Album-Stream: Nils Frahm – Old Friends New Friends

Unser aller Lieblingsklavierspieler Nils Frahm hat heute mit „Old Friends New Friends“ ein neues Album am Start, auf dem wir alle mal ganz Piano ins Wochenende gehen können. Ich gehe schon mal vor.

Nils Frahm’s double album ‘Old Friends New Friends’ gathers together 23 solo piano tracks recorded between 2009 and 2021, almost all hitherto unreleased but, for one reason or another, omitted from previous projects. The album offers “an anatomy of all my ways of thinking musically and playing,” Frahm says, adding with a smile, “Maybe I could say it’s an album I worked on for twelve years, and finally I have enough material?”

Old Friends New Friends was pieced together during the pandemic as Frahm used the time to arrange his archives, conscious of the sheer number of recordings he’d accumulated. Having selected his favourites, he realised how, when he listened to them together, they offered “a different spectrum of freedom for me.

Album-Stream: Blank Gloss – Melt

Ich höre immer noch diesen großartigen Blank Gloss Mix von neulich und bin in diesem Zuge über das Debut-Album der beiden gestolpert, das im Sommer auf Kompakt veröffentlicht wurde. Einige der Tracks davon haben es auch in den Mix geschafft. Schönes Ding. Gerade für die kalten Tage.

Melt is the debut full-length album by Blank Gloss, the Sacramento duo of Patrick Hills and Morgan Fox. Attentive listeners will recall their lovely contribution to Kompakt’s Pop Ambient 2021, “Of A Vessel”, which reappears here; others might know their 2020 mini-album, January, released on the stylish Miami label Night Young. With Melt, Blank Gloss make a heavy contribution to Kompakt’s ongoing explorations of the hundreds of hues of Pop Ambience. A lush dream of an album, it’s a remarkable index of the gilded eternities that you can magic from a reduced tonal palette: glistening guitars, ruminative piano, warps and weaves of subtle drone and hum.

Album-Stream: „Weaponised Serenity“ – 36 packt den Jungle-Vibe der 90er in ein Ambient-Album

Dennis Huddleston aka 36 hat auf seinem neuem Album „Weaponised Serenity“ seine musikalische Sozialisation durch den Hardcore/Jungle-Sounds der frühen 90er in Ambient-Klänge verpackt. Geiles Konzept, das in der Summe nicht wenig an The KLFs „Chill out“ erinnert. „Weaponised Serenity“ gibt es limitiert auf 100 Kassetten oder zum Download bei Bandcamp. Ich höre es gleich noch mal.

Stream & Download: Chillhop Essentials Summer 2021

Der Frühling schleicht sich davon, wobei der so richtig ja keiner war. Eher so Herbst. Dafür naht der Sommer und mit ihm eine neue Chillhop Essentials. LoFi, Dope- und Downbeats in gewohnt großartiger Qualität und wieder mit sehr hübschem Cover. Auf das der Sommer so wird, wie die Kiste hier klingt.

Album-Stream: London Grammar – Californian Soil

Die großartigen London Grammar haben heute ihr nun drittes Studioalbum veröffentlicht. Mich haben die dazugehörigen Auskoppelungen unerwarteter Weise nicht so richtig abholen können, weshalb meine Freude auf „Californian Soil“ doch eher gedämpfter Natur war. Nach dem dritten Durchlauf haben sie mich dann aber wieder richtig. Lieb die einfach.

Album-Stream: Nils Frahm – Graz

Nils Frahm hat heute zum Piano Day doch überraschend ein neues Album bei Erased Tapes veröffentlicht, das genau genommen so neu nicht ist. „Graz“ heißt es und ist sein eigentliches Debüt-Album, welches er im Jahr 2009 im Rahmen seiner Abschlussarbeit „Conversations For Piano And Room“ aufgenommen hatte. Seitdem hat er es unter Verschluss gehalten und nun heute veröffentlicht. Und Nils Frahm geht ja nun wirklich immer.

Graz is a moment of time at the very beginning of Nils’ quiet revolution. The essential genius is already evident; the harmonic language of classical, and the immediacy of jazz. Nils seems to pull down each idea moment by moment, gently, to not scare away the muse. He describes: “sometimes when you hear a piano, you might think it’s a conversation between a woman and a man. At the same time, it can hint at shapes of the universe and describe how a black hole looks. You can make sounds that have no relation to anything we can measure.”
