der großartige Martin Kohlstedt hat heute mit „Feld“ sein nun schon sechstes Studio-Album veröffentlicht und von dem lass ich mich jetzt ganz entschleunigt ins Wochenende tragen. Der Mann ist ab April auf Tour und ich versuche mal, noch einen Platz im SFB Sendesaal zu ergattern, denn ich kann Martin live wärmstens empfehlen.

The dawn of a new era – The new sounds I would like to share with you are not the beginning of a new chapter, they are the beginning of a completely new story: «Feld» as a whole is a living body, a movie with an immersive, captivating story and yet every piece is abundant with character and stands out as a complete, individual scene in itself embedded in a greater picture.

Low Light Mix zum Piano Day 2023

Dave von Low Light Mixes hat anlässlich des heutigen Piano Days einen Mix gewebt, der – Überraschung – einzig und allein aus ambienten Piano Tunes besteht. Ich lass den mal hier, während er durchläuft.

International Piano Day is March 29th and, as has been the case for the last five years, I’ve put together a new mix in celebration of ambient piano tunes. I don’t do quite as many piano mixes as I once did but when I create these Piano Day sets I find I really enjoy the vibe.

There are a lot of new tracks in the mix, half of them from 2022 & 2023. But there are a few older tunes as well. I really like how this one turned out. I hope you enjoy the latest Piano Day excursion.
